HOW TO PICK A WINNER! ASK THE RIGHT QUESTION! BEFORE YOU CAN FIND THE BEST TURBO CAM OR TURBO INTAKE FOR YOUR LS, YOU NEED TO ASK THE RIGHT QUESTION. MOST LS OWNERS ASK A PURELY SUBJECTIVE QUESTION ONLY THEY CAN ANSWER-WHAT IS THE BEST CAM OR INTAKE FOR MY TURBO LS. TO GET THE BEST COMBO FOR YOUR APPLICATION, THAT IS NOT THE RIGHT QUESTION!

we raced turbo cars in the late 70's forward... in all these years (and getting blackballed by NHRA) this is one of the first guys I have had that actually said anything about compressor maps... Live and die by those maps... and also knows that "bigger" is not always bigger... move that power downstairs a bit and use it there... all about combos

Every cam is the best cam to someone, this is why its important to figure out what you intend to do with the engine, then figure out what budget you realistically have and then you can figure out how much hp you can reliably make, make a plan, set a goal, get a good engine guy involved and listen to him! Thats the best recipe for completing a successful engine build for your project imho

Richard, excellent explanation on how boost just bumps up the curve. So many people out there talking out their tailpipe on Wednesday happens with boost. Well forum "experts" put a banana in that tailpipe! If you don't know, don't speculate, it only hurts the sport. Richie is spot on per usual. He is one lucky bastard to be able to try anything... For cam and intake find the driveability characteristics you can live with. Then add boost to reach desired power levels. Port work and better flowing intake (larger throttle bodies, porting, and so on. You can we the same power with the same cam and intake, just at lower boost levels due to increase in volumetric efficiency. Unfortunately you can only go so far with volumetric efficiency. This is where successful racing teams spend a fortune. They are limited in displacement, rpm, and fuel system. The edge is found in volumetric efficiency. That's not something for the weekend racer or low budget dedicated racer needs to be concerned with. A team made 557hp with a Nissan VQ37 N/A, but how many 370Z's can do that??? Big money research.

Thinking of a Truck application, I would choose the BTR Torque Cam, because when Richard tested it, it "made more power everywhere" which is what you need for a truck. You don't want to give up low end on a truck, at least, if you're going to be using it as a truck. For example heavy towing. Why I need boost is to get my travel trailer up over the I-70 passes in Colorado at a speed that won't get me rear ended. And just all around fun at lower elevations.

I'd think you'd want a cam with more rpm potential (to a certain point) so you could push peak cylinder pressure to a higher rpm. Therefore lessening the chance of hanging the rods out of the block. I'd like to see a dyno test making 1000hp with the stock cam.

I kinda like a more mild cam for the 4.8L and 5.3L! It would have nice torque curve and decent spool up for daily driving! Set it to have a nice rising boost curve with consistent 8-10 lbs of boost to pull strong to 6k rpms and slowly level off and you'd have a serious street vehicle!

It is a bit more complicated if you look in a broader perspective, an engine with compact log manifold with a small responsive turbo with high backpressure, no vvt will be pretty bad with badass overlap. Lots of residual gases in the cylinders and it gets knock sensitive, especially on pump fuel. A world away from long tube headers with good pulse separation and massive turbos. So the turbo cam bit depends alot on your engine configuration.
@gavwilldo
@gavwilldo 3 жыл бұрын
While the power curve will stay the same NA and turbo once it’s making boost, does it reflect how each cam will spool a big turbo? How important is overlap with changing timing and lsa to try keep cylinder pressure up down low to drive a big turbo while still having a fair bit of duration to try get it to make power up top. It’s awesome having someone like you who has tried a million different combinations of what works and what doesn’t and has the use of an engine dyno to show us 👍🏻
@troyparrish2387
@troyparrish2387 2 жыл бұрын
High backpressure single turbos need less overlap. Low back pressure twin turbo setups you can tighten the lsa and add some overlap. More overlap will spool faster but may reduce top end power.

I would note, if it hasn’t been noted already that super high torque at low engine speed can put lots of stress on your bottom end. Just something to keep in mind. If you are doing an NA deal, it probably won’t be an issue. But it is with decent powered booster stuff. Anyways. Have a good day.

I'd be interested to see a test where you run the same turbo with the different cams, but adjust it to hit the same peak HP, instead of the same boost, and compare the curves. Especially regarding the lower RPM's where boost is still building on the smaller cam where it may have already hit the peak boost it needs with the larger cams.
@richardholdener1727

why would you limit the bigger cam? you would have to turn the boost way down for it to make the same power as a stock cam
@tatehalpin5686

If we're turbo limited, then the boost would limit itself (within reason). But if you're running a 1000hp turbo, let's see the area under the curve to get that 1000hp on a mild setup that needs more boost than that of a higher rpm combo that can get away with less.

Obviously the shorter runners move the rpm range higher. But was curious about plenum and boost with injection. I have a VERY good friend that has a combo that's similar. He has chassis dyno proven more power with a larger plemum and it definitely made more power. At the same time the intake runners were shortened. So over always wanted to see plenum volume vs boost. So do long runners work better at low engine speed because the wavelength of the incoming charge is longer? If so is there a way to calculate optimum runner length for a constant speed engine or an engine that will be held at a constant speed while under power? Thinking about that turbo tractor build I'm planning and since it is currently an updraft I was planning on making my own intake and exhaust (plus gives me practice with the TIG so win win) but would like to know how to optimize the runner length without a dyno if that is possible.

You have to admit, the short runner intake and the big cam in that 6.0 makes a really flat torque curve. I'm not exactly into flat torque curves, but statistically, it's impressive. With a +- 10% spread, that 6.0 is flat from 3700 to 7200. -- On that application, the stock truck intake is nice because it's all one piece. No chance at a vacuum leak. -- The FAST is impressive. The fabricated intake doesn't hit 550hp until 6300 RPM. The FAST was there from 5500, and kept beating it until 7000. The LSXRt is super flat from an operating range perspective. +- ~6% from 4000 to 6300. Within 10% of peak power from 5200 to rev limiter. That intake, that cam, on a tall-deck stroker motor with a similar cylinder head would be killer from 6500 and down.

Hey Richard! I have an idea for a video. I really love the new trend of dressing the LS motors up like a traditional small block. But my question is this. How much power does that cost you to look cool like that? Could you do some A/B testing on a few different combinations? Test something like a 6.0 or a 5.3, with a typical warm street cam, and test different intake configurations. Start with a standard factory manifold. Then try a dual plane with a throttle body style injection set up, and try the exact same manifold, and do the fuel rails and either the conversions to put a stock style throttle body in place of the carb, or the 4bbl throttle body that is air only. Is there a cost to look cool!?!? I wanna see!

That assumes your cylinder head fits the application. If 10,000 RPM is your desired RPM ceiling, you're going to have complications. If 5800 RPM is your target RPM, and you allow over-rev to 6600, then you have flexibility.
