It's caused by a couple million years of evolution. Humans have instinct just like any other animal. Instinct influences behavior. Except our instinct had to evolve to defeat behavior influenced by cognative thought (aka intelligence). To defeat intelligence, instinct that is sneaky, stealthy, makes us momentarily dumb and irrational had to evolve. Our species evolved to cheat. There are biological mechanisms that are triggered under certain conditions...and it does it in a way that basically tricks you into that behavior. These mechanisms evolved over millions of years. It happens in a step by step way that truly feels like "it was a series of mistakes". Our biology uses 3 hormones to accomplish this. Seratonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Dopamine is expremely addictive and it's what causes the person to keep going back like a crackhead. Seratonin is an extremely sneaky hormone, it changes your inhibitions (how open you are to things)...plus is makes it feel like you've known the person since forever, and very easy to talk to, and very open to physical interaction. This specific hormone, is how Bill Cosby drugged and raped 50 women, who all technically consented (under the influence of a drug that triggers the release of Seratonin). Our bodies basically date rape drugs us into consenting into behavior we wouldn't normally feel comfortable with, exactly like Bill Cosby altered those women's seratonin for them to consent into sleeping with him. E.g. Human females evolved biological impulses when she is with a man who is unable to get her pregnant in the first 3 to 6 months. Our millions of years of evolution didn't encounter contraception. It is not "programmed" to deal with contraception. Our biology just assumes the other person is infertile. So the female's body goes into plan B. First the woman stress tests the man's ability to be a father by emulating being a child (she will unintentionally act like a child to test if he can be a good father to a child and thus test if he's worth keeping around...if he fails, she will eventually leave). At the same time, she will begin to explore her options. Plan B, is to find another guy who is genetically superior who kinda looks like him, and does not form love bonds easily...in order to donate fertile sperm. If the woman is able to procreate with this second guy and sneak back undetected, she is rewarded by her biology with a feeling that feels good. If the woman get's pregnant, her hormones change and is released in her pheromones, her hormones trigger her biological mechanisms and that causes her to go back to being "faithful". Plus the guy's own instincts (which were also causing him to explore other options) are deactivated. He becomes extra attentive, protective, etc. Some forms of contraception work by altering a woman's hormones to trick her biology into "thinking" she's pregnant. Thus she can't typically get pregnant when on this contraception. But, those altered hormones causes her to act like a pregnant woman. Crave to eat, which triggers behavior to nag the man to be a man who provides more, who protects more(this includes protection from the elements), etc (since "baby is coming"). These hormones are also released in her pheromones, which triggers the man's biology. He becomes extra attentive and protective...because his biology doesn't know its just a hormone trick done by contraception. So he comes accross as smothering and controlling. (e.g. Imagine a pregnant woman going out late and doing risky things and things like drinking and partying, etc...from the perspective of our biology, the woman is not behaving like a pregnant woman should to maximize a successful pregnancy) For a man to cheat, all he needs is to find a woman who is emotionally involved with a man with inferior genes to his own, and if that inferior man's woman is willing, the original guy will cheat (donate his "superior" DNA). Human biology doesn't know about plutonic friendships between males and females either. Emotional attention from a male will make a female's biology think it's a long term partner. So a female with a "plutonic" male friend will trigger her own instincts to find a "pump and dump" guy. The instincts of the guy who "pumps and dumps", when that guy encounters her, is also triggered...to donate his DNA to this "childless couple" (aka a plutonic friendship). All life on earth exists for proliferation (to multiply) as much and as efficiently as possible. If proliferation stops, life stops to exist. Humans, like all other life, still exists because it kept on proliferating, and evolved to proliferate efficiently. Drug addicts typically make "a mistake" at some critical point that leads him down a path most don't intentionally plan to go down. A certain type of cheating happens in the same way (the type where at least some romantic feelings are involved, e.g. affairs, etc). When these people say "it's a mistake, they're probably being honest about how they feel". But honesty and truth is not the same thing. Honesty is to feel it's true...truth is what was verified as fact. So what they say is probably honest, but not true.
