Édouard Louis, one of France’s most acclaimed young writers, shot to international fame with his first novel, the semi-autobiographical 'End of Eddy'. His third novel, 'Who Killed My Father', revisits many of the same locations and subjects - poverty, homophobia and social exclusion - in non-fictional essay form, and is a powerful polemic exploring the bonds, often persistent even when apparently sundered, between parent and child. He discusses it here with novelist and journalist Kerry Hudson.

Incredible interview. What a strong, vulnerable and poetic man. Full of compassion for the minorities and poorer classes of the world. So passionate in his beliefs for positive change. You deserve for your struggles to be taken from you, or at least to share the load of your struggles. Bravo !!

Un bonheur de t'entendre dans une autre langue, la distance de la langue projette une autre lumière. Delighted to hear you in another language, the distance of the language casts a different light, like a different point of view.

There is a specific rhyme, poetically in his speech, is it the heritage of France? Anyway, I like the sincere confession of interview!

Édouard Louis is a revelation to me, but when Kerry Hudson said, "a poverty that you were born into and that you didn't invite", I felt offended, even violated, because it excludes from the narrative and the conversation the difficult, painful experience of falling into poverty, which is my own story, and that of millions of others, and which certainly is not "invited", but caused by legitimate causes, and her wording implies guilt, from which shame ensues, and weaponizing guilt and shame against the poor, is exactly how the ruling class, the bourgeoisie, creates the painful exclusion and suffering that Louis writes about and against! I call out this glaring bit of cognitive dissonance, because it didn't get called out in the interview, probably because it was such a short, stand alone remark, and because it seemed appropriate to the subject matter of the conversation, but it actually wasn't, for the reasons that I hope I sufficiently explained. Language can be a weapon, a divider, but it can also be a healer, a closer, this poor poet knows, and as Louis Édouard undoubtedly knows.

Agree this comment did stand out - I took it as referring to the total lack of agency of children whereas adults do have varying degrees of agency. But yes, people don't generally 'invite poverty' unless you are George Orwell conducting an experiment for a limited time!

winehousedrunk Poverty is uncomfortable to those that never experienced it, and it may be difficult to properly adress it. I also Became poor (by divorcing a violent husband). The political systeme make me even more poor for every new year, even though I work hard, full time. There are winners and loosers. I'm not among the winners😱🥴 It was an incredible book, though, I really enjoy his writing. Thank God for (free) librarys!

I agree, so many people have "fallen into poverty" today and I agree 100% people are kept in shame and suffer in silence! The silence is where the power lies, people are always trying to stop people from speaking..... it is shocking!

I understand you may be hurt because you've heard people justifying poverty before, but I think it's a bit ungenerous to read her remark that way. She merely says that one of the horrors of his experience of poverty is that it wasn't invited, this does not imply that it normally is invited or ever is.
