Welcome to Tick Creek Ranch. This channel
was created to show the daily ins and outs of
life on a small ranch. We are a family of eight,
our lifestyle has taken us from the deserts of
Idaho to the wilds of Alaska and back to the
lower 48. We followed our dreams and finally
settled in the Ozark's of Missouri. We have
owned and operated our own businesses. over
the years, ranging from carpentry and
excavation to commercial and residential landscape. The children and ourselves have
developed a passion for learning new skills
which include leather work, welding and
fabricating, carpentry, plumbing, electrical,
roofing, painting, equipment operation, timber
sawing, blacksmithing, horseshoeing, flatwork
and concrete, timber framing, cattle ranching,
horse training, and many more. Please follow
along on this journey as we build our new
home and delve into the ways of regenerative
ranching. So stick around and watch us create
our dream using old world construction
techniques and style reminiscent of an era
gone by. Thank you and enjoy the journey.

We raised cattle when I was young. My grandpa must have been a smart man. We never had to doctor any animal that was 1 month old or older. Sometimes but not often, we had to treat them for this or that when we first bought them. But it didn't take long and they were growing fat & happy in proportion to their size/age. I know there were quite a few who would argue or fight to be able to buy grandpa's cattle each season when he had them up for sale. They said, " you can't get better beef than Bill's".

Kentucky 31 tall fescue is the primary grass species on all of the farms in central Missouri that Greg Judy owns or leases for his cattle sheep and now goats operation. I watched hundreds of his videos and, to the best of my recall, he has never had a fescue toxicity issue. If I remember correctly, the reason is that he never grazes too close to the ground as nearly all of the toxic endophytes are concentrated in the first 6" of the plant. I don't remember the exact time of the year *(winter?)(after the first hard frosts?)* but then the toxicity is reduced to negligible levels, and the cattle can eat as much as they desire.

Kentucky 31 is very prevalent throughout this part of the country and yes Greg has a bunch of it. K31 was introduced somewhere in the 40s and has been wreaking havoc with producers ever since. All graziers that run cattle on tall fescue have had fescue toxicity at some point or will. Greg has cattle that are missing their tails due to it and culls animals that don’t have resistance. Greg and I have discussed this matter at length. He was instrumental in helping us to identify the problem. FT is something everyone learns to manage for, we just messed up. The “summer slump” is a time referred to when the grasses slow in growth and animal performance is poor due to an increase in endophyte ergot alkaloids. Daily gain is also dramatically reduced. Fescue toxicity is usually associated with prolonged heat and increases with moisture/ humidity. The levels of toxins are even cyclical on the daily, with an increase with exposure to daylight and reduction in the dark. It causes a myriad of problems from elevated respiration, increased body temperature, salivation, sloughing of tails, ears and hooves, reduced circulation, calving, lactation etc. The goal for us is to learn to identify the symptoms at an early stage and make adjustments to our grazing management. Our issue started with several ingredients that culminated 1) heat and humidity 2) post summer rains 3) grazed new areas that the fescue was expressing itself more. 4) grazed too low At least we we know what to look for now. Seems the only school I learn from is the school of hard knocks:) Greg is a wealth of knowledge and we can all learn a lot from him. Great observations and thanks for the feedback Bruce

I used to manage a grass seed company here in MO. We purchased raw KY31 from farmers and cleaned, bagged and sold millions of pounds of it. KY31 is good for waterways... that’s it. I’d never seed that stuff into pastures or use it as hay. Livestock can starve on KY31 and/or develop several issues. We primarily sold it to the SE for yards believe it or not. Most cattlemen know not to seed that stuff, but they also know there’s a market for it in the SE United States. Orchard grass combined with a legume is ideal. Redtop is a grass I would contemplate for waterways if you intend on grazing them. It’s pretty rhizomatous and so it’s durable while negating toxicity issues found in KY31. Don’t use K31 for pasture or hay ground. You’ll have issues.

You know your stuff. Agreed, Tall Fescue definitely comes with its challenges. We don’t and won’t seed with it. The farm we bought already had it established in a majority of the land. This breed of cattle is supposed to have higher tolerance to it, but that’s if we don’t screw up as we did. This is the first issue we’ve had thus far. The fuscue stock piles really well and all the animals have great body condition on it. We are currently managing our land to encourage more native warm season grasses. We just started seeing the first of the Big Blue Stem and Indian Grass. Things are really changing. Thanks for the feedback Zeb

I enjoy your channel... you definitely know your stuff. If you can reestablish native warm season, that’s awesome! We found Big/Little Blue the most challenging, but Indian and Switch were easier. If you intend on seeding to pasture in the future, consider that the pure live seed (PLS) of Big/Little is notoriously low, which is one reason its more expensive and more challenging to establish. There’s A LOT of pastures seeded to K31 in MO. Sounds like you realize this and have taken steps to mitigate any issues.

@@zebwalton979 Oh we don’t know much but we’re trying. We’re still in the early phases of learning and have a long way to go, but I’m really enjoying the process. I hope to continue learning new things the rest of my life, as true wisdom is the everlasting pursuit of knowledge. We might trial some areas with burning and no-till planting some warm seasons, but like you said, they are expensive and difficult to establish especially BBS and LBS. For now we’ll just have to keep managing properly and stop making mistakes:) I love getting feedback from our viewers. Thank you for the input and advice, I’ll take more if you got it👍Thanks again Zeb
Which one will take more 😉
