I acquired a Designjet 500 that literally was rescued from the trash. It was outdoor, damaged by water, tree and plants debris, insect and rodent activity, belt melted, dust, dirt and tons of crusty old ink (which was the reason it was dumped). Several hours removing, washing, cleaning parts, replacing, and specially with this videos, The printer is up and running. Very happy with this machine and very satisfied that it was relatively easy to work on it. Thanks Bob. Hope you are well and healthy.

And once again a HUUUUUUUUUUGE thanks because it's exactly what happened to us, the printer was displaying a "chariot door problem", then l realized it wasn't running the whole way to the station because of the metal part no right on its place because the track wasn't aligned..., l understood what is was after watching this video !! What a big chance you recorded this one because then it was just working perfectly !! And it's really a great satisfaction when you see it working again, just imagine haha !! thx thx thx !!!

I had nothing but problems with my 500. Finally, one day I picked it up with my forklift and dropped in into the dumpster. Hasn't given me a lick of trouble since.

Also pretty common... excessive ink mist build up on Trailing cable... they get sticky, snag and can bend... and rubber on the tube set getting brittle.. otherwise not bad round up of carriage axis shutdown ;)

Hi Bob, Thanks. my mistake was not checking the encoder strip landing on the RHS of printer (Ink side). As you pointed out watch the head as it goes into the landing zone. Being a rather old printer all the plastic has gone bad & breaking up. Bought this for £150, have had to replace printheads & will be replacing the print cartridges due to age. Mainly used for printing drawings, but now want to start printing pictures & posters. Could I make a suggestion, when reconnecting the ribbon cables on the print carriage I damaged the connection strip, luckily I managed to sort this out, I separated the two cables & connected them on the second attempt. The foil detached from the membrane. Very Lucky. Again thanks. Either net does not work due to fault, card costs too much, so USB works fine. Cheers Ash

Thanks for the great videos. I purchased the belt kit and successfully replaced it. I had other problems with the power supply , so I replaced it also. Now I have a curious problem. I can print with the printer but once I turn it off, i cannot power it up again. Through trial and error I have found that if I remove the left end cover, and then replace it , the machine will power up and work fine. Once I switch it off I have to go through the whole procedure again. Can you think of anything that would cause this?

Hi. The shaking carriage motion is likely debris in the motor pulley from a disintegrating carriage belt. Check the condition of the belt near the motor. You will probably need to replace the belt and clean the motor pulley. Bob, I cleaned the machine, checked the coding strip, checked the cutter wheels and everything is fine. I was able to print after that but that was a week ago. Tried printing today and am getting the 86:01. It tries to print but then says there's a paper jam when there isn't one. Any other suggestions of things to try?

Hi@@LPSshowsyouhow Yes, I replaced the belt and it has a new formatter (it's only about 3 years old). The print carriage is not quite 1/2 way when it says it has a paper jam, and this is after it starts to print and has printed a few times.

We don't have plans for a video on the 500 trailing cable. The carriage end of the cable replacement is covered in our "500/800 Belt Replacement" video. Putting the TC on the Electronics Module can be made a lot easier by removing the 3 mounting screws on the Emod and pulling it out about an inch so you will have room for your fingers to put the cable in. Be sure to lift the connector clamps on the board before trying to insert the cables.

Thank you Bob ! That worked well ! Another tricky problem I have is, that the printer keeps wanting new printheads and the printhead calibration is aborted after printing only a small black bar rather than all the dots. Do you have any help for this issue ?

Hi Juan, The only way to reprogram the Emod is by putting a service station in the plotter that came from an identical plotter and when the plotter asks what you changed, choose "service station". The plotter backup ROM lives on the ink supply station. The menu won't allow you to change the model.

If I lock the service station in home position it stays locked and I get 86:01 error. When I unlock it by moving the gears and plug it in. It glides smoothly however the service station gears make a grinding noises like they want to move but can't. I get error 21:10 Both when the service station moves from home position and moves back to it. I have replaced a belt and a service station so far.any advice?

If you un-mount the service station from the bracket, remove it from the machine, leave the cable plugged in, and boot the machine, do you still get error 21:10?

@@LPSshowsyouhow I've tried this and the gears still seem like they want to move or are very jittery. It happens at start up the trolley moves on the belt when I comes back to home position it does the jittery thing again and still getting 21:10. This is with using a new service station

Hi Bob! I am a teacher of Drafting Drawing courses in Puerto Rico. I have a problem with the HP 800ps Desigjet plotter in the school. We began this school semester on August 14. When I pushed the on/off button , the green light flash a second just one time and nothing else happens. The machine was in a storage with A/C from May to August. Can help me in this matter? Hi Cesar. The power supply on this plotter has probably died. It is an easy fix. Take off the left end cover and remove the connector to the electronics module and take out the mounting screws on the PS and slide it out. One comment on these very old designjet plotters. why is it that home style inkjet printers are throwaways and noone repairs them yet these wide formst printers are not?. It seems there are msny of these old printers in circulstion and as you know a very popular fixable printer. But why do people fix them and not throw them away as they do with small office home printers. ? Actually these designjets msy be one of the only computer related tech items that dont just get tossed out just due to being obsolete sfter a couple years like every other comp related item.

Are you using a Jetdirect ethernet connectivity card to connect to your printer? For the Designjet 500 printer with an HPGL/2 accessory card installed, remove the memory expansion DIMM. For Designjet 800, try a different memory DIMM, then see if the problem persists. 61:05 can also be caused by faulty connections between the carriage flex cables and the printheads. Clean the electrical contacts on the printheads and on the carriage flex cables.

System Error: 61:05 Problem Description: Error Processing Job. This Error Code only appears in HP DesignJets 800 Series, or in the HP DesignJet 500 Series with an HP-GL/2 card installed, when processing either a PostScript or HP-GL/2 file. Corrective Action: Try the following: Switch the Printer Off and wait a few minutes. Switch the Printer On again and resend the file that you were trying to print. If the Error Code reappears after resending the file, then try generating the file again and try to print again. If the file that is causing this error is PostScript, check if it is Binary. If the file is Binary, use AppleTalk to send the file to the Printer. If AppleTalk is not being used to send the Binary file to the Printer, then change the PostScript settings to Binary through the Front Panel (Set-up menu / PS settings / Encoding / Binary). If the Error Code continues to reappear, check for a new release of the Driver.
