This is the Tenor's aria "Nessun Dorma" from the opera Turandot written by Puccini. The opera revolves around Calaf, the tenor, who falls madly in love with the beautiful yet dismissive princess Turandot who poses 3 riddles impossible to solve to every man who asks for her hand in marriage. Every man who fails to solve them is beheaded. Calaf however manages to solve them. The princess is dismayed so Calaf gives her a chance to get out of their engagement: he gives her 24 hours to find out his name which proves to be impossible because he is, if I remember it correctly, a prince in disguise coming from a different kingdom. As the sunlight fades, Calaf sings this aria "Nessun Dorma" or "No one shall sleep". He sings to his "pure principessa" the pure princess and asks her to "guard le stelle Che tremano d'amore e di esparanza" meaning "look at the stars that tremble with love and hope" He sings "Ma il mio mistero e chiuso in me, il nome mio Nessun sapra" "my secret is locked within me, no one knows my name" until " Tua bocca lo diro" "your (the princess') lips say it" when "la luce Splendera" "the light is going to shine" meaning when the new day arrives because then the time will be up. I've forgotten what the choir sings, something about death, if she, against all odds, finds out his name in time and I don't remember the meaning of the next words but it is something about silence. He closes with the powerful plea "dilegua notte, tramontate stelle", "Night, begone! Stars, tremble!" "al alba vincero, vincero, vincero!" which means "as dawn will triumph."

I know nothing at all about singing, but have read different opinions about Pavarotti - at one extreme, he was about the only singer of the 21st century who could sing 'properly', at the other, he was 'the great illusionist' - immaculate technique, but a small voice, failed in big roles, relied on amplification (he's using microphones here, for example). Who's right?
@dina113east
@dina113east 4 жыл бұрын
@@hermoglyph2255 Did you listen to this? A perfect voice for a tenor. Especially a Puccini opera. He is using a microphone because this is a concert. When performing the opera itself, microphones are not used and the voice has to carry throughout the opera house. He brought opera back to the masses and opera had a resurgence because of him. People who never listened to opera became interested in opera because of him. He sang in the 20th Century. He died early in this 21st Century.

@Jack_Simpson 4 жыл бұрын
Certainly among the greatest voices to ever exist and absolutely a generational talent, but he does have the advantage of being in his prime during the age of digital recordings. Mario Lanza, for example died before 1960 so there are no crystal clear recordings of him despite him being up there with Pavarotti. When Pavarotti is said to have a little voice, it is compared to other operatic tenors who are in his league. Unfortunately generally the most beautiful(lyric) voices, are not the loudest(dramatic). If you want to more about this, look up vocal fachs. If you want to hear a true dramatic tenor, listen to Franco Corelli.

It’s a declaration of victory. One of the greatest in opera. The Princess Turnadot vows to marry no one unless they answer 3 riddles- if they fail they die. Calaf ( an anonymous prince played by Pavarotti ) answers the riddles, and the Princess is furious. He tells her if she can tell him his true name before sunrise he will release her and he will die at her hand. She demands the kingdom to find out his name or they all die. Nessun Dorma means “No Sleep”. Calaf is singing of dismissing the stars., and welcoming the dawn because in the end he will win! The last three verses where he hits that note he is literally saying “I will win!!” “I will win!!” “I will WIN!!!” Pavarotti is the gold standard for this piece. I cry every time I hear it!

Wow, how can someone reach adulthood and not know that Puccini wrote opera, and his music is magnificent, and that Pavarotti raises it from magnificent to sublime? What is wrong with an education system that fails to share this wonderful music with every student. There are good singers, then there are great singers, and then, there is only Pavarotti, the Maestro.

Do you know what's up with this recording? It's going to sound like I'm going for excruciating detail, but I played timpany through college and their timpanist can't seem to roll at the end with one of the simplest notes to do it with. You can hear a thud-thud-thud rapidly, but you should just hear the note holding. IDK, I always end up hearing shit like that and it drives me crazy. That's a professional timpanist.
