Hey folks, it's time for Episode 3 of Making a Low Poly Racing game! I hope you enjoy it! If you haven't checked out episode one and two, or my Model 10 Cars in 10 Minutes video - I suggest that you check those out first =)
In this third episode, I add wheels to the car and I create and attach wheel colliders. The first script is created that will add motortorque to the rear wheels and allow the front wheels to steer the car left and right. We also adjust the center of gravity so it doesn't tumble over.
Check out the video where I model the 10 Cars in 10 Minutes:
• Let's Make 10 CARS in ...
Check out Low Poly Racing - Making Of - Episode 1:
• Low Poly Racing - Maki...
Check out Low Poly Racing - Making Of - Episode 2:
• Low Poly Racing - Maki...
Tools used in this series:
* Blender 2.82
* Unity 2019.x
I hope you enjoy the video! Take care, stay safe, and have fun!
I film my videos with a Panasonic GH5 and I also use an Insta360 One X camera for some of the intro shots.

I was Invisioning making a top-down racing game with a lot of features i loved from different games... but I didn't know where to start. Since I discovered your channel I have been inspired enough to get moving and start making things (for now I'm in the cars modelling department, but soon it should be time to start with unity). Thanks for everything that you do here. It really helps me a lot

A tip for importing models in unity: instead of exporting the model, you can just save the blend file in the assets folder. Unity will automatically import it. That way if you make changes to the model, instead of having to re-export it, just save the file and then it will automatically save the changes into unity. Just make sure to delete the lights and camera in blender!
@Imphenzia
@Imphenzia 4 жыл бұрын
You can re-export fbx as well and overwrite which is good. I prefer fbx as they are a lot smaller in size and you can ustomize what you want to export. But thanks for the tip!

I would go for fbx. For some reason unity is not able to import (or detect) all animation from a blend-file. So it ends up with one. With fbx it is working perfectly. Another downside of blend-files is, that you can't share them via asset store. Maybe because you need to have blender installed (which is not the case for everyone).

This is THE BEST follow along tutorial for unity in the entirety of KZfaq. Thank you so much for showing us how you did it, the production is also very ejoyable! It makes me happy to see your little comments down in your custom annotations. I love this series and your game seems fun to play. unlike the pacman or flappy/angry bird tutorials out there. Also you're getting me into low poly modeling, cause it seems achievable for me. But I can't ignore anatomy, it's so hard for me to make misshaped models... and also too hard to make them realistic... woe is me LOL

When I've made cars in the past I flip the wheel by just setting the scale to -1 on the X axis rather than rotation it 180 degrees. Then you don't have to worry about doing the 180 flip while rotating the wheels in the Update method.

Wow, very nice explanation and manifestation! Congrat man! A tiny note/question if you don't mind: isn't it better if you get the inputs in the Update() and save it in a member, and used those saved input states within the FixedUpdate()? This way you get the input where it should be done, and you apply them where it should be done too, also you free up some cpu cycles by avoiding those ugly string identifiers within a method that is called soooooooooooo many times. ;) It's a suggestion I'm not sure in, so you can let me know if I'm wrong. ;) Keep up this good work man!
@Imphenzia
@Imphenzia 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks! And thanks for sharing some thoughts. Performance optimizations could always be done but for a game like this it wouldn't really make any difference. I try to write easy to understand code (for new people) and if they want to develop their skills in the future that's great. I apply the input states in the FixedUpdate since they are applied to physics driven wheel colliders, and since it's axis input I don't have to worry about missing any inputs in the Update loop like you risk with GetKeyDown etc. The FixedUpdate() loop runs 100 times per second by default, and with vSync the Update runs at 60-140 depending on peoples refresh rates, or potentially 200-1000 if people run without vsync for some reason =) So it's roughly the same or less to do it in FixedUpdate in this case. As far as I know you still have to reference Input.GetAxis with a string, I don't think it accepts hashes, and again, I think we are talking about an undetectable performance boost to change. But, those are my thoughts, and I am no pro coder =) Thanks again!

Dude, fell in love with your channel. Always wanted to make a racing game. I got to modelling, crafting the track, jousting with the exports tools not being as refined at that time (having to rotate mesh 90 degrees for some reason, having to arbitrary scale them, then you find out the mesh collider was rotated 90 degrees, stuff like that) Well and the farthest i got was having full control over the car then BOOM... the thing rolling over. I can't tell you how many hours i spent trying to develop anti-roll bars or a hackish solution like adding down force during turns... Ultimately i understood moving the center of mass was the way to go, but then i wanted to make jumps and had to Mariokart a solution... Automagically speeding up before a jump, but sadly that conspired against my game original design, lost interest over time and abandoned the project... Now i can't tell you how pumped i'm for the next episodes of your series Thanks a lot for doing these!

This is awesome! I don't know if this works outside of Sublime Text, but you can hold ctrl and click to choose multiple lines at once without selecting the in-between bit.

could be using a method there... like Vector3 position; Quaternion rotation; private void Update() { GetWorldPose(wheelColliderFrontLeft, wheelFrontLeft); GetWorldPose(wheelColliderFrontRight, wheelFrontRight); GetWorldPose(wheelColliderBackLeft, wheelBackLeft); GetWorldPose(wheelColliderBackRight, wheelBackRight); } void GetWorldPose(WheelCollider wheelCollider, Transform wheelTransform) { wheelCollider.GetWorldPose(out position, out rotation); wheelTransform.position = position; wheelTransform.rotation = rotation; } awesome series, loving it. Keep up the good work man

Hello Imphenzia, very nice tutorial so far. I followed also the tutorial on how to make cars and added one more car (formula 1) just for the purpose of creating a simple race game with formula 1 cars. And while waiting for the next parts I am creating some circuits :) I have a couple of questions tho. Are you planning to make also a tutorial on AI behavior? And what about car damages and implementation of fuel and tyre wear? You should honestly think about posting all the tutorial series to udemy. I'd be more than happy to pay for a whole course from you, because you explain things very well

Great video as always! Do you plan to share all your files at the end? Also, could you also explain is the next one how to have a third person camera view option if it's not too complicated? That would be really nice. :)
@Imphenzia

Thanks! I should be able to share it but I have to change it a bit as I edit the video because some parts I simplify during the video making process as I did things a bit wrong firamst time around. I can add a camera view toggle, but I haven't done the interior of cars at the moment for an incar view.

@@Imphenzia Thanks for your reply. Awesome! From my point of view, I've never tried Unity, so I'm far from a purist. I just want to try to put some of my car models in that to test and analyze how things works (without doing everything from scratch). As for the camera view toggle, I was talking about third person view (behind the car) not first person view, as I'm aware that's a lot more work to do the incar view.

Nice video. I have a couple of questions 1) What happens if you put thw wheel coliders on the wheel transform 2) Why not use the mesh colider for the car model
@Imphenzia
@Imphenzia 4 жыл бұрын
Cool thanks! If I remember correctly the wheel colliders don't like to be rotated and scaled. When I did my Parking Spaces game I had mesh colliders first and when you instantiate a bunch of them they really affect the performance compared to primitives. I plan to have a lot of cars in the game so the performance will be a lot better. Also, you cant collide two non-convex mesh colliders in Unity.
