I think this episode simply suffered the same problem as "Feeling Pinkie Keen". Where they expect you to interpret the full details of what the dialogue implies. In this case, I'm sure that they'd discuss a compromise with Pinkie on the way back home, but her disruptiveness wasn't mentioned on screen, so people don't think that discussion exists. I very much doubt that Pinkie's friends were resigning themselves to being annoyed by her playing, they were merely taking back the (frankly idiotic) suggestion that Pinkie should stop entirely. As I mentioned several times in the reaction, Twilight worded her talk with Pinkie way too poorly. Twilight made it about Pinkie sucking at the instrument instead of directly mentioning the disruption. Which baffles me because that's why everyone was pissed, so why not bring it up? Simply telling her "you're not good, so quit" seemed to go against the message of the show.

You make an excellent point, but there is one other big flaw I find with how things were executed. My other main problem with this episode is that Pinkie's life suddenly revolves around an instrument she by all indications just recently started playing. She outright tried to abandon her life in Ponyville with her friends because she couldn't stand being unable to experience the music. What happened to spreading joy and making other ponies smile being the thing that gave meaning to Pinkie Pie's life and made her happy? Why was she willing to give up everything her identity and life was built around just for some glorified bagpipes?! The moral of not letting your personal enjoyment of something distract you from how you might be bothering others is a great one, but it just seems like Pinkie became too attached to the yovidaphone and somehow forgot all the joy she had in her life before she started playing it.

Usually I'd be really annoyed at Maud's quirks being artificially turned up as far as they are here, but I think it actually works in this one case, since it comes off as her being pissed at them for upsetting her sister and deliberately trolling them. As someone who's more Maud-like than not, I can definitely relate.

I know there were also a lot of people saying that Pinkie was acting out of character, especially with her very extreme reaction to not being able to play, and her refusal to get over it, going so far as to leave Ponyville and all her friends. However, as someone who suffers from depression myself, I can confirm that, when it hits, you pretty much become a different person. You find yourself thinking things and even doing things you normally wouldn't, because your depression fools you into thinking there's no other way. I agree with you about how Twilight chose the wrong way to go about addressing the issue, but I also think the episode did a very good job of showing jsut how badly depression can mess with someone's head, which I think is something that a lot of people don't seem to get when they watch this episode. You're the third reactor I've seen watch this, and I've watched a couple of reviews as well, and not once, that I've seen, has anyone brought up the nature of depression and how it effects people.

When Twilight told Pinkie to stop playing that whatever it's called, something I only thought about later on is how it felt like the moral in "Horse Play" took somewhat of a hit in this episode, and made Twilight look bad at the same time. Let's think about it: telling Celestia she was bad at acting was what Twilight didn't want to do in Horse Play, which created a big mess and ultimately got Celestia mad at her, and the moral in that episode was pretty much that Twilight should've just told Celestia the truth: tell her that she couldn't act, right? BUT when Twilight did that to Pinkie in this episode...well we saw what happened. Here, Twilight messed up again, but this time by actually using a lesson she learned not long ago, but she didn't take into account that she might not be able to do it the same way here. Think about that for a second: using a lesson she just learned was partly what made that Alicorn mess up again. This is why I really can't criticize Twiight in this episode: she literally used a lesson she learned earlier in this season, and it backfired in her face. She might've even been better off going with that spell idea she was considering, before Applejack talked her out of it. She's not Starlight, who's ideas with spells typically backfires in her face lol

I had mixed feelings about this episode, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt the same way. Still, that's not to say it's a terrible episode, or even necessarily a bad one. I don't have a problem with Pinkie loving to play the yovidaphone. I'm happy for her. She's shown an aptitude at many instruments (except the guitar, lol) and it fits with her closeness to yak culture as the Friendship Ambassador to the Yaks. She also clearly has a lot of fun playing it, though perhaps she enjoys it a little _too_ much, lol. It would've been nice to know how she got one and why she started playing it, though. Also would've been nice to have Yona or Prince Rutherford's input on it. What I do have a problem with is what you've already pointed out. Pinkie has had a problem with obliviousness in the past, but this was reaching a whole new level: playing her yovidaphone at the worst times and disrupting her friends' lives. That wasn't the worst of it, though. When the girls went to confront her, even though they discussed among themselves why Pinkie's playing was getting to them, Twi worded it in the most bare-bones way she could. Basically, 'you suck, so stop'. If she _had_ explained it properly to Pinkie, perhaps she would've understood better. Instead, it just makes Twi and the others look selfish and incompetent, making Pinkie give up a hobby because she's not good at it. Twi ought to know better than that. It doesn't help, either, that she had to be reminded, by Applejack, no less, that lying about someone's abilities isn't the way to go. A nice call-back to Horse Play. It broke my heart to see Pinkie heartbroken over giving up the yovidaphone, and I was distressed to see the return of Pinkamena. Only this time, she wasn't consumed with paranoia and rage, but depression and listlessness. All the color had gone out of her life, to the point where she couldn't enjoy the things she _is_ good at and should be grateful for, culminating in moving away to Yakyakistan over it, without a word to her dearest friends. I know Pinkie exaggerates her feelings a lot, but this felt a bit too extreme even for her. Luckily, it was setting up for a sweet ending: the girls encourage Pinkie to play again (even if they still never bring up Pinkie practicing where she won't disturb others, but like you said, could very well have happened on the way home), knowing that, as you said, telling her to stop playing altogether was a stupid thing to do. Plus, despite her lack of apparent skill, she plays to the satisfaction of the yaks. As it turns out, the yovidaphone is meant to make its player happy, regardless of how its played: if Pinkie has fun playing it, whatever she plays is a masterpiece. A nice reinforcement of a lesson Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo taught us in On Your Marks: you don't have to be good at something to enjoy it. =) Random notes: -Insert Benny Hill joke here, lol -Fluttershy being at the start of an episode is always a good way to begin it. =) -"He's so bipolar. A bully one day, and a sweetie-pie the next." The sweet part of him seems to only come out around Fluttershy, too. -That poor bird. -"We're gonna get shipping fan art of those two, aren't we?" There _have_ been weirder ships...I think. -Nice to see the giraffe back. =) -...Not so nice to see Pinkie rudely wake it and the other animals up... -"Wow, Pinkie's just being a nuisance." And, like always, she doesn't seem to realize it... -Well, that's _one_ way to get applesauce... -"2nd place. Garbage! Throw it away!" As if Rainbow Dash would ever settle for less, lol -Poor Flutters, asleep on her hooves.

Its kinda funny Pinkie had her eyes closed at the perfect when destroying everything. If she had closed her eyes a second later she would have caught Fluttershy saying no. Or if she opened her eyes during the AJ scene she would have seen what she did to Applejack's apples (Its possible that pinkie was using that road to get somewhere to practice & its possible that the road she was taking actually wasn't apart of the apple family's land but was a road leading outside of town or somewhere else entirely). For the Rarity scene i guess Pinkie offered to play for Rarity while she worked & Rarity said yes just to be supportive but thats just a guess. Does the stadium the wonderbolt shows are held at have no rules??? Because between Rainbow's parents firing fireworks into the show & Pinkie playing a loud instrument in the crowd im starting to think it doesn't have any (I don't remember if any other weird things that happened there) If the place does have rules the security needs to be fired.

While I agree with some of your points regarding the episode (Including how Twilight worded that poorly, though I don't blame her for that, as it's a tricky thing to do), I personally found my main problem to be this: Why not have the Yak who was able to play the Yovidaphone beautifully in Yak-yakistan give Pinkie private lessons on how to play it that way? That solves the problem of her being a disruptive nuisance to everypony else, and makes it so that she doesn't feel bad because she's legitimately learning how to play it properly and won't have to give up doing it. It just seems like such another obvious solution that was overlooked, which caused my frustration and general distaste for the episode. I don't outright hate it, but I definitely feel like it wasn't the strongest of the season.

I kind of figured Rainbow Dash would take up that part in Secrets & Pies, to be honest at any time with Pinkie. But yeah, that was kind of harsh of Twilight to word it that way. But apparently, no pony else had anything better to say. But you asked about Starlight, how much harsher would her up-fronted-ness be? And I find this episode to be playing on the old trope of bagpipes sounding like strangling a cat, and only a tRue Scottsman would appReciate it (ducktales). Then again, not sure if one should try playing "up-beat jazz" on such an instrument, which maybe Pinkie was doing. May have heard some notes from YacketySax in there. ;)

I like this episode, and you pretty much nailed my own thoughts about it. Even down to Twilight's wording not bothering me that much on repeated viewings. And thank goodness you did; you're one of the few to to get what the episode is trying to say, as usual. Most people I saw hated this episode cause they thought the ending sucked because apparently "Twilight was right in what she did" and "Pinkie was just being annoying, obsessive and should've quit" and "didn't get lectured in the end for her behaviour like she should have". Cause that's what you do to your friends... tell them to quit the hobbies they love just cause their practicing annoys you. Sigh. Literally all reactors I've seen (and most people in general) thought this, so you're in for quite the opposing thoughts if you end up watching them. Once again these people completely miss the point, and I for the life of me can't see how. You literally understood it from the get-go (to the point of your own annoyance) and meanwhile all these other people can't grasp this simplest of moral lessons *meant for kids*, to even bring it up as a subject. They completely, as per usual, missed the key elements of the episode: Pinkie playing by herself in the forest not bothering anyone until her friends SPECIFICALLY pretended her playing was good and wouldn't say a thing to her even though she was being a bother, the fact that the montage of Pinkie annoying them is exaggerated for cartoonish purposes, and the fact that in the end they didn't slap it in our face that Pinkie should practice somewhere where she doesn't bother others (because they probably thought even if they don't say this out loud, literally every child over the age of three would understand that's what ended up happening). Just annoys me that more and more decent episodes are getting a bad rap because people just not understanding simple concepts like this. Seems most people have apparently labeled this entire season as garbage and disappointment, and 90% of the reasons I see why is the issue of not managing or even trying to understand the message behind episodes, such as what happened with this one. In reality, the season was a very good one. Not the best, but definitely good.

The lesson about you not needing to be good at something to do it, but you go it because you enjoy it, is a really good lesson, and is one of those lessons that some older fans need to learn/relearn. If you have a hobby you really like doing, you really shouldn't be told not to do it because you're not good at it. If you're not trying to do any harm and just having fun, no one should tell you not to do your hobbies. That's something I'll always defend. Especially since Pinkie wasn't trying to do any harm; she just wanted to enjoy a new hobby she picked up, but was hurt when the rest of the Mane 6 told her to stop playing without even saying they even said it; it was more than them just being annoyed. But they never really told her that part. "Just "stop playing, you're no good" The only reason I had any kind of issue with the ending is that they ended the episode in a way that kinda hurts the lesson; you also can't just do what you want all the time and expect others to just lay down for you, like their own feelings mean nothing. When the lesson is used at that level, people become spoiled and it's not just kids either; which i've seen happen more than once; which was why I didn't care too much for the ending. I might not had that issue if I never saw that happens when that lesson's abused, or don't see it as much, and these days, a lot of people will do that. Though it still doesn't take away that the lesson was still a very good one.

Okay, finished the video. I'll say I'm a little biased, Pinkie is my favourite pony by far, so it's hard to outright dislike an episode that puts her in the centre(maybe she didn't get lots of screen time, but it was a Pinkie episode). I also love Pinkamena, Party of One being one of the most memorable Pinkie episodes. For her return, it was great. The episode on a whole was not my favourite thing, but has its moments. The lesson was obvious, but a good one. I feel like the characters were handled okay. Twilight and crew didn't get their point across the way they meant it, and even though the point was ultimately flawed, I think they really meant to portray it differently than they had. Communication isn't always perfect in reality, and it wasn't here. Twilight tip toes through problems more often than not. She is not confrontational. I believed her performance. I think the cast acted realistically to themselves, true to their character. Communication seemed to be the big bad of the episode. Which is why Starlight indeed would've ended the episode before it began. She is abrasive, and forthcoming. If you messed up, she will tell you where, why, and how. But she'll also give you a reason to get over it. She'll berate you with a purpose, and will help you with your problem as well as she points out you have one. I think my final verdict would be that I liked it, for all its flaws it was fun, a mix between an episode you'd see in the show's early days, and the stuff we often get today. I think I let my hype get away from me. Knowing it was a Pinkie episode, with Pinkamena, I expected too much. Upon other viewings I found the fun in it, and I can happily say it isn't in anyway a terrible episode. Not great, but it's fun, I like it.

I have very mixed feelings about this episode. Pinkie Pie has been shown with this flaw before of not realizing how her actions are affecting other ponies due to her getting carried away. This was showed in the parasprite episode (in which this episode feels like a rehashing of that one), Pinkie Pride, Filli Vanilli and now again here. While i realize this could be a fluttershy situation of her needing several episodes to learn to be a little more aware, only 2 of the 4 mentioned actually addressed the problem in the episode, that being the parasprite one and pinkie pride. Whenever Pinkie presents this kind of flaw, half the time it puts any other character as the ones in the wrong and not her. THAT being said, the other mane 5 was also a problem here. The lesson of learning to listen to your friends even if they dont make sense is one we have seen before, but also the fact that they took SO long to realize what was happening and why she was upset really got to me. It felt very out of character for most of them (mainly Twilight and Applejack), especially when it was staring them in the face for half of the episode and they acted like Pinkie HAD to be good at the instrument to play it. The way they went about telling her she was being disruptive was very poorly done and after 8 seasons, they should know how to communicate better by now. It felt like the plot was very forced and in the end Pinkie didnt even learn anything. The lesson to me felt like it was "stopping your friends from doing what they love hurts them so let them be themselves even if it's disruptive to others." Similar to A Matter of Principals, where they made Starlight the bad guy and put none of the blame on Discord. I dont care if he felt left out, that didn't excuse his actions. If Gallus learned that why didnt Discord. Anyways, getting off track. My biggest problems was how attached Pinkie became to the instrument (telling Maud that without it her life has no meaning and moves to Yak Yakistan? Really? That seemed very over-dramatic and thrown in to make the mane 5 realize the problem was serious) and how the mane 5 handled her playing. The only reason Pinkie was a small problem for me in this episode was because it didnt show her learning how to do what she likes without disrupting others. Anyways that's my rant, and i would love your feedback on this, Luffy as out of all reactors i get the most un-baised views from you (no offense to other reactors) Edit: Also i would agree that Twilight was a problem but the other mane 4 were RIGHT. THERE> They could have noticed she worded it badly and instead agreed with her. Twilight was just the one who voiced it. I wrote this rant without reading other comments so if i repeat what someone else said, i apologize.

Im not saying he shouldnt be chaotic but there is a clear line to be drawn especially when it puts students in danger. And he crossed a huge line with me about bringing up Starlights past and using it against her. That wasn't chaotic, that was cruel. In the past he has caused disruptions without being TOO rude to the mane 6 directly (he has a weird sense of humor, usually doing things for a laugh) But he was downright cruel towards starlight for absolutely no reason just because she was Temporary Head Mare over him. My problem wasnt that he was causing chaos, but that his actions put others in danger and he was doing it only to be cruel to Starlight. But this is my opinion. @@kristingordon1364 Discord is always chaotic in some way. And did you really forget Diacordant Harmony where he was literally *fading from existence* because he wasn`t being chaotic? Not being chaotic is outright lethal to him. Now, to make my point more in detail: Remember back when Discord joined forces with Tirek, much because the mane 6 treated him like shit in general? Keep in mind the amazing bonding moment he had with the mane 6 back then when he realized just how important friendship is and gave Twilight her key. And here we are 4 seasons later ( and possibly more years than that) where he does not even get invited to the opening of the school. Nor is it even apparently mentioned by Fluttershy during their tea time. Starlight, his old "save Equestria buddy" as she herself put it, who was reformed nearly 3 seasons (and years) after him and who actually was more of a threat than him, is essentially already the mane 6`s fuckbuddy and gets trusted with being in charge. On top of that even she ignored him, didn`t invite him, and rejected his ideas ( which actually were good and *optional* ) And people try to claim he has no reason to be pissed at them…..cute. As for people claiming the students were innocent, they were witnesses to someone who clearly was upset about something and none of them pointed out the painfully obvious. So they were just as guilty as Starlight and the mane 6. And they were not in any real danger. This was not the case even when he was a villain and "evil" so why would it suddenly be now? That Bugbear would likely turn into balloons or something the moment it made contact. And as the writer pointed out, Discord was messing with Starlight in order to prove she was not perfect for the job either. Which she proved him correct on by basically sending a Kamehameha to his face for basically giving her a middle finger. Not really fitting for the boss of an establishment that preaches friendship is it?

Its a show don't till episode... They show the 2 wrong ways to do things... And do the compromise at the end... We know wot is up but this is a show for kids and they still need to learn... Its a great comedy for adults like you and me and a great lesson for kids... That should be the take a way here.

All things considered, I did like this episode. It kept me interested in the plot even though the story seemed to drag a bit but otherwise it seemed okay to me.

The episode was okay I suppose. Had issues and I perosnally wasn't that thoroughly entertained. Its also a bit too familiar for its own good like a later episode this season yet I find this one to be executed much more poorly rather than that one(regardless of how the fandom feels about the later episode which I will get into when you reach it). This one's a big "eh" for reasons you've already stated. I had no big issue with it but I also don't see much to really praise either. After the first instance of yaks and Pinkie, the episodes that followed her and her relationship with yak culture are rather dull and this episode certainly isn't an exception. The rest of the episodes after this one are pretty good though with only one controversial one

Yeah, this was another meh episode for me. For the princess of friendship, that was kind of a bitchy thing of Twilight to say lol. Good to hear that you found a way to avoid the spoilers. I never knew about this plugin, and you better believe the second you brought it up I searched it and now I no longer have a recommendations bar or a home page. No more sub watchers ruining Attack on Titan for me. 👌

I'm not going to lie I'm very much one of the people that hates this episode out of the entire series I don't hate any episode except for this one and honestly it's not with any of the characters it's with the writers because the way Pinkie Pie was acting this episode didn't feel like Pinkie Pie's character at least to me and the way the other characters were acting didn't feel in character either like Twilight knows better this episode feels like it should have been away for a back in the show but not in the season before the final ending of the show

That's the common problem with a lot of the controversial episodes in the later seasons. There's a common theme for them that screams "we were sitting on this idea many seasons ago, and finally had the chance to use it", which sometimes causes the portrayals of the characters to clash with how far they've developed since then.

" Dear Princess Celestia today one of my best friends found a new hobby playing an instrument unfortunately she's not very good at it and disrupts me, my friends and the rest of Ponyville with how loud and poorly I think she's playing. Even though I know how sensitive Pinkie is and that she's my friend instead of telling her that her playing is bothering our everyday tasks ad annoying us and how we should compromise on where she should play in order to practice I said nothing and told her to stop playing because she sucked. Surprisingly she didn't take it very well and became depressed we tried to cheer her up by trying to force her to do the stuff that she loves instead of asking what's wrong I decided to wait until she left Ponyville so instead of finally telling her that her playing was bothering us and maybe she should practice somewhere else I just told Pinkie to keep playing. Yours Truly Princess Twilight Sparkle" Princess Celestia face palms so do I Twilight I love you but you really goofed up it really stings seeing your favourite do something so stupid she's my favourite of the main 6 and I can't stay disappointed in her because she's always done amazing things and ben a great friend just this time she messed up. It's gonna happen she's not perfect but in this case I wish she knew better Despite the backlash Twilight's gotten this season I think despite the downs she's still an amazing friend and princess. Not the best episode of the season but not the worst that title goes to Non Complete Clause. ( I really hope what I said made sense and that it doesn't upset anyone)

Luffyiscool thank you I actually replied and agreed with you on your thoughts on this episode on Twitter it really pains me to see Twilight like this and had me wince but this was a big mistake that I hope she doesn’t make again even though she wasn’t at her best in this episode it doesn’t take away from all the times when she was at her best and amazing just this one is unfortunately more jarring but it’s not the worst episode ever

I've always felt like episodes like this just aren't very realistic. Like. Yea they worded it poorly, but pinkie had zero interest in saying she wanted to keep playing? I feel like both sides are at fault. You SHOULD be honest when you think a friend is going to make a fool out of themselves. And pinkie should have had no complains by responding to twilights words with "maybe, but I still like doing it, so maybe I'll just do it alone." Friends shouldn't be scared of being honest with each other.

Luffyiscool I get that, but I feel like this is something she's never really fixed about herself. Everyone had flaws when they were in S1, including Pinkie. I thought she got over this back then and then REALLY got over it with the Cheese Sandwhich episode. Feels like she's re-learning the same.
@luffyiscool

Well to me, it's more it's a part of her base personality, which is harder to overcome than other kinds of faults. Like how Rainbow struggles with her pride, Fluttershy struggles with confidence, etc If it's related to the base personality, then it's so hard to fix and definitely can't be patched up in one lesson. It's like how, even in the season 8 finale, they addressed in the dialogue that Twilight had only just "finally" learned to count on others. For me, Pinkie is the same. Her difficult to overcome flaw is her childish nature, and the way she takes other people's words straight to heart. Just like in real life, there are certain behaviours that don't have an easy fix, no matter how many times you suffer consequences for them. On some level I actually kinda respect that MLP does this, and they even addressed this in season 7 when Fluttershy said it takes more than one lesson to completely change who you are.

This episode hurt me and doesn't really make a whole lot of sense in the grand scheme of things. I mean Pinkie Pie gets upset because she isn't allowed to play an instrument? She interrupted ponies daily lives, and could have seriously hurt Rainbow and the Wonderbolts when they were flying. She can still get good at the instrument if she asked someone, maybe a Yak teach her how to play, she doesn't have to quit playing; she should just play somewhere where she's not interrupting ponies lives, which she was. Plus the fact that this episode is pretty much pointless in the sense that she so loved her beloved instrument? Yeah we never see it again after this. Edit: Pinkie wasn't the only one in the wrong, Twilight was as well; especially with how she told Pinkie to just stop playing instead of telling her something like we love you learning something new, but you aren't that good at it right now or something like that, why don't you ask a yak to teach you how to play? Or something of that nature.
@luffyiscool

Those middle two points are why Twilight annoyed me in this episode. She told Pinkie "stop playing because you're not good" and.... that was it. No mention of the noise disturbance or anything. Very poor wording on her part. No effort to ask for a compromise of any kind, which I'm sure Pinkie would have listened to.
