This device is gold!!! Today is June 1st and I have the Time Advantage power rate and from 1 pm to 7 pm CT my rate triples from 10.88 to 30.88 cents per kilowatt hour. The actual charge is 5.5196 to 25.5196 but I also factor in the fuel recovery charge and everything else short of state tax. I use timers on my two refrigerators and freezer and they're set to turn off from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 with a two hour window in the middle where power is on. This allows me to average that higher rate out to the normal rate. I also have a timer on my water heater and it's set for two hours a day and that's it. It's important to remember the refrigerator's power usage varies throughout the day, so you need to test it with timers and no timers and compare the overall difference. I'd give the world if they made a 240 volt version too. I've done everything humanly possible to be as efficient as possible but there is also a common sense element to all of this. If the payoff in savings is quick enough, by all means go for it. Now that LEDs bulbs are available that doesn't mean I'm going to change out all my CFLs to save more!

Cool. I wish I had a timer on my electric water heater. I'm thinking about hiring someone to install one. I've tried turning it off for a whole day and the water was still hot enough to shower with the next day. I think it may only need to be on once a day. Regarding your CFL bulbs, just wait until they burn out and then you can replace them with LED. That would probably be the smartest thing to do and the cost of LED bulbs will only continue to get cheaper and cheaper. I remember when they first came out, they were like $40. Now you can get them for like $10.

I have one.... Love it.... Shows me how many watts I'm putting into the house from my solar panels..... My best for a while was 158 watts.... Rewired my system. now I can pump into the grid, on a clear day, 174 watts.... Love this meter!!!

This is a great video. As a suggestion, plus the device into an extension cord and plug the extension cord into your outlet. This way you can put the meter at a level where you can see it without bending down.

I have one of these. I tested just about everything in the house. It certainly make you aware of where your energy hogs are. I found out that my de-humidifier in the basement uses 681 watts when it runs and increases to 720 watts when the condensate pump kicks on. I need to keep that thing running at the bare minimum!

The cable box costs $600-$1000. every year just for one t.v. if you have 2 multiply by 2x etc. What you can do is call Charter your cable company and request a more efficient cable box and if you don't need the DVD player that will knock $12 off your cable bill every month.

Next look at the PF button on the device, it is to measure the Power Factor of a device used. It is read as 1.0 for 100 and the lower it goes the device will consume more power. Lets say that the PF indicated is 0.65, that means that the device needs 35% more power to run and it will draw 35% more power. The best things to do is to get the PF fixed.

I assume you could use this for NAS to determine the amount of wattage you need? Just plug a desktop computer in - put a graphics intensive game on to measure wattage? Then try out a monitor next, and a NAS after that? etc.

Hi Phototristan, do you have a Grid Tie Solar System in use?..I have a question that you might be able to answer me!..Is this meter bidirectional whem measuring Kwatts? i.e...if you plug the output of your inverter directly in the meter, as it is to measure the power consumption of any devise, it will give the amount of power the inverter is feedding in the mains?...I have seen some you tubes guys doing this with the meter, and I wonder whether if it is wright or not!...could you or anybody help me?

I don't have a Kill A Watt. I do however have an Omnicharge with an AC plug rated for 1000watts. If you plug something in that goes over a thousand Watts it shuts down. Led lights, the tv, surprisingly an Xbox One s, a asthma nebulizer machine, works, about anything that draws electricity to convert into heat I.E. tea kettle, popcorn maker, microwave oven, space heater, will over current and stop instantly.

That was helpful but I am still confused. I purchased this and I was using the last button since there are no instructions. I plugged my lap top in for an hour and it said 0.02 and multiplied that by 24 hours and got .48 and then when I multiplied that by my rate which is .2145 I got .10 and multiplied that by 30 and the total was 3.09. So my laptop is costing me 3 bucks a month if I was using it 24/7?! That does not sound right. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Quick question chief, does you kill-a-watt p3 meter seem to underrate wattage consumption on electrical items that you plug into it? I plug in some thing that is 120w and it says it only consumes 48-50w I plug in some thing that is 19w and it says it only consumes 7.w ~ 0.06Amps is there some thing im missing here?? im a little confused. Why does the meter do that? is mine defective. I measured amperage with my multimeter as well, on the 19w item and it says 0.07 A Can you explain please..??

I need to get this. We unplug a lot of stuff At home out of habit, like a blender, our water kettle, coffee grinder, etc. with the assumption that maybe they have vampire draw. But It would be nice to know for sure which ones we need to unplug. I’m curious, which Remote control power strip are you using? I could for example outfit my house with those Wemo Smart plugs, but at $20-$30 each would probably take me two years to recover those costs. (Well, I guess that depends on how many vampire draw devices I actually have. So if there’s only a couple and maybe that would be worth it)

Power/watts = voltage x current. In your example with the battery charger it was drawing about 45 watts but when you went to amps it said 0.8A. 120V x 0.8=96 watts. So why is your meter saying 45 watts?

Hi I just got this device to see how much each appliance is costing in electricity per month. I can figure it out manually using kwh and the cost per kwh from my electric bill. Will this model do the calculation for me or is that only on the better model. If it can, can you walk me through getting the device to calculate yearly electricity cost for me. If it can't I think I should have spent the extra 5 dollars for the better model. Thanks

Anytime you plug anything into a wall socket, you are drawing current.If the device is plugged in, on or off, it draws current. To actually save money on your electric bill, unplug the device from the wall ( when not in use) and put in a plastic plug that, they make for protection purposes.When a wall socket(outlet) has nothing plugged into it, it is wasting electricity because, there is still electricity flowing into the wall socket.Wasted electricity is called "EDDIES." This was explained to me by a Master Electrician. Hope this helps.

Neil Williams electricity does not leak out of empty sockets. Somebody was pulling your leg. Electricity only flows when it is in use. If there is not a complete circuit, there is no usage.

I very much like this informative video. The only thing I noticed was that you mentioned having a remotely-controlled power bar. Of course, that itself uses vampire power too. Why not a switch manually operated?

+Len Jeffrey This is true. You have to also measure the remote control power receiver. Mine typically draw 1 or 2 watts, which is a lot better than 10 watts for example so I still save money this way.

Keep in mind your laptop is not on 27 hours a day, seven days a week. If you have a Kill-A-Watt EZ. It will give you the cost per month. You program the electric rate, it will give the estimated cost by the day, week, month and year.

Laser printer needs to self assist its drum in turning every so many sleep cycles to keep it from defecting or warpage. Power cords tangled and looped will draw power hince cable organizer lead to consumers roll their cable mess in loops and tie strap or Velcro tied., draws electrical current as electricity becomes magnetic flux... Stuff people should know and learn owning electrical and electronic appliances saving money like in this case laser printer is wrong approach..it will cause more damage in premature maintenance defects.

+Bjr Adrian Obviously you can't, because these appliances (refrigerators, water heaters, etc.) are not vampires. They're meant to be always on.The only thing you can do is to look at the efficiency rating of the appliances when buying them. Nowadays a class A appliance is considered be only average in efficiency because the rating already goes as far as A++++. So don't be surprised if you have class A appliances and your electricity bill is too high.As for the HVAC systems, well, if you live in a normal house and not in a factory or an office, just don't use any. It's nothing but a luxury, and the first things you have to cut down when you're worried about bills are luxuries.

I just got my meter. Only tested the bedroom so far. Electronics in my bedroom that were plugged in, but turned off...yet still drawing power. 40watts total over all the devices, being consumed 24 hours a day for no reason. Multiply that by an entire house. I could be saving a couple hundred watts total x 24 hours a day = potentially a couple hundred dollars a year. Add in large families and higher rates in other states, and you're talking 500 bucks a year saved.

A monthly deposit of $10.00 for 10 years with an interest rate of 6.50% compounded Monthly = $1,685.94. Figure out a couple more ways to save $10 a month and you could have a good chunk of cash.

Jon Smith - I believe you are mistaken about your cable box. If a cable box were to cost me $60 per month, at my rate of $0.11139 per KWh, the cable box would have to be drawing 748 watts continuously. In other words, you’d be able to cook your breakfast on it. Just for reference, I have a Directv HD DVR receiver. It’s rated at 50 watts max, but only draws 45.5 watts when turned on.

Our house and guest cottage electric bill is comparatively equal to the condo I’m trying to get ready to sell, we did some basic calculations based on usage and time on both mirrors- The staff at the gated community we live in had no problem taking a snapshot of the reading on ours in the village; I had to have to MEA send a technician convincing them I was concerned that, all variables being equal, the bill at our condo I only go to every other week for a few hours then turn off the breaker switches, also, not excluding our breaker being left on at home as a variable against power consumption and time, has cost a whopping 38% per month more than a four bedroom, two story house and cottage each room fitted with air con units. We live in SEAsia, so gas heating isn’t a cost concern. 5 bucks or 50, if this unit saves that cost while we get ready to put it on the market, then it is of equal importance because like most folks, we like saving money, keeping money, don’t like throwing money away at video game theaters or whatever that thick headed jackass is going on about up there. Sorry for the leud manner of speaking but that guy was an easy target.
