Luca Fantacci: The political economy of tokenized money
in conversation with Daniel H. Neilson
Luca Fantacci is Research Unit Director at Bocconi University, Milan where he teaches economic history and history of economic thought. His research focuses on financial crises, monetary reform, complementary and digital currencies, and the work of John Maynard Keynes. He is the co-editor of Money and Calculation (Palgrave 2010) and the author, with Massimo Amato, of The End of Finance (Polity 2011), Saving the Market from Capitalism (Polity 2014), and A Fistful of Bitcoin (Bocconi UP 2020). Together with Amato, he has acted as consultant to public administrations for the development of innovative exchange and payment solutions, designing, in particular, a local currency for the City of Nantes in France, a clearing system for Lombardy Region in Italy, and a complementary currency for bankruptcy procedures for the Italian Ministry of Justice. Inspired by Keynes’s ideas, Fantacci is working on clearing schemes, both at European and at local level, aimed at facilitating what today appears to be systemically obstructed: the payment of debts and the circulation of money.
Daniel H. Neilson is Associate Professor at Bard College at Simon’s Rock. Daniel H. Neilson is a monetary economist, specializing in the structure of the monetary and financial system. He is the author of Minsky, a reading of the works of the theorist of financial crisis. He also writes Soon Parted, a newsletter about central banking, monetary theory and fintech. Dan teaches economics classes that touch on money and banking, debt, international finance, China’s financial system, economic transition, and the construction of authority. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University and a B.A. in mathematics and music from Bard College at Simon's Rock.
This talk was part of the 4th Annual Money View Symposium, hosted by YSI on 3-5 February, 2024. The Symposium showcased the work of scholars and practitioners that make use of the money view, ranging from economists to lawyers, politicians and social scientists at large.
