Luca Guadagnino and Timothée Chalamet Reflect on Their Collaborations

Before writer-director Luca Guadagnino and a young Timothée Chalamet ever met and decided to work together, the former had already earned accolades for films like 'I Am Love' and 'A Bigger Splash,' and the latter was building an impressive resume that included movies by Christopher Nolan ('Interstellar') and Jason Reitman ('Men, Women & Children'). But it was their collaboration on 2017's 'Call Me by Your Name' that not only served as their introduction to a wider moviegoing audience and garnered sweeping critical acclaim, but also birthed a fruitful friendship that would inspire them to work together again. That creative partnership would go on to produce 'Bones and All,' a decidedly darker coming-of-age romance directed by Guadagnino about a young woman (Taylor Russell) with cannibalistic impulses who embarks on a journey to find her mother and falls for a young man (Chalamet) with an equally unusual appetite. Ahead of the film's release, Guadagnino and Chalamet sat down with Rotten Tomatoes to reflect on their partnership, beginning with the first time they became aware of - and became fans of - each other's work. They talk about why they work together so well, how easy it was to bring Russell into the fold, what moments have been the most memorable for them, and more.

This movie is a masterpiece. Cannibalism is not in the center and the gore scenes are absolutely useful to the story and to speak about the desperation Lee and Maren lives. They didn't choose their condition, it's a sentence, and they are young and desperately willing to live a live and a love as normal as possible. But it simple can't be. It's all so tender and painful. I think that everyone can close their eyes if the gore scenes are too much for them, and love and enjoy all the rest of the movie. It's not an horror, with music and sound that helps fear and revulsion, it's a love story and a coming of age.

I watched it and closed my eyes during a couple of moments. I enjoyed it but i don't see it as a masterpiece. It just didn't seem to affect me that much or touch me that deeply. Maybe i'll need to give it a second watch to fully appreciate it.

Hear me out. It’s actually not too gruesome. Like there’s definitely some gore and it does get uncomfortable but oddly enough it’s not centered around the cannibalism as much as you’d think. If you know Luca’s work & Tim’s work then trust the process! It still has all of the elements they’re known for and you won’t be disappointed !! Ultimately, it is a coming of age love story. And them being cannibals is such a clever metaphor. When you think of all of the things young ppl feel isolated and ostracized for..whether it be drug addiction, surviving abuse, eating disorders, poverty, etc all of the things that make teens/Young adults feel unworthy and ashamed..but as a society we’ve become desensitized by our mundane trials and they just don’t ruffle the feathers as deeply as say..cannibalism? As outlandish as the thought of that concept is...that’s how deep some young ones feel about their situations, like they’re at the point of no return and they’ve been pushed aside and abandoned for it and they’re left dealing with the guilt of something they can’t even fully understand all the while feeling alone. That’s just my take on it. I Deff recommend & I’ll prob read the book now bc books are always better in my opinion 😆

So the film is about how we should become more accepting of cannibalism as a society?????
@kellyzhou9971

@@hi-ve1cw no, cannibalism is a metaphor, it's more like being an outside and finding your person who understands and accepts you. Please don't take it literally.

The book actually isn’t that great. The concept is brilliant but the execution, not so much. That being said there are elements in the book that were changed for the film which I would have liked to see. For anyone who hasn’t read the book, I wouldn’t recommend reading it before seeing the film. I wish I hadn’t.

It feels so good to hear how fondly and nostalgically Timmy still talks about CMBYN and the place where it was filmed and how much that memory is still part of his life. I only saw the movie, but I have carried the feeling in my heart ever since. What can He, who has experienced all this, feel then? I wonder if this movie will have such a strong effect on me. Love them both! :)

I went to a screening for it over the weekend and people walked out. I spoke to one lady and her bf after who stayed the whole time and she was absolutely disgusted and said she hated it so much! I actually Loved it…it’s all about perception. This is definitely not a film for everyone one. But it was very good and very Luca!

i honestly don't understand when people say they throw up or fainted or what else because of this movie. it's definitely not the case, it has a few scenes but even those are not that graphic, you can look away for a couple of seconds and that's it. let's not exaggerate, it's not some kind of Exorcist or a zombie movie. it's not even a horror movie.

Timothee seems to have calmed down a lot in these recent interviews. Not half as fidgety and awkward as usual. Could depend on who he's with i suppose but maybe he's just getting more comfortable with himself. A bit like Kristen Stewart

i almost had to leave the cinema in the first 3rd of bones and all because of the visuals and the sounds, luckily i was at the end of the row furthest away from the aisle and i felt bad about disturbing other people so i stayed, and i’m so so glad i did because the more i watched the more i saw the characters rather than the cannibalism and the film is so so interesting to dive into and analyse the characters and the staging and the shots, it’s a brilliant film, it just takes a bit of effort to see past the repulsion you get from it at first

I find that the cannibalism describes a feeling that people get like when you see a dog and you wanna squeeze it to death but cutely or you see a really cute baby and you feel like biting it but sweetly 🤣😅I hope I'm making sense I don't think there's anything fundamentally important about the act itself for the plot but it says something bigger about individualism, self expression and emotional relief and our perceptions thereof of each other in those moments of vulnerability and emotional relief There are some behaviors we ourselves I think, keep in our private spaces that the thought that someone else out there does that is both comforting and exposing, hence when they could smell each other it created a comfort and a fear And when they found out that someone was training to get to "bones and all" it irked them because this form of expression is part of their identity and its not a play or gimmick

I watched it but was kinda disappointed. I feel like it could've been so much more. The ending was also kinda weird and corny. I think it was supposed to be moving and romantic but it just made me want to laugh at the absurdity of it all. The only good thing about the movie was the acting. Everyone did their parts really well.
