I’ve always hated trying to estimate for the long tail cast on. This was a great tutorial for starting a sweater! Thank you so much. I was lucky that the main color yarn was a skein and not a twisted hank.

The splice method is perfect for two colour cast on, for brioche etc. There's no estimation, the yarn doesn't need to be cut, and both colours are ready at the beginning of your row. It's so satisfying.

The "width" of the fabric for yarn tail estimation would be the same as if you were casting on for that number of sts in stockinette. You're creating the same amount of fabric, it's just that ribbing pulls in and is more three dimensional when it's relaxed. So if you're casting on 100 sts with worsted weight yarn, and you'd get 5 sts/in in stockinette if you were using that yarn and those needles, then treat the CO edge as if it were going to be 20'' wide.

I’m trying to do a blanket which will be 100 cast on . Based on this video and the expected finished size I have my long tail 10 feet. Is that crazy? The blanket is only supposed to be 38 inches by 33 using 36 circulars

As stated in the video, you need 3x the width of the item, so it's not unreasonable to need 10 feet of tail for something that will be more than 3 feet wide, however, given you are only casting on 100 sts, it sounds like you're using a super bulky yarn, which may actually need *more* than 3x the amount. I would suggest using the method that does not require estimating the tail at all (using both ends of the ball, or one end from each of two balls).
