Hey! This week we're comparing snare drums! I finally got some new heads for my slingerland snare so I figured this video would be a perfect way to break them in. Enjoy!
Which one do you like better?

I play a late 60's Slingerland Krupa and love it. The snare clamp on yours has been changed out over time. I like the thinner sound of the Slingerland, but that Ludwig sounds great, too. I'm using 16 strand Puresound Custom snares to get a little more of the shell sound. I think the thinner sound sits in a band mix better. Try Remo coated Ambassador heads if you get a chance. This was a great video on two metal shell drums that showed the variance in sound.

Slingerland is exactly what I want a snare to sound like, Ludwig sounded like a basketball in a school hall -- I know they're good drums so maybe it was the tuning that was off?

Tommy, you sound great! Two things about your Slingerland Gene Krupa Sound King Snare Drum. First, you can get an intact Slingerland Zoomatic Strainer. They are out there and they were durable! I am sure the strainer in you Drum was dropped and/or abused in some way. I have had several for over 40 years and the work just fine. Second, original Slingerland Snare Wires were the finest snare wires ever made. I have a set of Slingerland wires that are 15” long for a 14” drum. The snare wires go right to the edge on the Strainer side and they extend over the bearing edge on the Butt side. The snare wires employ snare cord on the Strainer side and an attached metal strap on the Butt side. You can bed the metal strap to attain a totally flat engagement of the snare wires against the snare head. Literally the whole Snare head has almost 100% Snare Wire engagement to produce an incomparable sound! It will out-perform your Bronze Supraphonic in both sensitivity/articulations and in power/volume. Please do that drum right Tommy! Great post! 😉👍🏻🥁🎼🇺🇸

I started messing around with reso heads recently and noticed a huge difference between the thinner diplomats and thicker Evans 300 even when tuned to the exact same pitch. The slingerland sounded best for my personal taste but both sounded really good. The whole kit sounds great.

#1 love your drumming--very nice; you have a great "top 40 feel for rock" ; #2 you must use the same heads for a better comparison; #3 the Ludwig has the sound I like, the Slingerland is not as sharp or crisp (however that is often the sound some drummers are looking for); to keep that top 40 crispy studio sound--use the Ludwig; #4 open up those toms--I know you are smoothing out the sound for recoding--but an Evans 2 ply without the tape (or for sure the UV's) will give good natural damping with a full sound--no boxes. But all that said, each to his own. Still great smooth rock tempos.

I was really surprised at how good the slingerland sounded with a clear head, it cut through nicely. I think if you used a coated head it would have sounded closer to you Ludwig. Now on the throw off of the ludwig, if it the P85 that's known flr getting loose and so people upgrade to the P88 which is what I'm going to eventually do for my Ludwig Acrolite Black Galaxy Sparkle 👍

You cited both the Slingerland Zoomatic and Ludwig P85 strainers as not being great. Neither ever was, so that's an understatement. :O But the Ludwig has the edge here for me.

I have the same slingerland snare and actually put a Ludwig strainer on it. It is so much better than the stock zoomatic…. Those are the worst! The slingerland COB with an upgraded strainer is an easy job and solid upgrade!

I definitely like the slingerland better. I had their festival snare which is pretty cheap and that thing was actually pretty good. Slingerland made some really good drums but they are underrated. A lot of older guys told me when they were new they were considered junk but I have owned ludwig and slingerland kits and I think the main issue is slingys are mad hard to tune, especially floor Tom’s. Their bearing edges are so thick it makes it hard to center the head.
@ineedstuff8286
@ineedstuff8286 Жыл бұрын
I spent a couple years trying to tune my floor tom… sittin right next to it as i read this mess age and was like, WHAT,!,?.???” No wonder. I tuned the 12 “ immediately. This floor tom never seems to sound like a comparable tone of 12 but different pitch etc.
@danhoyland142
@danhoyland142 Жыл бұрын
Yea dude, everyone drums tuning needs depends on the bearing edge. It effects the pitch by the lug when you tap it too. The slingers will have a high pitch when they are actually at a medium tuning. You gotta crank the bottom head reaaaaaal tight. There’s always one lug that is actually only finger tight too. Find that lug and tighten it 1.5 to 3 full turns while hitting the drum in the center with your drum stick. You will hear the warm bottom edge come out and you then you will also notice tremendous stick rebound from the drum now too. I love tuning drums by ear, it’s pretty much a hobby and been doing it for 20 years. I tuned a 3 ply slingy kit at a studio once for the engineer. These were spirit 1000s which had the maple poplar maple shell but with No reinforcement hoops. That floor too to this day was the best I ever heard.

@@danhoyland142 im like ready to smah mine w a hammer… ugh, you sound u know what is up though. I think my main problem is the lugs are bent maybe?.. i swear, the floor tom , snare and kick… all the lugs. As you tighten them, it gets loose, then tight… you think the lug is super tight, then you turn more and you realize the the head is total loose. I cant really do the “finger tight” thing because the lugs get tight at points that are stronger than my hand. Im just buyin a brand new snare, floor and kick… I cant take a chance and buy a used drums.
@danhoyland142
@danhoyland142 Жыл бұрын
Your lug bolts and inside the lugs need to be degreased and cleaned, and relubed, that’s all. Rust builds up inside the lugs with other debris and the old grease turns hard, which is exactly why your having that issue. Take the hoops off and wash each drum ( not bass drum) in the sink. After spray simple green in the lugs and throw all the bolts and washers in a cup of simple green. Let them sit for 30 minutes and scrub the bolt threads with a brush and use a thin ass brush to get into the lugs. Once they are clean, put the heads and hoops back on, and put white lithium grease on each thread before tightening. You will have a whole a new drum and it will solve all those issues.

Well....you know there's a retrofit plate that allows you to mount a Trick GS007 on a Zoomatic equipped Slingy with no new holes. I have a similar snare.... With the butt plate, if the mounting tabs face inward the spacing should be about 1.5". There's a Pearl Symphonic butt plate that has the same spacing. If the mounting tabs face outward, like mine.... The spacing will be in the 1 3/4 to 1 13/16.... There is a PDP plate that specs at 1 3/4. At 1 13/16 the Ludwig P33 (and Gibraltar version) are at those dimensions as well as the newer Atlas P35P. With these butt plates, you may have to do some slight reaming to adjust the dimensions, but it should be no big deal. With that hardware it would become your most reliable drum. The brass slingy should be darker in tone both because it's brass but also because the shell is much thicker than a Ludwig brass shell. It also likely has brass hoops too (take good care of these). If you find it too dark try a coated Ambassador to get more attack and brightness. That Controlled Sound on there should be 2 ply and should have less harmonic content and is a darker overall sound.

@@PrettyCoolDrumShow Another thing, if you need to open it up more in the highs. Maybe try S-hoops? They are Slingerland style inward flanged hoops, but might be made out of steel instead of brass. I didn't actually see a description of what material they are made of, but are described as "heavy duty". Obviously, take good care of the original brass hoops, but the steel would be harder and transmit more energy through the hoops.
