Lowrance HDS12 - Another one with a screen defect! - Buyer Beware!

Today we have a Lowrance HDS12 with several issues;
Display has what appeared (to the customer) to be water damage
Sonar connector was accidentally ripped off the board by the customer
Device won't power on..
This is the second HDS12 we have worked on with a screen defect. We are convinced this is a manufacturer defect. If buying a used HDS12 be aware that this issue exists, and keep an eye out for it!

Not surprised that Lowrance has factory defects. My experience with their equipment and customer service was horrific. Wish I had known abt your services a few years ago.

You sure brought that back from the grave. Got a couple 9 gen 3's to send I filled out the estimate repair form but think I'll just have you do the bench estimate to speed up on my end.

Nice repair friend! that digitizer cleaning, seems a bit risky to me for disasembling and cleaning :). you are good! Thx for sharing with us the procedure :)

Mine has the same gel separation but it also has a black film layer that’s showing cracking where the image looks brown/dark. Can this black film also be removed? Where the cracks are the image is clear/viewable. I’m guessing this film helps contrast in sunlight.

That's strange.. can you email us a picture of it? We haven't run across that yet. Maybe it's the backlight diffuser layers? Strange..

Do you apply glue to the entire screen or just the parameter? You never showed that in the video. Just the removal of the old adhesive thanks.

I would like to try saturating the entire screen with clear silicon, however for me it was too much of a risk as I am not sure what the outcome will be (and of course do not want to use a customer unit for this kind of test!). Therefore just used adhesive around the perimeter. Make sure the digitizer and LCD are very clean to ensure no finger prints or dust.

Had that screen issue happen in one corner of a Gen3 Touch….lucky it was still in warranty and was replaced

Curious if you can fix units with failed firmware update issues?

I haven’t had any come in yet with firmware that couldn’t be updated in the normal way- but definitely capable of chip-off-board firmware dumping and burning. I have experience in doing things like this for other devices- just never had the need for fish finders...yet 😀 whenever I get some free time I’d like to play with some security research re: Lowrance units. They have some very nicely exposed points on the board that are just begging to be tinkered with (external video? UART? And lots of other hidden gems 😉).

what type of wire did you use to split the digitizer and lcd.

In the past (in a pinch) I’ve used regular enameled wire (something like 26ga), but in the video I used this: Golden Molybdenum Wire Cutting Line with Handle for iPhone Samsung Glass LCD Screen Separator a.aliexpress.com/_mNNBg2K A piece of guitar string or piano wire would work perfect too 👍

First warm day in spring and out on the boat I was shocked at how hot the screen of my Lowrance Elite FS was. I Googled about this and many other Lowrance owners have reported screens becoming extremely hot, some shutting down due to the heat, and erratic operation also. It's a catch 22 because you need full screen power/brightness on a bright sunny day, so you get both heating from the full screen power plus radiated heat from the sun, as well as the warm ambient temperature. Seems like a very poor design, but I wonder if the sounders of other manufacturers also get this hot. Wonder if the heat generated could also contribute to this screen defect in your video.

Hi Keith, from my experiences the heat comes from the sonar circuit. The sonar power mosfets generate a significant amount of heat.

@@rudolphelectronicrepairllc8938 Thanks very much for that info. I can now try disabling the sonar and run the screen at full brightness. Come to think of it the unit never gets hot when I'm running it in the house with no sonar connected and the screen is on full brightness so that may be proving what you are saying.

MY HOOK 9 WENT BAD AFTER 4 TIMES IN THE WATER LESS THAN 6 MONTHS OLD AND ITS STILL UNER WARRANTY AND THEY WANTED 200 BUCKS TO FIX IT. I WILL NEVER BUY 1 AGAIN
