Luffy's VA, Mayumi went crazy while recording this episode. I can just feel the passion in her through Luffy's voice 🔥

The most mindblowing thing is that back in Skypiea, when Straw Hats were dancing with the wolves, the silhouette of Luffy looked EXACTLY like that of Nika. And also, in Calgara & Noland's flashback, Calgara's village was said to worship the Sun God. And the Sun God was also mentioned in Elbaf, during Big Mom's flashback! Years ago, Oda said that Luffy dancing with the wolves is his favorite moment in OP. It's absolutely insane to think that Oda had all of this planned. G5 has to be the most unique, inovative, fitting and genius transformation in media & fits Luffy's personality PERFECTLY! Wow!

What the Gorosei meant by "Ridiculous" is not that it's the "strongest" fruit or "Ridiulously strong" fruit, but it's the "funniest/craziest" fruit in the world. This awakening turns Luffy, people, and things around him like a cartoon, comical, or a joke. You can see that Luffy is having so much fun and this is how he should be when he's in this form. He's suppose to enjoy, laugh and be playful, and that's that makes him "Joyboy". Amazing animation!! 🔥

To think that the explanation of his power is bringing smiles to people's faces everywhere he goes and then realize we've been smiling and laughing every time he's on screen truly makes this that more special for me

Luffy having a mythical zoan makes sense considering he was the only "paramecia" who had transformations in the form of gears and also his insane durability is a well established feature of a zoan fruit.

Luffy truly has the most ridiculous power in the world. His laugh is just so contagious, and you can't help, but just smile and laugh throughout the episode. Animators absolutely nailed how we envisioned it while reading the manga. 5th gear will be on full display the next few episodes 💯🥁

Just so you know there was a new ENDING this ep, the first one in 17 years! Also, next ep there will be a new opening, which is supposed to have insanely good visuals as it is directed by megumi ishitani! (she also directed episode 1015)

The ultimate power up being essentially toon force is such a brilliantly simple move by Oda, it fits One Piece and especially Luffy perfectly! Love how it isn't just a straight power boost but truly allows Luffy's personality and fighting style to shine in even more ridiculous ways.

The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Daibutsu is a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows its user to transform into a Daibutsu (a giant gold Buddha) at will. It was eaten by Sengoku, the former fleet admiral of the Marines.

The absolute most perfect transformation for Luffy. It perfectly embodies what he's always wanted...he FREEDOM!

You guys are not ready for the next 2 episodes, trust me! This is gonna be absolutely amazing, I can't wait the Sunday! ✨️✨️✨️ just in case you don't get it, luffy's new power allows him to do everything he wants to do, he literally said that and he do exactly that! He can bend the reality to the ways he wants, it's just absolutely fantastic!

The thing with the eyes popping and everything isn't just for giggles, it's literally a part of the fruit. The awakened form of the gomu gomu no mi basically grants Luffy the ability to turn everything around him goofy/into and old cartoon -> Gorosei: Awakening grants the user more freedom.

There are two facts about Gear 5 that makes it the most interesting form to me: 1. Oda's original idea for Luffy's powers was for him to emulate old school cartoons, but for one reason or another he shelved the idea until Gear 5 was being conceptualized. And 2. the reason it's so goofy is because Oda had grown tired of how most form changes had a serious tone to them. So, instead of following the trend he instead had Luffy act goofy and chaotic.

There is a rubber tree called banyan tree, in the south of the land of Kyushu in Japan. and Another name for the banyan tree is "NIKA" The banyan tree grants people's wishes. It is also said to be inhabited by fire fairies. Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece, is from Kumamoto in the south of Kyushu.

It's so amazing watching these reaction to gear 5 and seeing everyone laugh along with Luffy it's truly contagious. From the beginning Luffy has always laughed and smiled in fights. It threw some of his opponents off because they wanted to know how he could keep smiling while fighting.. well it all makes sense now why. His gear 5 fits him 100% and the laughter, and smile it's great! Excited for the next two episodes! Great reaction you guys!

The G5 transformation really suits Luffy’s character,having it being cartoonish/goofy, fun and carefree really makes his character stand out, This is truely amazing to witness 🙌

Luffy's Devil Fruit is special because it has properties of both Zoan and paramecia. Paramecia properties allow him to affect his surroundings including people and Zoan properties allow him to transform into that Joy boy like state that is gear 5. Absolutely love this writing by Oda , I remember when I read this I lost my mind.

The fact that Luffy’s true power isn’t some gloom and doom type of transformation but is basically from Loony Tunes is just so fitting for him

The way the elders talk about his devil fruit is interesting and important, saying his body has rubber properties, but they also mention "freedom" as other property that his body gains/enhances when awakened. The warrior of liberation/Joyboy fits Luffy so much ❤

I just know Oda is giggling with excitement seeing Gear 5 come to life. This is probably what he saw in his head when he was drawing on the page. And what's even crazier is this is just the start of the fight!

Gear 5 is very fitting as a transformation. With this awakening he has the possibility to do what he wants. Exactly what he always stands for: freedom! These goofy animations also hit exactly what One Piece simply is. In general, there were some references to Nika in other arcs back then. The best example of this is really Skypia as the sun god was mentioned in the Noland flashback.

I was smiling, the whole time. I love the theme of one piece instead of looking and being cool like other most shounen anime, which nothing wrong with that. But taking the theme of joy and laughter as a power is just so different in the MOST amazing way

WG tried to prevent Joyboy's return, but they ended up enabling it =D. This episode felt too goofy at first with the Looney Tunes antics, but after a few re-watches it grew on me and made me appreciate the episode as a whole. Kaido was happy that Luffy did not die, now he can try his hand at defeating him legitamately. Try being the operative word :P edit: Something worth noting is that Luffy's movements made both Doflamingo and Kaido question how he could manipulate his body as he did, to them something else was going on with how he ought. Luffy can sort of bend reality to a degree.

You guys are the first reactors I’ve watched to notice that luffy’s fruit was not a paramecia and was actually a zoan mythical type so I thank you for paying attention to that important detail.

In case nobody knew all the animation sounds during the episode. Gear 5 was created by Warner bros so this episode was mostly Warner bros doing which is why it had the looney tunes and Tom and Jerry sounds in there. Including the cartoonish vibes

Yeah just to let you know, animators confirmed that the display of Gear 5 is not just this episode, many talented animators and staff members have came to together create a batch of episodes that will continue in the coming weeks with alot of high budget productions. So look forward to it.

I think this actually be my favorite transformation in all of anime. It seems to capture what most others lack. It feels...original and more importantly...natural. It isnt him getting a new form just to get one, he always had this power but hadnt been able to fully unlock it until now, and even now it seems that he can still go WAY further with it as this is his first time transforming into it and doesnt know all the extra shit he can do now. But it didnt feel forced, it felt just perfect. And the animation and score obviously are lifting a ton of weight on their own.

There are 4 Human-Human type devil fruit in series, which eaten by Chopper (the standard Human-Human Fruit), Sengoku (Mystical Type Daibutsu-turning him into gigantic golden Buddha), the fox from Wano named Onimaru (Mystical type Onyudo-turning him into Yokai Monk) & Luffy (Nika).

It might not be the animation of most non-manga reader is expecting because of its hype, because it's not sharp and or as intense of Zorror vs King it is more like cartoonist type of animation, but it is pretty accurate with the manga so kudos to the animator. Also, Cartoons are pretty funny and hilarious to watch so you kinda fits with Nika as mentioned to bring smiles to their faces.

The fruit and its users has probably failed time and time again! Luffy’s character and personality fits perfectly with the fruit and its will. Therefore he will succeed unlike his predecessors!! Also loved the reaction! You two perfectly understood this transformation and what it’s about!

The cartoonish animation definitely fitted gear five, they showed how free luffy was while fighting and the animation showed how fun it was for luffy, it also shows his childish behaviour since the very beginning its so cute.

There's another great part to this being animated, the voice acting. I could gush all day about Mayumi's incredible job voicing Luffy here. But actually its the Gorosei. The one who says, "its the most ridiculous power in the world." Listen to the word he uses, (I'm gonna butcher the spelling in English) zakeruna? Either way, its the word people say when they find something ridiculous. Not the word to say something is super powerful, but the literal meaning of ridiculous. As if someone tells you they saw someone running in the sky, and you say, "that's ridiculous." If you've watched anime, you've definitely heard this word a lot. "Hu zakerunda!!" Usually the protagonist saying that to the villains evil plan or whatever

There's soooo many moments throughout the story that foreshadow this that atp you'll probably have to reread / rewatch to catch everything and put it into context but the main, I'd say, moments in skypiea alone are - the camp fire scene where luffy is doing the Nika pose with usopp playing the drums behind him, the mention of the different gods - the sun god being one of them, the people begging for a god to save them and luffy beats the false God Enel / Eneru while saying "let the sun shine" and literally be back lit by the sun, plus another moment that I wont get into bc it's a spoiler for the next ep but yea,,, theres so so so so much throughout the story, even the sunny, the sun pirates, the fishman island prophecy and some of the lyrics in binks sake are hints - "...beat upon the drums, if you lose your nerve, this breath could be your last. But if you hold on, the morning sun will rise..." which not only references luffy but "romance dawn", the title of the very first chapter of OP & some of odas earlier work when he was in the process of figuring out what exactly he wanted to do, luffys featured in all of them along with some other OP characters, plus the most obvious, the dawn that people have been talking about, especially toki,, I could go on for ages but yea, theres alot 😭 CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT FEW EPS AHHHH 😭❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

4:57 yes we've seen at least 3 : Chopper, Sengoku(his model is Buddha) and now Luffy 6:00 from what I read nika is roughly tranlated as "toothy grin" 16:03 well either you missed the new ed or was just edited it out cause they brought ed back to One Piece apparently but other than that you guys didn't miss much I still can't believe that brought back ED and they shorten OP too

For those confused as to how he is rubber when he is confirmed to be a Zoan fruit user; the Nika Nika fruit is able to give the user the ability to be free of any reality restraints and give life to any imagination the user thinks of to become true. So if Luffy believes he is a paramicia fruit user; his abilities will manifest as one. Anything Luffy believes to be true will become true and him awaking as if he was like how Doffy or Katakuri awakened; is just a by product of his will transcending reality. This explains his gears, him surviving Magelion poison, he not cold in harsh winter environments and his sandals never falling off.

This certainly does explain a lot about how luffy and crew has survived his shenanigans. Being hit with such force that people go flying would knock most of, but since it's toon force from luffy, they just get hurt. Or how usopp and Nami can hurt him even without haki. Because luffy believes it'll hurt.

There was alot of articles about a WB animator joining the animation for Gear Fifth as well. Turns out the guy was a contractor that helped with some WB stuff, not specifically a WB animator, but still can see why that would be useful for this episode.

Yess! This is the perfect transformation for Luffy, he always had crazy moves on fights, always free and out the box. And now he has a power that allows his imagination to fight however he feels like! I N S A N E TOONWORLD ON THAT SHIT

Nika in japanese can be interpreted as the expression of someone smiling. In the manga,the onomatopoeia used when luffy began to transform and smiled was "Nika". It also fits with the lore of his fruit, a warrior who fought as he fancied bringing smiles to everyone (prob because of how ridiculuous and goofy his powers are).

Instead of getting angry and being all serious. Luffy laughing while transforming into the sun god is the most terrifying thing any of enemies can witness.

The reason for the cartoony feel is luffys awakening, he's basically jim Carrey "the mask", he effects the area around him including the people he interacts with which is why kaidos eye's popped out when he was suddenly yanked out the building and when he got hit with his own attack

i’m sure someone else has already mentioned this, but sengoku the former fleet admiral also has a mythical version of the hito hito no mi (human human fruit). his is the model daibutsu a golden buddha statue

Think about it. Boa's sisters both have snake type fruits, just different models (Anaconda and Salamander, if I'm not mistaken). We saw several bird models (falcon and phoenix), several cat and dog models, and we also saw at least 3 human model Zoan fruits. Choper just has the basic model, a regular Human-Human, as he is a reindeer who ate it. Sengoku has the human fruit, model Budah, also mythical type, like Luffy, who has the human fruit, model Sun God Nika, type mythical.

I love Gear 5 because it really embodies old Rubber Hose Animation. It goes so perfectly with Luffy's whole personality and really resonates with the series as a whole. From the weird character designs and the Rubber ability. It's such a silly thing to take seriously, but it works so well in this world and story.

Quick piece of info : The more you laugh in Japanese is ' Warau Hodo ni ka'. Also at the end of chapter 1043, when Luffy wakes up with a smile it's written ' he grins', the Japanese translation of it is literally Nika.

I like this transformation more than in other anime’s because he don’t fight with rage because somebody died or something. He’s fighting while having the fun of his life and that fits so perfectly with his character

The attack you guys were talking about wasn't jet pistol, but RED HAWK, in which he covers his arm in haki and flames, that was the exact same name Ace used for his attack

From what I read they spent 7 months animating this episode. Or they finished animating 7 months ago. Can't remember which it was. They also had an animator that worked on Space Jam work on a particular scene. Pretty awesome stuff!

The most striking thing is that partly when the Drums of the liberation are heard in the background, timpani are heard that sound identical to the music of Capoeira, being that Luffy would be Portuguese and it is The dance and music of The slaves represent the liberation through this dance and fight to the sound of timpani

I love the change from how other animes do power ups in a very serious way One piece just made everyone laugh with how this transformation and fight went On brand for him being joyboy

Just to tell you in case, in the end of the episode there isn't just the preview of the next episode, there is also a little animation with a music before the preview if you didn't see her yet. And btw the gear 5 suit so damn good to luffy, one of the best transformation i've seen in one piece.🔥

The looney toons fight scene animation was insane and the sound effects were just perfect

Just to explain: Luffy's fruit is a Hito Hito just like Chopper's, only with a mythical factor behind it, like Sengoku's fruit, which is also a mythical Hito Hito of the Buddha. There are these variables with Zoan fruits, for example, Neko means cat, so all felines will be among the Neko model variables. (tigers, lions, kittens, etc.)
