What do you think about this drum set?

May be the best drum documentary on a Slingerland kit in existence. The other one wasn't near this good. Kudos to Stephen and Grant for giving this kit a new life!

I have one of these kits, It was called the Concorde, twin 24” bass drums 12” 13” 14” 15” toms, 16” 20” floor toms. Didn’t get the bongos or the snare but it is an amazing sounding kit. The 20” floor Tom is a literal cannon!

Years ago I got a copper wood set drums were bass 22" The toms were 6",8",10,12",13",14",15", Floor toms were, 16",18",20", The snare's were 5x14 and 6.5x14 both were TDR snare's. But the coolest thing was the 6"-14" mounted toms were Slingerland "Cut Away " toms. Talking rare sets

As a young guy, I grew up, through high school, playing Slingerland Drums (marching, concert and drum sets). I liked the TDR throwoffs, especially on their marching snare drums. Fast forward to college, Slingerland was used for marching percussion - the snare drums were interesting thin maple shells, with a clunky throwoff. For me, the brand represents nostalgia, and I’m glad that you are enjoying your set! Cheers! 🍻

I had a copper over wood TDR snare. I think it was 6.5 x 14 with the TDR strainer. Absolutely great sounding drum and as long as you could protect the copper from oxidyzing it looked feakin' awesome. I bought it in 1973 after seeing the Santa Clara Vanguard drum corps introduce that color and it looked incredibly badass.

I have a Mid-90’s Slingerland Studio King Gregg Bissonette signature kit that was owned by John Luke Hebert of King Diamond. It was actually used to record KD’s Voodoo album. A few years after I bought them from John Luke, Gregg did a clinic in my home town. I brought the kit for him to check out. He was so excited to see it he ended up playing it for part of the clinic and signing the inside of the kit. I love that kit so much. Not only does it have an amazing story, it’s just one of the best kits I’ve ever heard. I miss Slingerland so much. I hope DW does something good with the name.

I had a 70’s 9 piece Black Chrome Slingerland all concert toms with exception of one floor tom, I miss that kit😊 I don’t miss the hardware though 😁

I still like the sound and glad you guys like the sound also. Happy that, after all these years, mine has non of the corrosion you described. Awesome video - thank you.

Great job on this video! Interesting story, too ...I didn't know this stuff. I used to love Slingerland drums. Had a simply amazing custom kit made back in '77 at Frank's Drum Shop in Chicago on Wabash. 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, single headed "power" (deep) toms, 18 & 20 floors ...monster 26 x18 kick. A Neil Peart "sort of" kit with a Zeppelin similar-size kick. $2500 back in that day. Black wrap around 5-ply maple shells. All Yamaha hardware drilled into the bare Slingerland shells right there in front of my own eyes. Rims, lugs, mounts, etc. I was 17 back then. Not only was it an awesome experience & much, much fun, but the kit itself sounded off-the-charts. Freakin' amazing. I had a Slingerland "black chrome" (over maple) set before that. THAT was an amazing kit, as well. Is why I went to a Slingerland shell for my custom build. Slingerlands used to be exxxcellent drums. This was a cool video! I remember these well! Thanks for this!

I got a 14”x22” kick back in 1974 copper wrapped over wood Slingerland. Still the beat sounding kick I have ever had and still play it now. It was an error in shipping or the person who bought the kit did not want a double bass kit, whichever I would up with a kick I just love even though it has much patina on it. Have though I may un wrap it and refinish since its maple but so far just left it to be.

That looks suspiciously like a John Guerin kit circa '73 Joni Mitchell "Miles of Isles" era. It's too bad about the Metallurgical mishap because that's a killer finish. Great video guys!

That book looks interesting might have to snag a copy. I used to work at Slingerland in Niles in the late seventies most fun job I ever had!

Slingerland in the 70’s made great drums ! It until the 80’s that Slingerland closed its factory in Niles Illinois . I have a 70’s Slingerland set Chrome over wood that I restored with a 26” bass and DW9000 hardware ! DW bought the rites to Slingerland but failed to bring back the Slingerland brand to its glory !

Such a beautiful awesome gift and to cut it down to just 4 drums does it a disservice

I absolutely LOVE the slingerland copper over wood kits. Bill Ward of Black Sabbath used the floor toms of this series in his performance with the band at California jam.

As a Slingerland fan since the 1970s, I hereby subscribe! I still have my Rosewood veneer 80N Buddy Rich kit, as seen on the 1979 catalog cover.

Thanks for this. I pretty much had this set, except the toms were all double headed, and the bass was 28". The copper was completely pitted. Refinished everything in white pearl. The 18" tom is now a bass drum. I gig with it as a 4 piece. Sounds great.

Neil Peart used the Concert Tom's in the Copper Finish. They were added to his original Slingerland kit and can be seen on the cover of "All The World's A Stage," live album. They modified the photo a bit, so the Copper and the Chrome on the main kit, blended better.

I love Slingerlands, especially the pre 80's stuff! Thanks for doing this video. I play a natural maple finish Slingerland set. I love that copper finish. It's a shame the corrosion became a problem. The 3-ply shells with re-rings have a particular sound that many like!

I actually have half of this Concorde kit! I even made a video about it several months ago. The finish looks terrible on mine but it still sounds great. Thanks for the great video, guys!

About ten years ago, Taye drums (Ray Ayotte’s Chinese manufactured drums he worked on after selling Ayotte Drums) released copper and other metal wrapped wood drums. They also released “octoplus”-like configurations and concert tom kits. Taye. I think they’re defunct now.

I had a set just like this one that I bought in 1970's. The copper did exactly like the second tom you showed. Considerable tarnishing and pitting. The set sounded fine and at the time my favorite drummer Phil Ehart was endorsing them. But the shells looked terrible after a few years, so I ended up getting rid of them and buying a Pearl World Series (which sounded great but had a similar problem as the Slingerland set, it was white and had been in fluorescent lighting that yellowed the toms).

That copper finish gives it a Bonham vibe. Sounds awesome. A real vintage look,pity the copper oxidised.

one of my fave (desert island disc)albums is "Another Kind of Blues" by The UK SUBS and I'm pretty sure that Pete Davies played a very similar kit, maybe the same, as soon as as saw this vid I immediately thought this. I can hear it here.

Kit sounds Great to Me!

IIRC Neil Peart's original Slingerland kit had concert toms with the copper finish, and I think his favorite snare also came in a copper finish originally as well. Crazy stuff! They sound amazing. Also, I laughed a little when you were playing the kit with Bob's caricature on the bass drum head and it looked like he was headbanging as you were playing 😅

I bought one of these drum sets at a thrift store about ten years ago. It has 10, 12, 13, and 14 inch concert toms and an 18” floor tom. The bass drum is a 26”. The real interesting piece is the snare drum…6.5x14” but the batter side has 12 lugs and the resonant side has 6 lugs. I mainly just use the snare drum and occasionally the bass drum. All the drums are pretty corroded, but I don’t mind it so much anymore…gives it some character…but I also didn’t buy it new.

Bought a kit like this for $250. Best sounding kit I ever owned. The wrap was completely shot however/ corroded-tarnished. It consisted of a 24” bass, 13 and 14 toms, and an 18” floor tom. Still miss that kit!

Nigel Olsen (Elton John’s drummer) played the Slingerland Concord kit. Don’t remember if it was copper or chrome though.

I love these Copper Slingerlands. I have just about all sizes. 6 snares as well that are a mix of 3 ply with re-rings and 5 ply depending on era. They were in fact made over many years in the 70's, serial numbers and hardware tell the tale. I have an early copper 12.14.20 kit that may indeed predate the catalog release by 3 years! - I'll save everyone all the details but it all rings true to 1970.. But wow, I love these drums. Controlled solid tones! Looking for the canister throne!! Seen pictures of one that seems to live in Canada. Original pictures from 1970's Calgary band and maybe now lives in Toronto - Gibby L please sell it to me!!

My first new kit was a 1974 Slingerland 5 piece in natural wood (I'm old) which I bought from The Drum Shop in downtown Detroit. Natural wood was the cheapest finish - all the wraps were more expensive. It was the worst set of drums I've ever owned. When the tom shells were set on a glass plate they would all wobble like a drunken sailor - just terrible edges. The stain was uneven and looked like it was finished by a blind man. They sounded like playing cardboard boxes. The COB snare, though, was a beauty. I trashed the rest of the set but still own and occasionally use the snare. It's sad but not surprising that Slingerland went out of business. Also, occasionally watch your videos and still learning from them. Thank you!

The drums sound good. I think the Copper is super cool. Come to think of it, I’ve never seen a copper finished kit before this.

I see that the drums have reinforcement rings. I always thought that the Tom mount on the bass drum was introduced when the 5 ply shell was introduced. Learn something new everyday

This kit sounds amazing. Come to think of it, pretty much everything I’ve heard from Slingerland from this era sounds great. They are for some reason less sought-after than Ludwig or Rogers, but if I was looking for a vintage kit without breaking the bank I would play Slingies all day.

Wouldn't want to polish them, but they sound pretty darn good.

I loved the copper finish...almost got one off E-Bay around 2008. And I almost bought a new Taye kit with the copper finish...but got the silver sparkle instead. I just always liked the look of the copper finish. Only seen one that had the problem of going bad. And it was dur to the drummer spitting lemon and lime slices up in the air and they would fall on the kit. He also never mde any attempt to clean them. The chrome was also nasty. He said it gave them characture. Yeah I think the shots had burned his brain up.

Those would look amazing if you could figure out how to get the copper to oxidize green and then remove some to make a burst finish.

I've seen there ads back in the good ole days of Modern Drummer being in print. I never have seen or heard one in person. I think you should buy a set and do a comparison video.😊

I think Rob Cook deserves a mention for authoring the Slingerland book.

Once you accept that COLOR SELLS DRUMS nothing will strike you as 'odd'. 'SELLING' was really the name of the Game!! I have owned and played Slingerland drums for close to 50 years and you can really appreciate them when they are played softly; hitting them that hard really doesn't give you a sense of their overall musicality. As they say..."Rock on Dude!..."

really amazing looking kit. So cool..I have a question as a NOOB "drummer". I say drummer in quotations because i never call myself a drummer. I just say I make noise. SO having that out the way. I dont mic my kit. I simply dont have the money,knowledge and i guess "need" for it. BUT my question is, how does this kit sound just recorded with a phone? or webcam? or other lesser quality means? Do most kits just sound similar? THEN when you mic them can you change the way everything sounds from there?? Thanks for any information you care to share..

Uhh, I bought a 1973 set of Slingerlands in antique copper. It tarnished out in six monthes. Ohh and the sounded as bad as the chrome set. I called them and they replaced all the shells!! They told me keep the old shells.I got just wood mahogany stain. Uhh I still have them. Great sounding set. Uhh Slingerland had kind of a bad image. They were excellent quality and sounded great but were seen as grandpa,s drums because all the endorsees were 40,s big band drummers.

I had a chrome metal covered Ludwig kit with a 24" bass drum. I got rid of it because it was so damn heavy. I regret that let me tell you.

Knew the student who sent this kit to Stephen would be Bob.

Sounds killer! Looks ridiculous...lyyy awesome!!! Minus the black garbage all over one of them. Funny, Neil Peart's original #1 Slingerland snare that he played for almost two decades was an old Artist with that same copper wrap. I wonder if your snare is too? They're extremely hard to find on their own these days. Now I know why hahaha!

I don't remember what year Gibson bought them, but that was pretty much the end of Slingerland.

I had that exact kit new in 1973....I hated that kit!! It sounded like crap and after 3 or 4 moths is started looking like shit! The copper got weird spots and in the studio it was a constant struggle to get the ring out! Hated it and had a hard time getting rid of them! You can see all the spots on the ones as you unpack them

I play a 1963 Slingerland, and they really sing. That's why I don't understand the low tuning. There's no tone. Just flat, thuddy drums. I'd love to hear them tuned up and hear some decay and a slcrisp snare drum.

And PLEASE don't add saturation to that kick drum. It sounds awesome in it's natural state👍✌

I once had a 1976 Slingerland product catalog that did in fact list copper as a covered finish option. Along with mirrored chrome. Perhaps you couldn't actually get it through your local dealer but it was in the '76 catalog! 💯👍

Slingerland eventually died for similar reasons. Bad management. I had some 79 slingerland and the shells sounded great. Hated the hardware.

I had one like this with the chrome finish. Sounded terrible. The shells provided no resonance at all. The hardware was awful too.
