LR Baggs HiFi Pickup System Demo from Peghead Nation

Acoustic amplification pioneer L.R. Baggs has released its new HiFi pickup system. Consisting of dual bridge-plate sensors and active electronics, the setup promises natural sound for flattop acoustic guitars. In this video, Peghead Nation’s Teja Gerken demonstrates the pickup installed in a Martin OM-21 guitar.

I still love my baggs i beam pick up and the old para di pre amp box. I use k n k in my 000 18 and smaller sound hole guitars. I am also a big fan of the m magnetic series of baggs sound hole pick up.

Now I hear the Pickup in this video sound Very Nice other videos for the same pickup sound very bad I don't know which one to believe

I'd consider this product if it was available without a built-in preamp. To me, the main appeal of soundboard transducer pickups are their minimal invasiveness inside the guitar, and the ability to eliminate the clunky battery and preamp hardware from inside to whichever outboard system you'd like, i.e. so you have options. IMO, the built in preamp on this system short circuits that advantage, and you're left with something just a step above the typical garden variety under saddle pickup system.

I have an Anthem installed on two of my guitars. I would like LR Baggs to make and Anthem with the existing internal mic, but using the HIFI instead of the under saddle. I bet that would be fantastic!

That's kind of a "Norwegian Wood" approximation, but really just playing with those chords. - Teja Gerken

Are we hearing only the Di signal, or is it a blend with the room mic?

Hi Dennis - The first two examples are a combination of a DI and the room mic picking up the amp. The final example is just the DI, with the room mics muted.

@@pegheadnation An A/B of the mic'd guitar and pickup isolated would have been most useful to see how accurate the system is. Maybe with the B non-EQ'd and one EQ'd to tone match a bit.

I feel that every other pickup LR Baggs released after The Anthem and Lyric is a downgrade, at least to my ears. I have a Lyric on my J-15 and 3 other guitars with Anthem and I think they sound more like the guitar than any other pickups system. With I’m not saying that the HiFi is a bad pickup, it actually sounds pretty great, but not as good as the Anthem or Lyric, I would say that the M-1 is pretty darn good too.

I put a Lyric in a Larrivee OM but found it boxy sounding. I added a Fishman soundhole pickup and wired the two together. It sounds great with just a little of the Lyric blended in. But I spent the equivalent of an Anthem...

It does nothing for me....too trebly. Rather have the K&K or Journey.

Not a fan; I prefer an eq'd K&K over this any day.

Interesting we have to mention that we would eq something considering literally everything that hits a good soundboard gets EQ’d. How about, you prefer K&K? Biggest difference, K&K is glued in so the sonic transfer is greater plus there are 3 elements.

I really like the sound from a KK but it feedbacks like a mofo at higher volume which was needed in a band setting. Wondering how this sys would react.

I have a K and K in two of my guitars, and an older I beam in one and two lyrics and an L.R. Baggs Mi passive in three others....I prefer the baggs stuff, sounds more like the actual guitar than the K and K, so I disagree that the K and K has better sonic transfer...it sounds more "generic", the baggs more natural.

@@dietersdawgs I have no idea what preamps anyone in this thread are using, but one thing I can tell you for sure - as an audio engineer, a guitarist, and a salesman of guitars and Baggs, Fishman and K&K systems - the right preamp is essential to getting the purest sound reproduction of the acoustic guitar. All three companies make great products, and I have demonstrated for many customers how choosing the right preamp makes the K&K Pure Pickup sound brilliant. I have also shown customers how the Baggs Para-Acoustic DI can enhance their Baggs pickups. Many ways to get there.
