The part where he said you cant just let him back on the crew cause he was disrespectful came out of nowhere for me. Like I knew Zoro was serious about being a pirate but he is also serious about not putting up with anybody's bullshit even if they're friends or crewmates. His reasoning was sound and he was dead serious about leaving if luffy just let usopp come back like it was nothing. He was like YOU are the captain of this crew not usopp and he flat out not only disrespected your decision he fought you over it. That kind of nonsense can't be forgotten and forgiven so easily if you're being serious about being a pirate captain

I find this fight to be kind of ironic. When Zoro and Sanji, two of the serious characters in the crew fight each other, its played up for laughs. But when Luffy and Usopp, two of the biggest goofballs in crew fight each other, it has a lot of serious and emotional weight into it.

It's part of the crouching idiot hidden badass trope, when idiotic comedians get into a serious fight, then you know it's heavy because their role is to be lighthearted. It's like in digimon where the digimon fights are cool but not serious, but as soon as the human kids start fighting other human kids you know things are legit serious. The tone shift throws the entire story for a loop

@darknesswave100

Yeah I think that was just as much a reason for the fight as anything. I honestly had more respect for Usopp after this fight. Cause he felt useless and weak but he actually did really well against luffy considering he had been beaten up so badly beforehand by the franky family. He wasnt gonna win regardless but that didnt stop him from going all out
@mingchen7704

let's be honest, him, Nami and Chopper have become a joke at that point. but unlike Nami and Chopper. his role of sniper really doesn't amount to much. as there is not that many naval combats. and his role as a "ship weight" may had been, in his own view, his only contribution to the crew. but when the news of all his hard work of "repairing" marry also amounted to nothing. I think that really started to send him into a downward spiral. there is a reason why after water 7. Usopp become far more useful. burning the flag and shooting the keys to Robin must have really helped his confidence, and let him find his place on the crew. and once he realize why he was important, he begins to really grow and become far more deadly and powerful of a member than he was before.

Can we just take a second to appreciate that One Piece was able to have two of their main characters fight each other with all of their strength *without* having it be because of some bullshit reason like "they used to be best friends but one got "possessed by greed" and turned eeeeevil ooooooohhh". Although Ussop was desperately fighting for something he knew was beyond saving, it doesn't change the fact that both were fighting for things that made sense and neither inherently evil because of it.

Annd them the whole cake arc happened and we got the sanji bs vs Luffy i was soo mad at Oda for that, i dropped the manga until the end of the arc. Not that i dindt understand the why he wrote like that, but it just felt missplaced especially after this particular fight with usop, it laked the weight, the emotion, and most the reasoning, Merry was to Usop what the strawhat was to luffy a treasure. After all they went through, the fact that he couldnt trust is captain, even when they almost died in enies lobby and them Kuma, watching Sanji beating down Luffy without a fight back, just felt manipulative, and all he got from that was a cold shoulder from nami for 5 minutes, while Usopp had his whole world crashing down once he understood what he throwed away.

Just remind people that Usopp was beaten up TWICE in the same day before fighting Luffy. Also Usopp never moved from where he stood when fighting. Plus Usopp is really durable so the fight honestly would've went on longer if Usopp wasn't injured and could actually move around. Usopp's kinda like Midoriya, just with no power. You'd figure after all this time "observing" (!!) fights all the time, he'd have some experience stored up. If he were to engage enemies with some background knowledge, he'd probably be a pretty capable fighter, but I guess he'll just keep being the joke coward character forever.

Phazz but the thing is ussop isnt some tank all it takes is someone to hit him fatally and hes gone unlike zoro or luffy. I don't think it was so much that Usopp had a real plan though, he just knew Luffys personal weaknesses. Those tricks he pulled wouldn't have worked on everyone, they only did because he's seen Luffy fight so much, and knew that Luffy wouldn't go all out on him, which you even see him capitalize on in the fight when he pretends to be in serious pain. All this isn't to down Usopp in any way though. I think he's still a brilliant strategist, and the fact that he was able to hurt Luffy at all was a feat all on its own as a normal human.

It was heartbreaking. A culmination of two friends communicating poorly and emotions flaring up. Usopp was beaten up twice earlier that day, and at this lowest point, was told that his beloved Merry wouldn't be able to sail. He was afraid it was the same for a fighter who wasn't able to fight, and his inferiority complex burned him hard. Luffy, on the other hand, was carrying the safety of his crew on his back, and had both time and a beatdown on Franky House to calm down. Both sides had the power of friendship and both sides lost.

You have to remember that Luffy has a monkey brain in most aspects of life, except fighting and leadership. He is an actual genius when it comes to fighting and is a great leader instinctively. Luffy's ability to adapt on the fly and be creative in a fight is the second most broken thing about him [the first being his charisma]. So props to Usopp for the big-brain strategy, but there is no way he was winning. Even if he had days to prep more ammo [pepper, cactus, tabasco etc.], he would still lose despite doing more damage. Luffy also has an absurd tolerance for pain, so tabasco, pepper and like would not slow him down for long, despite the absurd amount of pain. Furthermore, with his battle experience and sheer physical superiority, it would be weird if he didn't dodge the shuriken shot from further away [even without gear second] when he can dodge bullets shot from a lot closer [celestial dragon at Sabaody]. --- This is my opinion on the fight. But damn it still stings every time I watch it again. P.S. Really enjoyed the video man! Sorry about the long asf comment.

That moment when Luffy and Ussop are arguing about Luffy's decision to get a new ship and tells Ussop that the Merry can't be repaired. The way the anime cut away as Luffy said it, then Ussop makes him say it again. The weight it hits with when it lands. Clearly Luffy is heart broken over the decision. However, in his own selfish anger, Ussop doesn't even register it when Luffy tells him the first time. The anime shows us this by cutting away. Then it comes back and Luffy says to Ussop that the Merry can't be fixed. Then it becomes real. The Merry isn't a ship but a friend who is dying. Merry has push herself beyond her limits for the crew she loved. Man, it had been a long time since anything had hit me that hard.

Usopp forgot how much the Going Merry means to Luffy. For as smart as Usopp is, he really didn't take it into account for one second "Is he REALLY okay with giving up Merry?" when Luffy is going on about getting a new ship. No. No, he's not. He feels a lot of guilt because he knows Merry is like this mainly because of HIM. She absolutely wouldn't survive the Grand Line HOWEVER she didn't necessarily have to die at the point in time that she did had he and the crew taken better care of her. They knew they weren't shipwrights and yet they were still careless with her. That's why Luffy tells Merry "If anyone should be apologizing it's us." Usopp's big mistake, the real reason he didn't win this fight, is because he really thought he was the only one that cared for Merry. He didn't respect the fact that yes he patched up Merry, yes he saw her Klabautermann, but Luffy was the one charge of her care and the one Merry the ship-builder gave the ship to. Luffy loved Merry just as much as him, but *Luffy* is thinking of what's good for Merry, not Usopp.
@TacoTheHuman
@TacoTheHuman 2 жыл бұрын
I think Usopp knew that Luffy cared about Merry just as much, but he took it extremely personally because he helped so much with keeping Merry afloat and still she wasn't good enough for the grand line. The fact that Luffy seemed willing to let her go so easy made Usopp feel inadequate himself, as if he wasn't good enough either. He didn't have as much faith in himself as the crew had in him, so he figured he'd eventually get thrown out just as easy. At least, that's what I would assume based on his reaction.

I get that he's somewhat of a comic relief character, but I remember watching this fight and seeing the vast combat potential our sniper held within. And Luffy being forced to demand respect as a Captain, even though this meant going against essentially one of his absolute best friends was heart wrenching.

The background for this fight is so heavy, the challenge of becoming a true captain breakdown, gaining more strenght as Aokiji made clear, not being a spoiled child as Iceberg made clear, the help from Sanji always keeping an eye on the mood of the crew, Zoro supporting Luffy through the arc to digest the necessary changes to become a true leader. Just awesome.

Here’s a thought I think you might like Tekking! ^_^ What if Usopp had a bunch of impact dials and combined them together to make like a chain mail type set of armour made out of impact dials? He would basically have a set of armour that could absorb an enormous amount of damage. Haven’t quite thought of how you could re-disperse the energy from that damage but I’m sure it’s do-able. ^_^ “Edit” Now that I think of it he could straight up make a MCU style black panther suit that absorbs and re distributes damage. That would be pretty OP in my opinion. ^_^

So I was watching the horo horo no mi video and realised how legit great it would be for usopp to really bring out his traits. A: he is usually already not on the battlefield, the horo horo no mi would allow usopp to use party trick techniques in the thick of it while being intangible. Possibly an awakening or strong observation would allow him to control his projection and body at the same time as long as he can see, so his opponents think he is an intangible God but he's miles away sniping them to dead The ability to summon hollows would play right into usopps lie of having thousands of men as well as giving him lots of extra espionage options. Imagine how wano would go if usopp used a negative hollow on Kaido, hits him with a massive one and Kaido just be like . Man life sucks I'm gonna drink and kill myself... Oh wait no

@@LastGREATEST0 Not really Oda put a lot of emphasis on the fact that Usopp has to do it, or they're done for. Sugar about to touch a clueless Luffy and Law, or Perona getting them all hopelessly depressed including Robin. All she has to do when they're all captured is just cycle her ghost through them continuously then off them. The way that Franky Sanji and Zoro all booked it when they saw that Usopp actually had a chance to fight Perona shows. I'm pretty sure that Oda made those two characters to show that Usopp is necessary for the adventure.

As the captain Luffy has an authority. I wish they would bring that up at least one more time. If Luffy orders the crew to do something and he refuses to back down on that decision they have no choice but to obey. The only other choice is leaving the crew. That is what you accept when you join a pirate crew. That you are under the authority of the captain.

Yeah! Actually, that tense build-up episode brought me back to One Piece when it aired the first time on TV (Germany). Back then, I read the manga from the beginning, many years before the anime appeared. Life happened, duties, social life, etc. and I stopped One Piece in the mids of the Alabasta Arc. One day I zapped through the TV list and this Water 7 moment just happens. Knowing everything about the crew up until the mids of Alabasta and suddenly this heavy scene pops into my life. No music and this awkward feeling while they discuss the Merry... Damn, since then I'm totally back into OP, so frickin many years... It's crazy to follow a series for nearly 20 years and it's still on-going xD One Piece and Detective Conan, damn frickin sh*t...
