This is not a song, this is the aria Nessun dorma (from Italian - "Let no one sleep") - an aria from the last act of the opera "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini, one of the most famous and difficult to perform arias of the tenor repertoire)

To put It simple: Aria in operas is a piece where the “action” is suspended and public can hear and access the inner thoughts of the character.

Absolutely correct except for it being “one of the most difficult to perform.” It contains only one high ‘C’ which is the final note. Conversely, ‘Pour mon âme,’ from Donizetti’s La fille du régiment, contains a whopping 9 high ‘C’s’.

Those last couple of notes -- Pavarotti is singing the words "vincero," which means "I will win." That is why he has just a look of victory on his face. It's not just that he "nailed it" (which, of course, he DOES), it's that he's singing "I will win!"

By 1994 He was considered way past his prime like 15 years past. One of the reasons that made this legendary was that fact.. He owned that aria and he was his signature piece! This is him saying nope I still have it and I'll sing till I die. He almost literally did this as he last sung this in 2006 and he died in 2007 from pancreatic cancer. He was doing a farewell tour and he had to have neck surgery to fix some vertebrae he had problems.

Glad to see you enjoyed it. What you should realize is that Pavarotti was the single greatest tenor of all time, equal to Enrico Caruso. There was nothing in this performance that was difficult for him and there was no question by anyone that he was going to kill this performance. He was also surrounded by one of the most prolific orchestras at that time.
@davidgould9431
@davidgould9431 10 ай бұрын
You can't say "single greatest tenor of all time" and "equal to Enrico Caruso" because that means there were two "single greatest" tenors "of all time". We simply don't know what tenors before the recording era were like, so you can't say they were worse than recorded tenors. Pavarotti had a nice voice but never challenged himself musically to attempt anything outside a very limited Italian opera repertoire. OK, Verdi's Requiem is in Latin (and there'e a horrible recording of "Minuit, Chretiens" in French) but you get my point. I said it elsewhere here: I saw him live, and he was boring.

In my humble opinion, Pavarotti was the greatest of all time. I've heard a lot of Caruso and he was great, but there is a certain quality to Pavarotti's voice that out shines Caruso, and any other tenor I've heard. It is passion, it is power, it is many thing all in one. He can't be topped. I like them all, but I LOVE Pavarotti!

This is from Puccini's Opera. It's the story of a princess who refuses to be married. To discourage men pursuing her she states that anyone wanting her must answer 3 riddles, but anyone that tries and fails is beheaded. She kills many many men until Pavarotti's character comes along. He's loved her for very long and he successfully answers the riddles anonymously. She's absolutely furious and announces that no one is allowed to sleep that night until he is found and brought to her so that she could kill him. This song is him somewhat mocking her "Nesun Dorma" = "none shall sleep" and announcing that he will win. The last two lines that were very powerful actually mean "I will win". Gorgeous opera and breathtaking song.

The song is literally a matter of Life & Death. At dawn the singer faces a challenge to try to win the hand of a princess. If he fails, he will be executed. At the. end of the song he is singing "I will win. I will win!" He is risking it all for Love, and you can see it in Pavarotti's face as he sings those words of Hope. Loved this one, you two! Hi, I'm Italian, you need to know the story that this work tells to fully appreciate it, and the deeper meaning that history teaches, the legend tells of Princess Turandot, daughter of the Chinese emperor, and of Prince Calaf who is faced with enigmas , if he solves these enigmas he will be able to marry her otherwise he will die, in the song he expresses the hope of winning the test and of being able to kiss her and have her as his wife, the deepest meaning is that in general even when something seems impossible to achieve one must never lose sight of soul, it is a hymn to courage and determination and to believing in one's abilities, the song repeats "no sleep" as when it happens to all of us not to sleep because we know that the next day at dawn we will have to face an important test , and in fact the song ends with him shouting "at dawn I will win"

You must listen that beautiful aria sung by the young Pavarotti in 1961. Search exactly "Puccini: La Bohème, SC 67, Act 1 - Che gelida manina" The first two entries found on the Luciano Pavarotti channel are from the same recording. Exquisite performance of that wonderful music, an abstract of La Bohème by Puccini!

Vincero! (I will win!). This is a tenor aria from the final act of Turandot by Puccini in the early 1900's. The character singing is Calaf, the unknown prince, who had fallen in love with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. Any man who wants to wed her must answer three riddles. If he get's them wrong he'll be beheaded. Nessun Dorma means "Let no one sleep". Opera is extremely difficult to sing, and Luciano Pavarotti was one of the very greatest. That last passage took every scrap of breath he had to sing it that way. Opera singers don't use microphones normally, they have to project without them. The shape and articulation of the mouth are critical as is absolute breath control. An iteration of this aria by Rob Lundquist and Austin Brown of Home Free is one you might want to react to. Austin wanted to show off "opera Rob". Rob wouldn't do it unless Austin would sing with him so they made a duet of this (which no opera singer would even have thought of). It's not Pavarotti, but it's really good! Rob was trained in opera which his dad wanted him to sing, and Austin has a degree in Musical Theatre. Rob gave the CD to his dad who reportedly cried.

You hit the nail on the head with that comment!! Luciano did feel the weight of that performance. You had the other two mega tenors, José Carerras and Placido Domingo bearing down on him for the crown. Domingo was closest. This was THE signature passage song of Pavarotti. The last words in English were I will win, I will win and Luciano did indeed win!!!!!!

Pavarotti, this song. and opera in general was given a great boost and brought into the public mainstream after the BBC in the UK used this as the theme music for their presentation of coverage of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. I think without that public exposure to millions of football fans Pavarotti would be globally far less known.

@casumarzu So what exactly was factually incorrect about the OP's message then?

@casumarzu So leaving aside that the OP did not claim the things that you are falsely attributing to him, the answer to my question then is that nothing that he said was inaccurate. Oh and the BBC does not just broadcast to the UK either.

I'm no old guy, but to me it's more amazing that people haven't heard Pavarotti, then his voice in fact

It just looked so effortless and joyful. I guess that's the hallmark of someone with immense talent and a huge work ethic to get to that level in any discipline 🙇
