Quick note: As I found out afterwards, unfortunately as of right now the Big Shuriken 3 isn't available. There is something in the works though so hope to test and show you guys soon. Will also be testing ThermalRight's AXP-120 with the same setup as well.

@@glennhsu5783 Running the AXP90-X47 on a 7800X3D in a Terra right now, one of the heat pipe tips on the cooler is barely too long to fit on the ITX Gigabyte board but with some violence you can make it work since it's just copper. Left Prime95 running for 2 days after I set it up, no cooling problems at all. Kind of blew my mind how cool and quiet this CPU can run.

I have the BS3 in my Terra cooling a 12600k and works really well, I did swap the fan for a slim Noctua. I have seen several people who had the room replace the fan on the IS-55 with a 25mm fan and it worked really well also.

Nice review. Noctua really should replace the older stock 1600 RPM B9x25 fan with the newer 2000 RPM A9x25 fan for improved cooling performance.

The ram did fit because the cooler dimensions account for the sticking out part, while ram manufacturers show dimensions of the whole ram, connector included. Also it would help if you kept the same color of each cooler all the time, so people can identify it by color rather than looking at names. :) Otherwise great video, have a Terra myself and bought Big Shuriken 3. After seeing this video I think the L12 with 120mm fan might have been a better idea, but at the end.. I don't think this one is bad either so I'm fine.

That's a stupid way to define ram clearance on their part though if that's really the case. You should obviously state which dimm dimensions will be compatible instead of the total height from the top of the dimm slot to the top of the DIMM. Actually you know what, I dont think I got this right, can you clarify exactly what length the listed spec is referring to? Surely it's not the distance between the top of the dimm slot and the top of the dimm

If you end up going for the Noctua NH-L12S on the Asus ROG Strix B650E-I it will fit with the heat pipes oriented towards the I/O if you remove the cover on the I/O section that provides only looks. Keeps this processor nicely cool.

@MachinesMore this was the exact message I got from Scythe PH regarding my inquiry of the Shuriken 3 "Sorry, the model has been declared end of life, manufacturer is coming up with a new model by 2nd quarter in 2024." So I guess we'll be seeing a new shuriken.

@@sobangcha3042 even though it is a pretty popular heatsink the decision to discontinue the Shuriken 3 is the correct decision. On some B760-I boards such as the Asus the Shuriken has trouble clearing the IO shroud. I am guessing the main reason for this is the fact that the heat spreader on the LGA1700 socket is roughly 0.8mm lower than LGA115x/1200. ID-Cooling IS-67-XT appears to be the only low-profile cooler with no clearance issues on top of the IO shroud. Scythe should redesign the Shuriken for better compatibility with beefy modern boards.

@@MachinesMoreI have an AXP120-x67 with noctua 120x15 in my terra with an 5900x. Good performance but too much turbolance with a 3080 tuf. Not enough space from the sides. Unfortunaly I can't use lower cpu cooler because I have an aorus b550i from gigabyte with a taller io shield and two ram stick higher than 30mm. Maybe in the future with another gpu with 2.5 slot i can move my setup away from the cpu side. Sorry for my bad english.

The best way I have found to run this cpu in a sff setup is to set the PPT to 75w. In that config I boost to 4.8-4.9ghz all core. While staying under 70c while gaming.

Excellent video, that adresses my main fear with this case that I've seen from some reviews, the nosie due to weird air interaction with the cutouts. Seems like there are some options to mitigate it!

I was using the L12 Ghost on my FormD T1, but I've upgraded to a 4080 Super, so my clearance now for my cooler is only 48mm. I managed to find an all copper cooler and replaced the fan with a 92mm Noctua. Performance wise, I don't really see much of a heat increase, but it is, of course, louder.

The Fractal Terra is a beautiful case. Unfortunately, temps all around were horrible. Tried the A4-H2O and it was great, but it would still throttle the CPU with an AIO. The Meshroom S worked beautifully. @5ghz consistent. No micro stutters in game after switching between these three cases. Then again, I do live in Southern California, so temperatures are pretty high here. Regardless, the Meshroom S is the one I recommend for anyone if they want to squeeze every last drop of value from their CPUs and the rest of their systems while still keeping the footprint of their system small.

As stated before however, I do live in an area where ambient temperatures are above 80 at times, so if anyone seems to be in a similar situation as I am, perhaps they may be better served with a case such as the Meshroom S. It seems that those who live in a chill environment that is air conditioned nicely don't seem to complain too much about temperatures, but that's just what I see personally.

My 7800x3d runs just fine in my h2o, even with 80-85f ambient temps with a 240mm aio, I'm surprised you had issues. Seems like it could have been a mounting issue or something. 4090/7800x3d in 11L running beautifully, no stutters, no throttling, no issues at all. Even stays under 89c during cinebench R23 loops (80-86c depending on ambient). Gaming it runs in the 55-70c range.

This channel has a lot of good videos on the fractal terra. I am planning a similar build but with a Gigabyte A620I AX or an ASRock A620I Lightning WiFi. I haven't found any such video on YT yet and how the VRM will perform with 7800X3D. Will the low profile fans even help in a build with the fractal terra. would be pairing it with the ASUS 4070 duo.

A top down cooler helps a lot with board cooling, much more important than the case fan would help. I haven’t tested the 7800X3D with that board but chip should be fine given the low power draw.

@@Qasper69 Haven't had any issues yet. The downside is that I couldn't have a 25mm fan when I upgraded to a 4080 FE - I had to downsize the fan to a 15mm Noctua Chromax but it works just fine imo. Idling, the CPU sits at around 32-35c. Gaming, it can go as high as 80c+ for intensive games but that is without an undervolt. After an undervolt, I can experience

I have the Coolermaster Elite 130 which technically supports coolers 67mm in height. However, right above that 67mm is the solid wall of the power supply, so I wouldn't think the fans would be moving much air at max cooler height. How much gap between the fan and the brick wall is needed? An IS-55 would only have about 10mm of space, whereas smaller and less performant cooler might actually perform better because there is more volume above it to pull air.

Hi! Nice video! I have a question: I have a 78003xd with a Noctua NH-L12S, and the temps during gaming hit around 65-75, with some games reaching 78C peaks. I am not sure this is normal behavior but I already tried swapping thermal paste or changing the cooler offset with no significant impact. I also set CO -30. Idle temps are aroud 50-60C. Do you think that my setup is correct? Are these temps normal?

Which RAM did you exactly use while testing the NH-L12 Ghost Edition with the 120mm fan (NF-A12x25)? As i have already bought RAM with a height of 35mm im curious if it will still fit under the fan. I have read on reddit that 34mm is the maximum RAM height with the 120mm fan installed to the NH-L12 Ghost...

A bit late comment here, but as a Noctua fan I wonder why you did not include NH-L12Sx77 in this test? I really like the Terra case, my only concern is the noice levels.

It’s a do-able configuration as long as you have the clearance, that 77mm config would require position 1 and a compatible 2-slot GPU, plus, it would place the cooler very very close to the side panel, which has a tendency to cause turbulent noise in the case.

Sure, that's theoretically possible. In my build with the MSI board the heatsink could only mount in a way where the bottom lip of the case precluded a thicker fan even though there was space between the side panel and the cooler. Also test for turbulence in the Terra though, proximity to the vents can cause odd noise.

It should clear most mobo rear IO heatsinks such that you can install without overhanging the RAM- but if somehow you cannot avoid that config then it’s 36mm.

I wouldn't recommend going out and getting one for this CPU, at one point they came with the R7s but that's no longer the case. Also, it doesn't fit in the case- it's a pretty tall cooler for only having a 92mm fan.
