LS/TH400 Install requires a bolt on adapter

The “Ring” adapter wouldn’t allow my torque converter to mate to the flexplate, there was a .200” Gap. 👎
The proper way to mount a TH400 to an LS engine with standard crankshaft flange is to use a 6.0 flange adapter, longer bolts, and a Flat flexplate.
A flat flexplate w/hub adapter puts the ring gear in the same position as a dished flexplate mounted to the flange/hub.

I have the dished flexplate and longer bolt kit. It bolts on the outside of flexplate. Got it way back when it was cheap. Clearances were good without any grinding but had to elongate my holes. I'm running a 2800 stall FTI converter.

Jeff Newman What Transmission was it? I’m curious what the difference in reach would be between your setup and the way I did it? The reach from the Crankshaft register face to end of the adapter would be long using it outside the dished flexplate, .800” + .130”= .930” 🤔. I’m curious which transmission this will work in?

Novac. I paid for a GM adapter to the AMC the 400. I'm now 4 weeks into a 2-week project. The engine was removed 2 times because the flex plate was too thick the 2 one was warped and now waiting for the third flexplate. Called Novac and was told they would talk to the boss and see if I could get some compensation and call me back Tuesday. It's now Sunday did I get a call? Nope. Try Trans dap.

@HeadFlowInc
@HeadFlowInc 6 жыл бұрын
Lime Well, you could use either, I chose to use Ultra Black RTV since I know it’ll seal the threads and not let oil seep out. For some reason LS engines will leak oil out the flexplate bolt holes, so I’m told. I can’t stand a leaking vehicle, so I try hard to avoid any potential leaks. 👍

harperjmichael No, the simple ring adapter doesn’t work with a TH400. The TH400 required the “Flat” flexplate and bolt on adapter. Go to the website in the description, it breaks down which engines/Transmissions and adapters work.

MATTHEW jacobs I’ll be totally honest, the 700R4 is a weak transmission. If you were building a 100% low power cruiser they can work but if you have any real power they just can’t handle it. GreyC5 There are specialty Race transmissions like a Liberty, Jerico or similar where it launches with a clutch and shifts like an automatic. This does not apply to a regular automatic like a TH400. jeremy rock Maybe 🤷‍♂️. I know I needed way more clearance than what the bb was blocking, at least I think. I don’t have the measurements off hand but there is a significant difference between the “reach” of the “Ring” & dished flexplate compared to the “Bolt on” adapter & flat flexplate. Either way you choose, be sure to verify the required space between the seated torque converter and mounting surface on the flexplate. 👍

@HeadFlowInc I have the flat flex plate and the spacer and there is still a gap between the flex plate and the torque converter what should I do now

Is that a B&M torque converter
@HeadFlowInc

Yes very loose B&M Holeshot 3000 converter. It didn’t stay very long, I’m using a TCI Super Street Fighter 3500-3800 w/anti-ballooning plate #241002 until I can afford to upgrade. JD

Do you think the B&M 20484 would work good

I’ll be honest, I’ve never used a B&M converter I’d recommend to anyone because they’re cheaply made for the price. You can get a entry level PTC converter for +- $500.00-$550.00 shipped. I can’t justify spending over $400.00+ on a B&M. The only off the shelf converter id recommend is the Jegs XHD converters made by TSI. Currently on sale for $337.99 are excellent quality with dual anti-ballooning plates rated at 800hp. Check them out in the stall range you need, if going turbo make sure it’s big enough to get into boost. JD

This video is misleading. The spacer would have worked. This issue was slag on converter from beginning.

Keith Walker It depends on which flexplate you use, I would not use the ring adapter with a dished flexplate it’s a cheesy pos but lots of people do. It’s a choice we all have to make. JD
