Happy to be along for the ride! My favorite episode is the one where Beast Boy is infected with super rabies that turns him into a werewolf. Raven is nearly killed by a mysterious attack during the night and everyone assumes Beast Boy is now an evil monster. BB is my fav character so it was nice to get a dark, serious episode centered around him.

DJtwister 25 Season 1 is the only one who received a lukewarm critical reception. The others were heavily acclaimed. If we think about the best episodes of Teen Titans, only Nevermore, Switched and The Apprentice generally are in the conversation when it comes to season 1 for me. Season 2 and 4 were the best, season 4 was fantastic specially. Raven's arc is just the best thing of the whole series.

Actually, I'd say that the problems in Season 1 (and 2 on a lesser scale) aren't in Season 3 and onward, especially since the show stops focusing so heavily on the "moral of the story" and gives the characters more development.

I think the worst part about the old series is that it got cancelled and didn't even wrap up the plot it had just started. As a kid my sister and I were always quite sad we never got to see the end of it, so we were so heartbroken years later when we found out it was in fact the last episode. As heartbroken as Beast Boy :(
@bunsmasterbunny
@bunsmasterbunny 6 жыл бұрын
The last episode was a conclusive ending. It’s bittersweet but it tells us that not everything can work out how we want. It ties the show ending into the characters relationship perfectly.
@zapzya
@zapzya 6 жыл бұрын
There's like, several plot threads opened in that episode that are left hanging, mainly Terra and Slade returning. How did they return? Did Slade even return (presumably he did)? Moreover, there were plans to have a 6th season, so the shows creators weren't trying to wrap things up. Sure, you could take the message of "not everything works out", but there are still a bunch of questions with no answers (or just unsatisfying ones). It's clear they were setting up for another season and its only conclusive if you try to see it that way. Considering it's a finale, it is a conclusion in some form, but not a complete one.
@zapzya
@zapzya 6 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. I respectfully disagree that it was a good ending though. I'm not personally a fan of sad endings with mysteries left unexplained and would have preferred it if it had ended one episode sooner. Not that I don't ever enjoy sad endings, this one just didn't sit right with me.

Sorry, but i do have to disagree on Two points. I think the order of the episodes actually makes sense. It seems to be done in a way that implies that there was passage of time between one Meeting with Slade and the other, making the amount of frustration Robin is felling have a lot more context. Think about season two too, think about how weird it would have been if the show just brought terra back the episode she was gone? I actually think this sort of passing and spacing between parts of a single story arc makes the show overall more effective. So yeah, i think it makes sense, Slade is patient, he would rather wait than rush operation and risk getting caught by the titans, so there are a few episodes of downtime. I would also like to mention, that the parallels drawn between Slade and Robin are that they are both manipulative( obvious with Slade, shown in Red X with Robin) and obsessive (Specially with one another) so it is kind of a well established parallel.

To add to the critice the gears in Slade's rooms are meant to show that his plans are in motion. The only time the gears stop is when Robin takes in the nanomachines thus stopping Slade's plans and stopping the gears. Another point on Slade's room is that we deliberately don't know anything else about him other than his opsession with Robin. We don't know his motives, philosophy or even a bit of his backstory. We know nothing thus we see nothing but his plans in the room.

I personally loved the Slade/Robin Arc specifically the best out of all the arcs. However, I think it was mostly my imagination filling in the gaps, and using info from later seasons to make it more compelling than it should have been. Probably not the best way to look at something objectively, but I something personally don't feel guilty about doing. My view of the season 1 arc was like this (3 page essay incoming): We have Robin here that recently left Batman because he felt that Bruce's style of silent obsession and determination to stop crime and avenge his parents lead him to become too dark and harsh with criminals to get what he wanted to know. He leaves Gotham, goes to Jump City, and gets some friends he is willing to share his life and feelings with, who he can connect with and show his true personality. Then comes Slade, an almost wraith like being, unable to be grasped or captured, someone who seems to be always one step ahead of him on the strategic front and can easily best him in a fight, and can almost look through Robin into his mind. He can't outsmart him, he can't outfight him, he can't even really get close to him. This is something he has NEVER seen Batman deal with, and as such is almost a mental torment to him because he can't understand how to overcome it. He becomes so obsessed over Slade he becomes emotionally and morally clouded, and decides he can't trust his friends, they will only slow him down, he can't play Hero, that doesn't work against such criminals. He can't stick to the light, he has to go under the table to get what he wants. This is exactly what he left behind, but for now he can't see that. So Red X happens, and Robin is proven once again to be 3 steps behind Slade no matter what he tries. Then the Apprentice episodes (with a great dream scene also) and Robin has basically lost his way in terms of what is acceptable for him, attacking someone who he has no evidence against, but thinks *might* know something about Slade (resemble anyone?) and is constantly edging ever closer to the one he proclaims he is nothing like. He can feel that too, but can see no other way to win. He gets separated from his friends, but discovers a way to get close to Slade. Seizing this opportunity, he abandons them completely in pursuit of Slade, and once again falls into his trap. Think about Robin now, a month ago, he had everything he wanted. He left Batman to do a more dignified style of crimefighting, gained himself 4 friends he is close to and cares about, and could act like himself, now here he is, having returned to an antihero status even worse than Batman ever was, abandoned his friends in a desperate pursuit of someone he couldn't overcome, now under the control of Slade, forced to fight his friends and become an enemy of the law. Then the turning point, where after having fought and beaten his friends, refuses to hurt Starfire, and realizes for the first time how much control Slade has over him, how much he has lost in pursuit of him, and how close he is to losing the battle to not become like Slade. In fact, he already lost the battle to separate himself from Batman, and is well on his way to become worse. Robin then makes the decision to put what he has gained over his own life (and sure enough his friends are also willing to do the same) and overcome Slade through it, validating his beliefs on the importance of having people he cares about close to him, and through that becomes different from Batman and overcomes Slade which he couldn't do without it. A satisfying and deep character arc to start off a legendary series (we still have 2.5 such arcs left) Another great thing about Teen Titans is that the characters are rarely perfect after having overcome their challenge and still struggle with their personal issues, and in Haunted (the best singular episode IMO) we see that Robin still has to struggle with his obsession countering his desire to care for the people he cares about. These are the things that stick around in your memory for years, and still have an effect on you to this day.

I think Mad Mod was the first episode I saw of Teen Titans, and then the Switched episode. Those two definitely got their share of reruns. To be fair, they are the more filler episodes that you don’t really need context to understand and thus are easy to air individually

I think I saw "Switched" first when I was younger. Do you think some of the episodes might be better to watch out of order? Specifically I'm thinking of "Sisters". I think it might actually be better when watched slightly later in, because if you know Starfire and her relationships with the other characters a bit better, there's more of an emotional impact when she feels cast aside for her "cooler" sister. Plus the impact of the revelation that Starfire has a sister at all. I was actually shocked watching this to realize it was the SECOND episode. Anyway, really enjoying the series Lowart! I think you make a lot of good points and it's interesting to see some serious analysis without the nostalgia goggles.
@logkmusic5877

Yeah I think some episodes make more sense or seem better out of order, as long as you keep the arcs and storylines somewhat in sequence. But I was also surprised when I found out "Sisters" was the second episode, because it seemed like a later episode, like a season 2 episode or something. It definitely works better if watched later.

If you liked "Nevermore" the best, then season 4 will probably be your favorite. It's by far my favorite season and I know many others would agree with me. The episodes that focus on Raven are almost always the favorites at least for most people that I have talked to about the teen titans, and that season mainly focuses on her and her destiny. She has a lot of depth to her character even though she may not show it all the time. Her relationship with her father is brutal and there is more overall emotion in that season than the rest of the seasons combined in my opinion. You could say The Terra story arc was fairly emotional as well but the Trigon/Raven story arc is done so damn well. When I remember the original Teen Titans the first thing that comes to mind is the last 3 episodes of season 4 (The End parts 1-3) - The teen titans fighting evil versions of themselves(their demons), Robin having to team up with Slade in the underworld so that Robin can save Raven, and Slade can get his "soul.. or whatever it is" from the underworld, and the ending where Raven finally stands up to Trigon and defeats him instead of giving up on hope like she had before (which was something she learned from Robin, who wouldn't give up hope no matter what even though the world had basically ended already) The buildup to these episodes with "Birthmark" and "Prophecy" made it all the more epic and satisfying when the final battle arrived and many people say that all of those episodes combined is easily a movie quality story which I absolutely agree with.

You do not disappoint, man. These last few episodes focusing on the Robin/Slade arc were a turning point in the way I viewed the show. Until then, I enjoyed the general episodic stories focusing on the team doing what they do best. But once it got to "Apprentice" parts 1 and 2, the show went in directions with it's story that, to my then eight-year-old self, blew my mind: Robin joining the bad guy? No way! Having to wait a whole week to figure out how this was gonna end? Your killing me here! And then seeing Robin having to fight his friends despite not wanting to do so? Holy crap! And it all ends on such a satisfying end with them fight Slade. How that made me so eager for Season Two! In retrospect, I guess I learned to really appreciate storytelling where, for a time, things wouldn't be so cut-and-dry for the heroes, and how that can really elevate the stakes for them and make the resulting action so much more compelling. And given what would come in later seasons, it pretty much got better from there. :D I guess if you're doing a Part 3, then I once again await to hear what you have to say next. ;)

As a kid, "Apprentice" similarly blew my mind. I was shocked that a story like this could exist in a show I was watching. It sounds like we've had pretty similar experiences with this show :) Part 3 is in the works, so I look forward to hearing from you on that video, too ^_^

It's not even just a "things blowing my mind as a kid thing", in my experience. As a child I didn't get to watch TT in order most of the time, so I saw most of the episodes out of order except for the Judas Contract arc later on in the series. Rewatching TT last year (I'm 21 now) I was still quite hooked by the Robin-joins-Slade arc. Which was my first time seeing the episodes tbh. And it's not because I haven't seen this type of story in my 21 years of living, it's just that kids' shows are the last place I'd expect it. (Although I guess I *shouldn't* have expected less from a show that pulled off the Terra-Slade arc)

With your criticisms in mind, here's how I would have structured the first season. I'm not gonna drastically rewrite anything (though there are a few edits here and there) and this is more just about how to better use what's already here. Episode 1: "Mad Mod" A solid, standalone episode that heavily features the basic character traits of all the titans and really sells you on the blend of zany comedy, abstract visuals, and fun action that becomes the the show's identity. Episode 2: "Sisters" Dives deeper into Starfire's character and shows her dynamic with Robin in particular. Episode 3: "The Sum of His Parts" Dives deeper into Cyborg's character and further reinforces the team dynamics with the barbecue scene. Episode 4: "Divide and Conquer" Now the argument between Robin and Cyborg has meaning, thanks to having three episodes to get to know these characters. I'd also highlight that everything about Cinderblock releasing Plasmus and using him as a distraction for an attempted robbery shows that there is an intelligent puppet master in the underworld. The episode ends with Slade's reveal, saying he'll need to be careful about the Titans in his future schemes. Episode 5: "Forces of Nature" Everything about the conflict between Beast Boy and Starfire needs reworking, and overall the episode is too preachy. But by putting it here, right after the Cinderblock and Plasmus episode, we reinforce Slade's manipulative nature. Add in a scene of him ordering his men to move in to steal something or other right after he uses Thunder and Lightning to start the fire episode, only for Robin to interrupt him and then they start fighting. Slade retreats and then comments about Robin has piqued his curiousity. Episode 6: "Nevermore" This is the start of a string of stand alone episodes that give the audience an opportunity to take a breath after the last two episodes about Slade and familiarize themselves with other Titans. I put Nevermore first because it's the strongest out of these stand alone episodes and thus helps the audience get fully invested in the series. Episodes 7 and 8: "Deep Six" and "Car Trouble" These episodes are the weakest of Season 1 in my opinion, and putting them here in the middle of this little filler marathon makes the most sense since the audience is already invested from the stronger first six episodes. Episode 9: "Switched" The last stand alone episode, this is the first real episode with life or death stakes for our main characters and is the signal of a tonal shift for the last four episodes, which will form an arc leading to the season finale. Episode 10: "Final Exam" Replace the opening scene of the headmistress talking about HIVE with Slade commenting on how he's been observing the Titans in their battles against Trident and the Puppet King, thus making these stand alone episodes feel more important, and has devised a strategy to eliminate them once and for all, implying that HIVE only defeats the Titans because of Slade's manipulation. This helps better explain why HIVE becomes a joke in later seasons since they start operating independently of Slade, and having this episode so much later in the series really sells the shock when the Titans suffer their first meaningful defeat and start to fall apart. Instead of Slade explaining to the headmistress that the whole episode was to "deliver a message," we have Slade staring at the monitor and say to himself "I trust I have your attention, Robin." or something like that. Episode 11: "Masks" This is already a great episode, and all that needed changing was having it closer to the season finale to strengthen the overall narrative of Season 1. Having it right after "Final Exam" feels more plausible as well as it makes Robin's Red X ploy feel like a direct response to Slade using HIVE to temporarily take control of Titans Tower. Episodes 12 and 13: "Apprentice" I think having this right after "Final Exam" and "Masks" turns what was already a good two part season finale into a stronger four episode arc to close out the season.

I've enjoyed these two videos you posted. The title of these videos really caught my eye. I remember really liking the show but I don't remember if it was any good. Like you, there were occasions where my taste was questionable as a kid. For some reason I was hoping that Teen Titans wasn't as good as I remembered. I don't know why. Especially considering I love loving the things I love. I don't know, man. In any case, I look forward to seeing your thoughts on the rest. Nice work, man.

I will say that I think you're criticisms of this season are very valid. From what I remember, your gripes with Slade aren't really ever addressed fully but I do think he improves as a villain just because we want to see our heroes to triumph over him considering all the damage, both physical and emotional, he does to the titans by Season 5. That being said there are some stronger villains for this show that I look forward to you talking about (particularly the Season 4 villain and that villain's connection to a particular titan). Next season (which I'm pretty sure you've already watched) introduces Terra and with her a lot more of that nuance you were looking for, for Beastboy, so I'm excited to see you talk about it!
@bunsmasterbunny
@bunsmasterbunny 6 жыл бұрын
Terra's probably the best character in the show because of how realistic she is. Even with the fact they weren't able to use her as much as they wanted (She was originally planned as being in every episode of the second season but budget cuts didn't allow it) they still managed to make a very realistic and sympathetic character with a dynamic relationship to the rest of the team.

Me: AYYYY the second part is out! Let me just- Clinton joke: Me: ...*instantly clicks the like button without even knowing the content of the rest of the video* Real talk though, great continuation. Interesting point about how Raven and Starfire have the most characterization early on because of how "one note" they are for the most part. I never really took a step back to notice this when I first watched the show but you are completely right. I'm also glad to see you too felt the Robin/Slade comparison dynamic was strange considering we didn't really know anything about Slade in terms of how this show characterized him. This was a point I would often bring up to my friends for why I wasn't so much of a fan of their struggle early on in the series, because I, like you too, didn't really see what was so similar about them other than the fact that the characters seemed to think this. It was a lot of "telling' and not "showing" in this aspect, of course, as the show goes on, it gets a lot better. Great video once again, man. Really loving this series. Can't wait for the next vid. Have a great day!

+Subseven. To an extent perhaps but I think there's merit in looking at something on its own rather than comparing to to where it came from. After all that's how Superhero properties get away with vastly different tones and styles throughout their various incarnations. My problem with Mystery Incorporated aside from this is the portrayal of Velma and Scooby. Both are massive yandere's who have an out of nowhere obsession with Shaggy that borderlines on the creepo variety. I actually really like the other Velma, but the Velma in Mystery Incorporated is absolutely terrible and seems to not care whether Scooby dies in one episode because it would remove him from the picture. Not to mention her and Shaggy as a couple makes no sense when viewing their original universe incarnations who have no ship tease at all. Scooby also becomes a massive hypocrite later on when Nova gets introduced and no one calls him out on it. They both actively ruin the show for me. Then there's the fact that the ending is terrible. The Mystery the show builds up implies something special and unique but it's really the most generic doomsday villain you can think of. Then the ending itself is the most esoteric happy ending I've ever seen. It all feels so fake. Either way you look at the outcome it's still a terrible outcome but the show still treats it as being a good one. The only reasons to watch the show in my opinion are Marcy Fleech and Fred and Daphne's portrayals. Those are the only things that are good in it.

In my opinion the reason the messages and themes in BB's episodes are so on the nose and cheesey is because that's exactly the type of character beast boy is. He's blunt outgoing and knows nothing of being subtle. It makes sense that episodes revolving around him reflect that.

KamarTB no, the stuff you said was good until the Meet the weird element wizards. What I'm trying to say after they became Dragons and going future that's when the show went downhill. The writers didn't know what do after defending Shredder. You could tell. I didn't like the last season switching artsyle because it seems so weird and makes it feel like a different show. I wish they could have made Shedder Wars. I did like Movie crossing over 80's turtles and it was a good ending.

Hi Lowart, wonderful video, just chiming in to add to the discussion here: Season One was the only experience I had with the series for years growing up, as it was all I had the DVD for (Well, that and the Trouble in Tokyo movie, which I hope you review as well!) At the time, the Robin/Slade conflict was the most intense character stuff I had ever seen, and to this day the delivery of Scott Menville and Ron Perlman still gives me a sort of extreme nostalgia-based dopamine rush. That said, I agree with your critiques about pacing almost 100%. The season is definitely choppy and sometimes screws up basic beats needed to introduce villains and plots, as well as the main characters and relationships. Funnily enough, you mentioned "Mad Mod" and "Car Trouble" taking away from the focus of the overall story arc, well, they were added for just that reason! The creators wanted to add some lighter stuff before going into the darkest point of the season. The one thing you brought up I question is that Slade should have done a plot that didn't focus on Robin to begin the season: I believe his plans in "Divide and Conquer" are precisely this and that that experience sparks his interest with the teen heroes shown in "Final Exam". Backing this up is the fact that the creators began the season with no idea of what Slade's plan would ultimately be. In fact, they thought he would just be a Dr. Claw-esque villain in the shadows ordering around minions for the Titans to beat up. Opinions on the proper viewing order of "DaC" and "FE" cloud this, but I agree with you that production/DVD order is the way to watch the episodes (however wonky the setup my be). It is also a little unclear as to how long Slade and the Titans have been operational in Jump City (and the origin episode later on doesn't really help this), so there are still some timing things with this theory that are a little shaky. But hey! I love this show, and I have loved these videos. I just discovered your channel the other night because of them. I am on a Teen Titans review watching binge because of the post-credits scene of TTG:TTM, and I've gotta say, yours are my favorites so far! I can't wait for you to experience the rest of the show, it definitely stabilizes after Season One. Keep up the great work! P.S. - Mad Mod is definitely my favorite episode. Phenomenal animation and top-notch voice acting from Malcolm MacDowell! I used to watch it every day as a kid, and have now seen it easily 20 times since rediscovering my love for the show last summer, and quote it perfectly in my head with the appropriate music cues. What other show can do that?

I'm really looking forward to the Season 2 analysis! I really hope you enjoy it and understand the depth that the Terra character has (Despite the flawed execution from being unable to have her in every episode), a lot of people don't seem to get the subtle intricacies of her character which is a real shame because she's unquestionably the best version of the Terra character.

I think you are wrong sir, if they had slade episodes back to back to back the show would have been far less fun, and you have to show more time passing between a fight with him and/or ruined plan to when he enacts his next evil plan. If he was just like oops i failed better try again, oops that one failed better try again, it would have been harder to keep peoples attention, especially kids attention.

(Your voice sounds a lot like KaptainKristian's voice. Not a criticism. Just pointing that out personally). This was actually pretty enjoyable though. After finding out that there was an Easter egg in Titans Go To The Movies, it was interesting to get this suggested and watching it. Though I don't exactly agree with some points (a lot of the episodes that you had a problem against in their order, I viewed and personally adore as standalone episodes), I still think you've been pretty fair with the show and I'll check out a part 3 when it comes out (also, the Mad Mod episode is still one of my favorites of this series. PUFFY having their music playing (which the repeat airings I think was to promote their new animated series which was coming out at the same time), the trippy visuals and just dope action make it a dope standout episode).

@bunsmasterbunny 6 жыл бұрын
The people who don't like Terra are honestly either those who don't understand how realistic she is, or just don't like her because of some of the things she does. Neither are really valid reasons in my opinion because everyone makes mistakes and her reasons for making those mistakes were not out of a desire to be a bad person.

TheZeldaExperienceWithin So you're saying everyone has to like Terra? Come on, man.
@bunsmasterbunny
@bunsmasterbunny 6 жыл бұрын
Didn't say everyone has to like her. But the people who don't like her need to understand her character better than they do because the reasons they've given are pretty terrible and are clearly coming from people who don't know what someone who's gone through what she did would think like (irrationally). It comes close to victim blaming.
@sub7se7en
@sub7se7en 6 жыл бұрын
TheZeldaExperienceWithin You kind of did. You said people who dislike Terra do so for the one of two reasons and if they dislike her for those any of those two reasons then their opinions aren't valid to you. That's just a convoluted way of saying they have to like her and if they don't then they're wrong. You really left no other options. I don't really remember Terra from the show, so I can't speak to whether I find her likable or not, but your logic isn't sound. People can definitely dislike a character that's had bad things done to them. Just because she's had problems in her past doesn't mean she should get a free pass for being irrational, as you put it. If she's doing things that people don't like then that's a perfectly valid reason for people not to like her. Her being an accurate portrayal of what someone who's gone through trauma would be like may make her a good character and well written, but it does not in any way mean anyone has to like her, and it does not mean she's inherently a likable character. I don't know if you've seen Game of Thrones. If you haven't, I won't spoil it for you, but there's a character who's disliked because of the terrible things they do. This character didn't have the best upbringing. An absentee father who takes no interest in the character and an overbearing mother. They grew up without consequences and disciple so they could not grow into someone who is a well-adjusted person. People still hate this character. Based on their actions it is perfectly reasonable to hate this character. It doesn't matter if bad things have happened to them. This is just one (albeit vague) example, but the logic is applicable towards any character. I've written way too much about this already. I had no intention to write such a long comment. The comment isn't about Terra, however. It's more about your attitude and closed-mindedness. I hope this finds you well. Peace.

I'm really enjoying this series so far! Thank you for taking the time and putting in the effort to make these, they're a real treat. I'm also happy to see that it's all about my favorite show as a kid. Even now, there's no way I could even try to look at this series without nostalgia goggles. I know it's not perfect, and can even be extremely flawed, but in the end, I just love it so much that I end up not really caring about those things. It's kind of like how you noted that by the end of the season, you were starting to get those same feelings you had as a child. I just kind of tend to let that blind me, and I'm sort of content with that. It's interesting to see the point of view of somebody trying to put aside those feelings from when they were younger and seeing how well it holds up to their current standards, though, so thank you. You're stronger than I am. And I also hope you like the rest of the show!

I finished the first part a few hours ago, I'm glad to see part two is up! I've actually been watching a lot of Teen Titans videos lately. Perhaps I should rewatch the series sometime, myself.

Your videos are awesome! They really hit home for my teenage self (I was 17 when I first watched the shows). These shows actually introduced me to Slade as I never knew who he was until then. I was genuenly scared of him as a kid... But he always remended me of a hornet... And hornets are scary in the first place! I love your genuine kindness and appreciation at the end of your video. It was very heartwarming and awesome. You don't see much of this kind of fan appreciation on this plateform lately.

I had a DVD of a few episodes of TT, and I’d rewatch it all the time. Thank you for reminding me of it! Also, you should do an episode on your favorite childhood shows sometime, that’d be fun to watch!

Without going into spoilers, I will state this. Season 1 of Teen Titans is my least favorite out of all of them. For most of the reasons you brought up in your videos. With all of its pacing flaws it seemed as if the creators didn’t know what they wanted the show to be yet. The later seasons do fix this in my opinion. But it seems as if almost half the episodes are filler and the other related to an overarching plot. This can be good and bad at times.

And it just gets better and better as the Seasons go on! It really does have a pretty rough start with a few good moments but by season 4 it's excellent!! Really enjoying these analysis, I agree with every point you make.
