Hey drummers, this time out we're trying out the Ludwig Classic Maple 3-piece shell pack with 22" kick drum. Classic Maple shells are constructed of 7-ply maple for its high sensitivity, wide tuning range, and fast attack. They are molded with Ludwig's Radio Frequency Shell Technology (RFST). This process utilizes a unique bonding system and adhesive to ensure all of the plies are evenly cured through the whole surface of the shells. And the 45-degree bearing edges are hand sanded for a flawless, flat surface that enhances your shell's sustain and harmonic content.

Great kit. Have played them all on and off, and still finding myself coming back to Ludwig. The feel, vibe, sound, quality, all good. Toured many a-time with Luds and never let me down.

Damn Nick you played Ringo Starr's classic and iconic rhythm perfectly in the beginning and also included dynamics as well. You are extremely clever in your playing and i'm really glad i came across this channel. Looks like you've just earned yourself yet another subscriber!!!!!!!

The perfect classic drum set....4 piece...that’s all the greats needed for years. There’s no point having a million drums and cymbals, where you can’t even see the drummer.

I've always loved the sound quality of those Ludwig drums, hopefully when ever I'm ready to upgrade I will get my hands one one of those beauties. I must admit that I am a fan of your drumming Nick, you're an awesome drummer my man I love all your videos thank you

I had a Ludwig set like Ringo's in high school. It would be called the the Legacy Maple now. The shells were made much differently than now.

Ringo mainly had his rack tom attached to the bass drum, not to the cymbal stand. He used a tom stand sometimes , when he used two rack toms . Great demonstration and great drums.

I have the same kit in Silver Sparkle with a 24" bass drum. Added a second 18" floor tom and all Evans heads. I bought them in 2015 and I love them. Recording, gigging they are great.

What size is the rack tom? If you say 14X10 then it looks like you're going for a Bonham feel.

drumcatfairy77 Strata and Oyster Pearl are two very different finishes, however, i see what you mean, because i'm familiar with Pearl's version of Strata, and they can be similar looking..

You are the first drummer I see that he is commissioned to show drums and being a top musician you really shows the instrument and its characteristics and does not show yourself. You are selling the product, no selling yourself. Thank you. It's boring to see drummers who sell themselves in each video and do not let appreciate the instrument, and those abound, are the vast majority. Why you don't have teaching videos?

Just picked up a vintage b/o badge Ludwig in black cortex from 1977. All 6 ply maple shells..THE classic rock sound...Accept no other substitutes, unless of course, it's another Ludwig.... ;)

Playing a 6-ply Ludwig kit made sell my Tamas. I just bought a new Ludwig Classic Maple kit and I love it. It's bit louder than the 6-ply drums, maybe just a tad more resonance. The kick is phenomenal. They sound similar to me. The tones are warm and fat from each kit. I prefer them over my 3-ply drums.

Nick usually has a very highly tuned snare. Ringo mainly used a wood Ludwig Jazz Festival snare, only occasionally metal. Ludwig started in 1909...the year Gene Krupa was born.

At 5:50 he wanted to say that claw hooks ARE rubber lined but they are not....LOL Good catch Nick.. Excellent review. Love to hear the Legacy maple in comparison

Ringo has continued to use Ludwig, since 1963. So many other drummers have changed, maybe due to endorsement deals.

Ringo used the legacy mahgony shell not the classic maple shell. Only the hollywood kit in 68 was a cllassic maple shell

No wonder Ringo loved Ludwig. Buddy Rich ( the greatest drummer of all time ), used Ludwig , as much as he used Slingerland.

I remember in the 60s, most drummers owned one drum set and just one snare. These days, most drummers own several of each....how times have changed.

Got my 1967 down beat black oyster drum kit but the bass drum is a club date 22” coun’t fine a catalog or a picture of it.if it’s original to the kit. I’ve had it since 1976 . Has a rail consolette .

Watch the drummer in Extreme doing his stuff at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert on a kit like this; he made it sound like it had two bass drums and a dozen toms! Depends on the drummer, of course...

Sebastian Ramirez Did you get the kit? If not, the Ludwig bass drums are killer, and I think you should base it around your personal playing style and the genre (s) of music you'll be playing most. A 24 is loud, boomy, and roomy. A 22 is precise and punchy. I have a 22 now, I play DW, and I find it leaving something to be desired. Buying a Classic Maple soon, and I'll be trying a 24! Happy hunting!

You probably already have your kit, but after playing a 14x24-in Ludwig kick for the last few years I can't see going back to a 22-in. I'm afraid to try a 26-in. Ludwig's kicks are incredible.

D'yer Maker the 24 is perfect. 26 is a lot of fun to play, especially when it’s tuned Bonham-style. Can’t exactly gig it, though. And it’s not travel-friendly.

This is why Ringo has stayed with Ludwig, since 1963. I think he used mahogany back then. How do these compare to vintage Ludwig, from a sound point of view. Modern hardware today, would be improved with technology.

I just purchased this kit and wonder why Ludwig did not use a 9x12 Tom. The 9x13 just seems like a lot of weight on the cymbal stand and the ball attachment housing is not very sturdy to hold the 9x13 current tom that comes with it.

Brilliant looking and sounding kit, but really dislike the toms being attached to the cymbal stands. I hope they come with the tom, attached to the bass drum. It gives far more flexibility.

+Roy Beckerman I bought this kit a couple of years ago and I switched from the tom mount on the bass drum to the mounts on the cymbal stands. You can maneuver the toms a lot better and I think the virgin bass drum looks better.

The tom work on the intro to "Come Together" is out of sequence. Ringo went to the floor tom before the 9x13. No doubt that this was due to Ringo being left-handed. That said, NICK ROCKS!!! Snare drum choice and tuning was spot on, but I wonder why you chose not to use the maple snare drums that are sold as companions to this kit?

+Mark M Finally another brother who noticed that. I see a lot of drummers go from rack to floor, but ringo always went floor to rack. A nice 14x5 Jazz festival snare would have gone great with that kit

I bought this kit and coupled it with a black beauty 6.5 x 14 snare. it's a great kit, but the poor hardware was a deal breaker for me. the lugs consistently came loose on the rack Tom as well as the snare. not long into my having the kid the snare throw off broke. I found that this is a common problem with the ludwig throw offs. so I upgraded to a p95 throw off (can't remember the number at this point) and about 2 weeks after installing that, very small screws in that throw off came loose. I did further research and it seems like it's a rather common complaint with ludwig drums. Super bummer because I actually really liked the kit and snare

I bought this same kit back in 2013 and have never had a problem with anything coming loose. I have 10,12,16 and 22x16 kick. Everything is solid as a rock except for the P-85 snare throw-off. It sticks sometimes but everything else is fine and I hit them pretty hard.

I've played lots of Ludwigs and other brands. Vibrations make screws back out, especially if not very tight. If it's a consistent problem put some light to medium grade silicone thread sealant on the screws
