I thought I'd take my stealth micro camper van out and test out some low power / low watt electric heater options for winter van life in the UK.
In this stealth camping episode I find a park up right on the beach, and do some van life cooking that exceeds expectations!
These links will take you to the heaters on Amazon:
250 watt fan heater: geni.us/250wFanHeater
500 watt fan heater: geni.us/500wFanHeater
200/400/600 watt radiator: geni.us/LowWattRadiator
And if you are interested in the ecoflow delta 2.
Amazon: geni.us/EcoFlowDelta-2
Direct from ecoflow: uk.ecoflow.com/products/delta...

Try an electric blanket, they use about 12 Watts on low and are a real game changer. :)

Pro tip for oil heaters, you got to put it on full blast until the top of the heater is a little warm then turn it down to lowest setting to maintain the temperature.

Yeah I was thinking that could be a good idea. But for the test I wanted to keep it simple. But I’m glad the fan heater seemed to do better because it’s so much smaller!

Signs are going up everywhere these days, England hate campers and most places are trying to drive them out. Shame really, as they’ve gold in their purses to spend, but bleeding councils. The sign in the video, looks home made, so probably a local. I’d have cut it down as can’t be enforced.

I live in my car, and its hard to find places to stay. the few have ruined it for the many. its the people that leave the place they stay in a worse state by leaving rubbish and even dumping the toilet waste. and some bring the noise. music, shouting and that. if you watch adam on wondering where on this platform he did something cool on one of his vids. he said he takes a little bag out and cleans up as much mess as he can to give van/car lifers a better rep. if we all chip in doing that. hopefully people will see we aint so bad. but ye, it is getting harder to find nice places to stay more an more.

Get a couple fire bricks that will hold and radiate heat. Whenever you're cooking, surround your pan with the bricks they will heat up and then radiate for quite a while.do this in front of any heat source to conserve and transfer heat. even a bag of sand can help with this. I've known people that keep them near the engine while they're driving and then bring them inside when they stop.

Good luck with the channel man. I'm the same about heaters - Diesel not stealthy, and almost overpowered in a microcamper. I'm running a 600W ducted heater from my lithium setup. Was stupidly expensive, more of an experiment but works super well. Nice testing btw. Owners of bigger vans flat out deny that battery-heating is viable in some cases. I made myself a 12v timer circuit powering some relays, set to 10-min. Means I don't kane the battery from falling asleep. via 240v there's good cheap timer plugs as you mentioned.
@Adz
@Adz Жыл бұрын
Thank you! And yeah I think in bigger vans that’s when electric becomes less viable but I’m determined to get through the winter without a diesel heater 😂 although if it’s too much of a struggle I may end up giving in. But for now the fan heater is working well!

@@Adz You can do it! Wondering how you charge your power unit - I have direct-to-alternator charging so i get monster rates of about 70A, but a 50A DC-DC charger should get your battery charged in ~2hrs of driving, which is easily done if not sitting on a campsite which you don't seem to do.

Nice! I have a small 300w ceramic heater that is similar to the 250w you used. One thing I noticed is that you have to turn it off with the power switch so that it can run the fan to cool it down since it is made of plastic. It would be nice to be able to run it with a remote switch but that would be dangerous if you just cut the power to it after it got hot.

When I had the capacity to use electricity in my cargo trailer conversion, I found out that oil-filled heaters were the best for my situation. I found that the heaters with fans did not give me as consistent a heat throughout the trailer, five foot by eight foot. The oil-filled heater at about 600 watts was filling the entire trailer with a very consistent heat down to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit. I did not do experiments below 20 degrees Fahrenheit outside. My trailer is fully insulated. One other tip is to put the heater on the ground, if you have clearance to combustibles. This is of course because heat rises. Without the capacity for electricity, I use propane with a very large skillet on top of an open burner. It keeps the heat from rising and is not oppressive and too much like using a Buddy heater. I can set the burner on the very lowest setting and the pan radiates the heat much more efficiently. I use less propane this way.
@Adz
@Adz Жыл бұрын
It would’ve been good if the radiator worked well in my van because it’s the only one I’d trust when I’m asleep. Although I also have an electric blanket now to run through the night and that’s a great addition to the small fan heater for my situation!

Catylitic gas heaters are superb and don't kill you which is a bonus! Can get them in cabinet (black cat) or as a small separate unit (Alke)...very little condensation as well, I use one in van and at home.....take care & keep the excellent content coming

Great video again Ad 👌🏻 Interesting to see the comparison of those heaters... The face one really made us laugh 🤣🔥 "I'm starting to trust it" haha! Your duvet does look like "the one" too 😅 ... Always so amazed at how well you have got everything in your van 👏🏻 ... Thank you for the share too 🙏🏻🎥 .. Until the next one, take care 😁

Thanks guys! Yeah I thought the conclusion would be that none of them are any good but that small 250w one is actually decent! And yep that duvet is definitely the one haha

This is the first time I've come across your channel 🙂 After watching your carefully thought out tests and laughing at your description of that death ray heater with disturbing face (I can't work out if it's friend or foe either!). It reminded me of the cartoon The Brave Little Toaster 😂 I read the comments which revealed someone who took time and thought over his replies as well as his uploads. I've done vanlife for many many years and when diesel heaters became cheap I swapped an open window and a gas ring (and indoor swimming pool) and treated myself. I do take your point about less stealth. Mine is a large transit and the exhaust is hidden near the back axle. In regard to noise it can't be helped but I use my common sense keeping the heat in my van so I run it less. In Winter I use the cab doors to get out and have a thick curtain over the side loading door and a stuffed draught excluder sausage on the side step. I built an insulated wall and hatch between the cab and living space and a 2kw heater is great with a split connector blowing into the garage under my bed and one blowing into the living area. 5kw was too hot. Thanks for the upload 🙂
@Adz
@Adz Жыл бұрын
Yeah I’ve heard the 5kw ones are too much for most vans. I do think diesel heaters are great products. And I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting one when k upgrade to a slightly larger van. But yeah I just think in this small van, if I can get away with a small electric heater that’ll be ideal for me. I can imagine once you get a diesel heater you wouldn’t want to go back to the options that require ventilation though! And yeah that ‘double death bomb’ heater is something that I would steer well clear of 😂

@@Adz definitely too much in your current van! Stick with the electric ones while you can. You’d pass out with a diesel heater in there 😂
