Am I Too Harsh on Media? It's a question I oftentimes ask myself for various reasons, so today I wanna discuss the topic once and for all, how I got into content creation, how that evolved to where I'm at today, and why I look and talk about things the way I do.

@@yololthepikminenjoyer I think all you only had to say was the last part of your comment, because usually the people who are most toxic think their opinion is superior. The reason I can get so toxic over people "not liking what I like" is more to do with the fact that they think what they're saying is objective and then they say the most stupid, brain dead, and easily disprovable points in order to back themselves up. And when the same points about why something is good or bad is said so much that you wonder if people actually had that opinion of if they got it from a youtuber and ran with it. Like people talking bad about a video game they never played as if they played it.

I don't exactly think Mark is being "too harsh", more that there are a lot of cases when he could explain himself a bit more. LS Mark kinda hit on the tragedy of youtube/the internet, negative generates buzz which generates clicks. Many content creators lament the fact they always hear the "you're negative and hate everything", while all the positive videos sit at half the view counts of every negative video. This is most telling with people who make top/bottom videos of the years, with the negative videos always being like double the views across any channel size.

A lot of people like being the victim and getting hated on and feeling like everyone is out to get them. It’s in every group. Almost all internet groups are cults that hate on the other side so they love videos that are negative so they can look like they’re above that. This video has caused me to notice how cautionary I am online. I have a lot of unpopular opinions on various pieces of media, and I love talking about them. Being frequently in Twitter arguments has lead me to being constantly afraid of being misinterpreted. I'm always afraid of getting bashed for things I say. I say "imo" and "I believe" way more than I should. And I feel the need to clarify that I'm not trying to discredit what anyone else says. But it's tiring! It's so, so tiring! I don't want to have to tell people over and over that what I'm saying is just my own viewpoint. And now that I've realized how much I hate it, I think I'm gonna let loose a little bit. From now on I'm gonna just state my ideas without any extra fluff. Because I just wanna talk about what I'm passionate about. That's what I like doing.

One of my favorite videos on the platform is IHE’s SFTW on Who Killed Captain Alex. It was and still is incredible to see a harsh critic fall in love with something so ridiculous. That’s one of the best things about being a critic: When you like or dislike something about a piece of media, that makes subsequent reviews of media that much more interesting. It furthers the character of the reviewer and can also allow their audience to understand what they like and what they don’t. Because, sometimes, just sometimes, you get to hear someone appreciate a piece of media, and have it mean far more than what you ever thought it could be.

Personally I feel that sometimes your standards for media are a bit too high for what that media is trying to accomplish (like your Sonic 2 movie review) but I don't think you go out of your way to attack any media or try to make it seem worse than you think it is. It's just that you want certain things out of the media you're consuming and if it doesn't meet those expectations you express your dislike of it, but not in a way that feels like it's trying to be harsh. Although I have noticed that every so often you tend to make jabs at stuff that's unrelated to the video but is brought up to help your point (like how your friend Splash Dash will bring up at Sonic Adventure 2 as an example for something in what they're reviewing and then take a pot shot at it for no reason that's unrelated to the subject matter of the video) or stuff that you admitted to not checking out because you're not interested in seeing it (like Owl House when talking about animation quality) and I feel that may be contributing to the idea that you're constantly negative to all media you see. I don't know how to best solve that outside of saying "don't do that" but besides that I don't think you're being too harsh on what you talk about.

Criticizing the artists and their piece of work is common just as long as the criticism is constructive and reasonable, and give them some advice to improve and share an honest opinion about it. Is criticism harsh? Sure, calling it "abysmal" is one thing. Berating and shaming the artist and tell them to give up what they passionate for? That's not how criticism works.

I'll give you credit on the first half since, life can really turn us into the biggest cynics who for some time didn't know what direction they want to go to(Like myself as of now). Maybe the attraction to more negativity than positivity is mostly due to our lives bringing us down so much that we feel "Why bother? Because even that would make us feel more upset that everybody else is happy,, and we're not." And we take enjoyment out of bringing pain and misery on something to remind that our lives could be a whole lot worse. Despite we're doing the opposite. My problem is that even though the best thing to do is just avoid negative stuff or just stop using the internet, but even then you can't get those thoughts out of your head, so much to the point that you can't even enjoy them the same thing again without the people that drive you crazy. 12:48- 34:01 Though the problems that most people have is basically what I keep saying in the comments(Again, I admit I fall victim on this myself) basically people just want to hear what they want to hear and don't care if they're being inconsiderate. As well as paranoia over the influence of that opinion when it's treated like a fact, like bad faith media criticism that many KZfaqrs used to have in that mindset in reviewing. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mZOqqrpp36yon2Q.html Or people just getting tired of hearing the same things said over and over again to the point of redundancy. To the point where they don't even want to look at the stuff they've once loved anymore. Along with most people come for escapism on KZfaq, and sure we can give a pass on some stuff being bashed, but when it's get to personal levels that's where we get upset. Especially when we consider a content creator as a personal friend and it felt like act of betrayal.

It’s so rare to see a content creator present more nuanced discussions on media and so I appreciate your content a lot! It’s this kind of stuff that really helps media evolve over time and also helps expand the discussion on the quality of media which is a great thing and not negative in the slightest. @cjbrooks6153 4 ай бұрын
LS Mark, I don't frequently comment on KZfaq, and I'm unsure as to how active you are at reviewing comments on older videos, but I have found your channel entertaining for reasons your common fan base may overlook. I have never been particularly interested in animation, but I have always found the critical (by that I merely mean in depth) analysis of media to be entertaining. Like you describe yourself, I was also one of those kids that really enjoyed English class, and I can see your correlation between that and our relatively shared interest. As previously mentioned, I have never had an intense fascination with animation, and even as a kid I looked down on media more geared towards children. I have always felt as though animation was a less capable platform to tell a convincing narrative, and have generally stayed away from it. I found your channel from your review of F is for family, a show that I tried due to its connection to Bill burr, but fell in love with because of its gritty sense of reality. It felt like a truly adult cartoon, where the narrative was able to fully stretch its wings, and not be bogged down by trying to "make funny" all its harsher topics. I found your review to be very fair, but even more so, I simply appreciated the amount of care put into the video. I appreciated your level of care, and it's was clear that your videos were made simply out of your own intrest. I also appreciate how articulate you are, you don't dumb down your speech, and I feels as though that makes you more of an authority on this topic, for those who want a deeper dive into the memories of their childhood. At my age it feels immature to be vested in something like SpongeBob, but the way you are portrayed in your videos allows your content to reach a more mature audience, while also referring to things that bring up nostalgic memories that makes your content "feel good" to watch. I agree with your assessment that being harsh, or excessively critical is not always a bad thing, which is why I felt warranted to write this comment. I've watched most of your more mainstream uploads now, and am finally getting to this one. I wanted to acknowledge that although I appreciate how receptive you are to your community, at the same time, I would fear that you would become to blinded by a few criticism of your content, and try to change it in a way that invalidates other opinions. Me personally, I like your satirical nature, that fact that you will call something garbage if that's what it is, and that you'll also call something good if that's what it is. Like you summed up well enough, I'm not watching your content to see if I like something, I'm watching your content because I find it interesting to hear someone else's genuine perspective of the matter. You've positively reviewed things that I remember hating, and you've negatively reviewed things that I enjoy, but it doesn't detract from you channel in my mind because you always create sound arguments. The fact that your channel is so personally, I believe has a great affect on its success. I'm not watching LS mark to tell me how I feel about a peice of media, I watch your channel to see how another critically thinking person perceived something, and it offers a new appreciation for that thing. To sum up this comment, I think your channel relies on you giving your honest opinion on the subjects you cover, and I think if you are too concerned with pleasing everyone, you will lose that personal touch. If I had any sort of advice for you, it would be to continue taking advice and criticism, but maintain "what Mark believes" as the cornerstone of your channels identity. Allow yourself to receive backlash, and recognize it not as an attack on you, but instead just another person voicing their opinion, same as you (even if they are less elegant and understanding with their criticism)

This video was genuinely wholesome. I was watching this video by Jarvis Johnson where he talked about Bright Side or something, and at the end he brung up this thing called "negativity bias" something Mark touches up on in this very video, where people gravitate towards more negative media and respond to that instead of enjoying what they enjoy and like, because it gives us a reason to redirect our anger on certain things (plus it just also feels good to be mad sometimes). Speaking of the Frontiers Story Trailer, btw, I loved that thing, and it's fine if you don't. I can't wait for Sonic Frontiers and I really wanna play it, and it's okay if you don't. I like Sonic Forces, and it's okay if you don't. I like how Mark brought this thing, cause I wanna talk about VERY briefly. If that trailer was titled LITERALLY anything else other than a story trailer, it would have had less of a negative impact. Just sayin' my opinion. Anyway, I love this video. I like when Mark just rambles on about things that are inconvenient in the long run. It makes the situation more human, and gives us a reason to post the stuff we do. Anyways, Mark, if people hate you or the things you make, here's my opinion on the matter. People will feed into your negative stuff more because people gravitate towards more negative content. Because, sometimes, we like to be mad. Anyways, because it was in this video, I just wanna say Parapa the Rappa is perfect.

Too many people don't know _how_ to consume criticism, and it's honestly one of the most frustrating things to deal with as a creator. Sure you can just not "read the comments" or whatever, but I think refusing to engage can breed a different kind of toxicity. Even when there is some positivity in a video, it seems like certain people will still latch on to the negative comments even harder than they latch on to their favorite things as a core part of their identity. It can be hard to not let it get to you. Death by a thousand cuts is real.

I've never thought you were too harsh on media. In fact, I became a fan of you because you were so moderate and reasonable, even when talking about stuff you could've easily have just shit on and called it a day. Honestly was refreshing, hearing a voice on KZfaq that wasn't afraid to admit he liked the first Fred movie, or Adam Sandler's work, or even the first Alvin and the Chipmunks, you even gave a movie as reviled as that a fair shake. Especially for the time, it was refreshing. I don't believe a lot of critics are being genuine when they discuss movies. They come off as snobby or pretentious rather than someone with something to say, and I don't usually believe them when they say "you can like this if I don't." Most follow that statement up with stuff that explicitly belittles or calls people dumb for enjoying something And I feel you've done a good job of steering clear from that. Like, I'd be the first to say I'm no fan of most of the stuff you discuss, but I don't give a shit if I don't even personally care for any of it, because hearing your unique perspective and honestly pleasant commentary on the subject material is a welcome voice to be heard. Think the whole oxymoron with this thing is that people care too much about these sorts of "review channels." Which is an awful thing to say, like why wouldn't you want someone to care about your content? But that ends up backfiring when it comes to criticism or commentary, like if a youtuber went on and said the opposite of something you think. Whether you like the youtuber or not. It's GOING to upset you, because you CARE about that opinion or thing your opposed to. Engaging in commentary and review content puts you in a bubble that you care about too much cause ultimately, who gives a shit? Just cause Derrick Mcmile of the Something reviews channel said Strawberries 2 was a bad movie doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. And the same goes if you hate something too. Just cause someone else likes that thing doesn't mean you're wrong it just means you didn't enjoy it. We're at a stigma for some reason where we HAVE to convince people we're right about a topic. I'm frankly sick of it, just leave me in my little bubble to like or dislike something lol. Same thing goes with people assuming just cause you said you didn't like a thing you're trying to maliciously sway someone to your side. Guess my point here is that's the impression people get with "review content". Especially PASSIONATE review content, you're "reviewing" something, which means you should be as unbias as possible, but it's a youtube channel, if you were to do that nobody would give a shit. This isn't rotten tomatoes or letterbox its an entertainment platform. Think what I'm trying to say is lay off yourself a bit, cause you're right there is no real winning here. Talk about your silly cartoons and just have fun with it, cause at the end of the day some people care way more than you do and that's really on them.

Personally, I feel that it’s very important for a reviewer to do a mix of both positive and negative reviews. For me personally I tend to lean too much into being overly positive, and I think a lot of that comes from me doing a “thing of the week” type segment for my schools news show. The most important thing to a review (positive and negative) is to keep a balanced tone to try and stay somewhat more objective (even though there’s always going to be a bit of subjectivity).

I don't know exactly how to conceive this, maybe as advice or just pointing it out, but I always love it when someone can use negative criticism for the sake of humor. Making a lot of jokes around a product's flaws is not only fun to me, but it's much easier to do because there is so much to learn from it. Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation is probably the only example I can come up with where someone's negativity wasn't constantly getting backlash, but instead people craved MORE of it because they like it when he can show off his misery in not liking something in such an exaggerated manner. The real cause of people taking negative criticism so seriously is when the creator himself treats it seriously. That last sentence was not meant to be directed at you specifically, Mark. I'm just saying the worst cases when that happens is when someone makes it sound too much like how they are in real life instead of using a characterized persona.

Good stuff! I definitely share in both this retrospect and frustration at times, but for what it's worth I've thought for the most part that you articulate yourself well and that people overly dogpile you at times. I may not agree with literally every word you say, but that's what discussion is! KZfaq would be a terribly boring place if everyone was always saying the same thing as each other, and I'm glad you're just saying what you think.

The sheer amount of willpower and patience to sit through every episode of family guy makes you far more qualified to complain about it than any other nerd on this site. When you have a hot take about something, you usually at least have a decent explanation for your views, and that's a hell of a lot more than 99% of the channels I used to watch. When you have a criticism its usually about an actual issue in the film and not just a random nonproblem that you milk for a "joke", I appreciate that. I grew up watching channel awesome, and similar old "review" shows from the early youtube days, and compared to that, you are actually extremely fair and open to change in media. Maybe things are different now, idk because im out of the loop from the kids, but back in 2016 I quit most review shows that i had been watching for years. Because I realized they were affecting my perception of media, and making me toxically hyper critical, and nitpicky about non issues. This is one of the reason I like your content so much, you remind me of the "good old days" watching nostalgia critic, but you aren't a whiney bitch like he was. You offer fair and mostly balanced, and rational opinions, about media you both enjoy and dislike. and you don't go on long tirade's about how some random kids movie from 30 years ago didn't live up to the rigorous standards of a film school dropout. Simply put I feel like I could watch a movie or show with you and not hate the experience, I cant say that about any of the other cartoon review channels that I know of.

Mark this is your best video. The only thing you are being harsh to is yourself. Keep doing what you do bro.

I'm a relatively new viewer and thought people complain about you just because you dare to be even slightly negative, but now as you described your channels history I understand why people might now associate you with overwhelming negativity. Your new content feels very reasonable to me, you aren't being negative, you come off as someone who just wants to review things honestly, and I like it.

11:00 As one of the few who got to experience their last highschool year during covid i'll always remember playing worms during english class with the zoom class minimized on the top right corner stealing one or two glances at my teacher's one thousand yard stare just sending us the ppt + a essay like sidequest and have the whole class hearing a sudden "oof" from one of the worms quickly muting myself

i've always liked your videos, even a lot of the older ones, it's weird that that many people talk about how negative you are, because it never really seemed that way to me.

There's nothing wrong with being "too harsh" on media. We all have different tastes and if you're really harsh that's fine, you do you. I only really have a problem with it if critics are so harsh that they're obviously lying about what they think to suit some kind of agenda or whatever.

Being Critical or having a different opinion from everyone else is perfectly fine as long as you’re truly honest and criticism is valid. Sometimes seeing opinions that stray away from the majority is fun because it allows us to see a product through a completely different pair of eyes. Stay strong Mark and continue to stand out from the crowd
