The song is Moonlight Sonata, specifically the first movement. It is one of if not the most famous piece of piano music of all time. And you are right, it is by Beethoven.

Amazing that you said this. Out of sheer boredom, I was listening to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer here on KZfaq, and I ran across this song. I thought to myself that I'd rather hear something that's true instead of the Christmas fairytale song about a reindeer. I've pulled my head out of the sand, and you're right, it's not always a positive, upbeat scene. Seems to be getting darker by the minute...
