Coastal Foraging With Craig Evans

Coastal Foraging With Craig Evans

6 жыл бұрын

A bright Winters day on a beautiful beach on the Gower penisula in South West Wales. A few days earlier the temperature was around -6 to -7 degrees C ,It was 3 degrees C on the day (4 March 2018). Myself and my son Dafydd cook a foraged meal of Native oysters,scallops,cockles other clams,limpets ,dog whelks,winkles and Velvet swimming crabs.I made a sauce at home with white wine, cream and pureed onions. I precooked the noodles. I also roasted sugar kelp until it became crisp and brittle. I foraged wild garlic,wild chives and primrose flowers. I must add that I foraged the Oyster ,Scallop ,Cockles and clams in Pembrokeshire the previous day. I have highlighted the word octopus because I have only ever caught 2 live specimens in all my foraging career. The clip of the octopus was filmed 2 weeks previous to the rest of the film,but at the exact same location. There is no sound on the clip as it was filmed on my faulty mobile phone. You will see that "Llew" appears to try to eat the octopus,he doesn't eat it ,he is just very curious. I accidentally said that the sweet powder on the sugar kelp was "sorbitol" ,It is in fact a very similar natural sugar called "Mannitol"

I totally agree. Plus, we can't just go and forage like this. We have to have fishing license and forage a certain type at a certain season/months. And only parts of the coast is open for fishing/foraging.
@furryshrimp
@furryshrimp 6 жыл бұрын
I have a fishing license now and for California residents a year license is about $50 US, $5 more for an ocean extension. I ended up getting one for the grunion run, but will now more frequently go coastal foraging. Such strict laws here on foraging.
@silliepooh
@silliepooh 6 жыл бұрын
I’m in San Jose, north of Santa Cruz. The whole Monterey County is restricting mussels picking. I think clams as well. But I’ve gotta read the rules again. But Pacifica has an awesome pier for fishing and Dungeness crabs. I’ve got the annual license with second rod. Going fresh water foraging is pretty too, especially tiny green clams and signal crayfishes. Recommend you try them.

Sorry Max ,the octopus was eaten,octopuses are not rare in Wales but are normally found in deeper water and rarely found in rock pools.Many octopuses were washed up along the Welsh coast during the most severe of the winter storms,regards Craig

HA! YOu're right I missed that, fair enough. At first I was upset as I'm a scuba diver, and I've done Welsh dives quite a lot and never seen an octopus, but that's probably because they're A. Small & B. hunt at night. But this is a "Curled octopus", which numbers are "On the increase" according to Wikipedia. Carry on. (Still LOVE you vids & your DOG!)

Max Williams you're a gentleman in my opinion, I live in Southern California, quite common here, caught one once fishing on a pier, about the same size as Craig's, it plopped itself off on to the pier and I reached down and grabbed it not expecting it to grab me back 8 times over in a startled reflex I flung it off my hand and it sailed a good 50 meters spinning like a frisbee!

Hi Craig! Glad to know the prawns are still there. If I was still in Wales I'd come down for a visit I think. btw I used to be on TV back in 1998 on In Full View on BBC Choice and here I am doing some coastal foraging in Ogmore. I wrote on the subject for Welsh Coastal Life a few years back too: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/brucjb2etKeUZqs.html

Yes, the quality today is amazing! That video of me isn't that good qualitywise cos it was copied from an old VHS video. Some others I had couldn't be copied. VHS is a thing of the past now.

Great to see as always, thanks Craig. Today, I popped to Seaton Sluice to see if there was some loose seaweed to gather for the garden.... Never seen anything like it! There was about 4 tons of seaweed washed up on the shore along with dead squid, lobster, crabs, fish, starfish etc. It was both devastating for the sea creatures and incredible to witness.

Thank you Moira, I have seen the reports of the dead sea life in your area,the sea temperature must have dropped to below what the creatures could tolerate,but that is nature-no such issues down here ,regards Craig
