Friend of mine is playing a halfling diviner/war cleric for our new campaign. His backstory is actually pretty hilarious. He was a solid divination wizard who foresaw his own demise. He turned to the gods for help and ended up being chosen by a god of war and entertainment. The thing is, he actually has to keep his god entertained or risk losing his god's favor. So, first session, he ended up riding a polar bear like a rodeo bull.

I used to have a diviner wizard in my group who when he was using his portent ability would, loudly very loudly declare "I FORSEE A ROLL!!!!!"

For some reason this reminded me of the time my brother rolled up his very first character. I'm the DM and spend a while explaining how this works, finally he rolls and I watch the whole thing to ensure he doesn't cheat... Dude rolls SIX EIGHTEEN'S! I just pause for like teen minutes before saying, "I guess you're blessed by the gods..." So that's his backstory now. He blessed by the gods to be great at everything.

id love to see a video or document on the house rules you all have

With the right spell selection and expertise on Perception and Investigation (to get 20+ passives on both at level 20) this build would be perfect for Wil Wheaton. Tons of re-rolls, focus on "Save or Suck" and Divination spells, high passives.

What about the Wild Magic sorcerers Tides of Chaos? that's a really big addition to this build.

Halfling diviner wizard is something I'm trying right now actually. It's pretty dope actually.

I'm currently doing a halfling divination wizard14, with 6 levels of eloquence bard. Very fun build.

I like the final build, but it's rough that it puts you down two stat adjustments (or feats). I'd have to look at them side-by-side, but I feel like the stronger option's Bard 6/Diviner 14 because that'll give you Counter Charm for the Bard, granting advantage on mind effecting saving throw, gets you Font of Inspiration, which is huge, and your Bardic Inspiration's at a d8. I've felt pretty meh about trading my bonus action for advantage to an ally's single attack- unless they're a super heavy hitter, it always seems like a better option to go hide.

Though I would pick the Diviner Portent class ability as great for this, there is an im-portent (see what I did there?) difference in the rules to what you described. The Portents dice have to be declared before the die is rolled "You must choose to do so before the roll" - PHB 116. That makes it a lot less powerful but a lot more in tune with the diviner theme. Also, no love for magic items? You could have included the Luck blade, Luck Stone and (new from XGtE) the Clockwork Amulet, common magic item. "This copper amulet contains tiny interlocking gears and is powered by magic from Mechanus, a plane of clockwork predictability. A creature that puts an ear to the amulet can hear faint ticking and whirring noises coming from within. When you make an attack roll while wearing the am- ulet, you can forgo rolling the d20 to get a 10 on the die. Once used. this property can’t be used again until the next dawn."

Here's an idea. You know how the DMG presents options for having Honor and/or Sanity as ability scores? The characters get a starting score in it (11), and it's used for certain kinds of games. What if we had an optional Ability called "Luck"? An ability score that tracks how much Dame Fortuna smiles on the character? There a number of options for how this could be used. All characters might gain the ability to reroll dice a certain number of times a day, equal to the Luck modifier. Races like Halfling and Classes like Diviner Wizard just give the character access to _more_ rerolls, above and beyond their normal amount. Alternatively, the Luck modifier could be added (or subtracted) from random rolls done by the DM. That is, rolls where the DM goes by some kind of table, and gives a random result. The type of thing encounters use. This may lead to either good or bad things happening to the character, since Luck is not always good. One option would be to have the Luck modifier added to crits, in place or on top of the doubled damage. I don't think this ability should be added to all kinds of rolls, but it should apply sometimes. What I'd really like is some kind of "Fate-Guided Fool" subclass, probably for either Fighter or Rogue. Leaning towards Rogue. Other classes have subclasses kind of like this, like the Wild Magic Sorcerer or the Drunken Master Monk. The character's abilities would channel the Luck stat in all things, adding it directly to their attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws in ways other class options couldn't. Or having the ability to just give himself Advantage - or cancel Disadvantage - a number of times equal to their Luck mod.

One you left-out for classes is the Fiend Pact Warlock with Dark One's Blessing (?)- not the strongest option, I'd go Diviner any day of the week, but an option nonetheless.

I'd go halfling, Mastermind rogue 4 to take the lucky feat. Lore bard 4 for halfling feat, diviner 4 for halfling feat, battlemaster 6 for two ability score increases, and have an extra 4 levels to play with, such as war cleric for the channel divinity, or divine sorcerer

Would love to see this with updated rules from Tasha's and no Bard, I just got done with a bard. :P

I like the build options and such, but i feel you guys missed the "lucky" mark, heres my luck build; halfing (obv) 6 levels wild magic sorcerer and take the lucky feat, grab 2 levels divination wizard for portent, and last a min 6 levels fiend warlock for dark ones own luck, its kinda coffee-lock'y which is strong as it is, i say min 6 fiend because from there you can take any 6 levels from any class of your choosing, be it lore bard, batlle master or more in sorcerwe or warlock

There is also the Hexblade's Armor of Hexes which allows you a 50% chance of making an attack from your cursed creature miss you as a reaction.

What I think might be cool is a recharge luck ability. Where basically the player can as a bonus action roll a d20. That result can then be saved to substitute any d20 roll as a reaction. After both the bonus action and reaction has been taken it recharges on a 6.

this build has the shell of the every skill guy also. wonder if you could combine the two...........

As the war mage I am able to increase my AC upon hits and also save throws. That has saved me more often than as a normal wizard.

Did you guys totally ignore the soul knife??? Imagine combining the dice control conferred by lucky, portent, and psionic dice of the soul knife. You never fail any skill checks. Ever

I currently play as follower of a god of luck, but went a different route. The character is currently level 9. I used the 7th level skill monkey build, (half-elf, Rogue 1, Ranger 1, knowledge cleric 1, lore bard 4, sage, skilled feat) which makes you proficient in everything, and expert in six skills. I then took two additional levels in rogue and took the mastermind sub-type, for the reasons stated in the video. Next level going to go rogue and take the lucky feat. The character has access to all the low level cleric spells like bless, bane and guidance. I play the character so they treat everything they are expert in like a proficiency, and the additional proficiency bonus they get for everything else is just a byproduct of their innate luckiness. The character was also given a re-skinned version of the lucky cat stone magic item, so gets an additional +1 to all the skills as well.

Clerics should have more dice manipulation with a Luck/Fate Domain. Along with Bless/Bane, there should be other abilities, too. Apply Vulnerability or Resistance to an attack with Channel Divinity, maybe. Something. But sticking Fate and Luck into Trickery is crap.

Halfling, Wild mage - Sorcerer with the [Lucky] feat and [Abundance of Luck] halfling feat. Can use the throes of Tides of Chaos for free advantage and rerolls galore. Might play this next time i play....now where to get a luck blade... p.s. It's my B-Day!!!!

You forgot dark one's own luck, and you could have upped to lvl 4 in rogue and bard to get lucky and one of the halfling features, and at that point going to 5th level bard to get back inspiration on a short is worth it. Good video, useful help for building my lucky character

The Oath of Vengeance paladin in the game I run just discovered Bane last session. The intended boss monster failed its save, and I think it hit maybe once the whole combat.

This video made me start thinking of doing a halfling wild magic sorcerer but in the end I think wild magic shouldn't be tamed by luck. Chaos is more fun!

ive had a player who unless told otherwise would ALWAYS play human variant just to get the lucky feat because he always played characters who would go for these overly complex or risky tactics just because he thought i was fun to do

I think I would rather have a recharge on my bardic inspiration abilities that I can use multiple times a day, then one more portant die. I understand how amazingly game-changing important can be, but I think you might get more overall mileage from a quick recharge of your bardic inspiration
