NYC Subway: Downtown (1) Express Ride

Күн бұрынBecause of construction, on the weekend of May 9/10 all Downtown (1) trains ran express from 96th Street to Times Square-42nd Street.
This stretch is actually one of my favorite express runs in the entire system. There seems to be no speed limit here and trains usually go pretty fast. The best way to experience this express is on board one of the old R62/R62A trains, such as this (1) train.
I filmed this handheld, so unfortunately the video got a little bit shaky. These R62 cars do have a rough ride (which makes for all the fun though). :-)

I have been living in Las Vegas since 2008. I was 18 when I finally moved out NYC. But these are sounds that I will never forget. It will forever play in my head and even played in my dreams some nights. Like I'll still be taking the damn subway with my friends from Vegas instead. It's funny and weird. I'm assuming taking the train was definitely a huge part of my life.

Damn...I miss home. I remember riding that stretch from 72nd to 42nd on the Redbirds. This was when there was no speed restrictions heading into 42nd so we would hit this station at about 40 mph.

One time when I visited NYC, I had to ride the (1) train (in normal local service) to get from South Ferry (after disembarking from the Staten Island Ferry) to midtown (I think to go to Rockefeller Center). Somewhere, I think maybe 18th or 23rd street station, the train was loading passengers, and a (3) train FLEW by on the express track. It was awesome; I wish I had taken video, as my camera was in my lap at the time, but I think the (3) train caught me by surprise, or I was just worried that people would freak out if I was filming (luckily that's never happened to me).

I definitely agree about this particular express section being so fast, especially when a downtown express train is bypassing 50th Street (I feel like that part is actually slightly downhill). Too bad the timers south of there kill the speed...for good reasons of course.

AxisX7 what reason is it? I always enjoy that Express ride, but they always slow down passing 50th street to 42nd (Downtown local does almost the same thing).

Yeah the trip between 96th and 72nd as well as 72nd and 42nd is what I call: "the real express trip"

DJEDI296 the train in this video is a old(1980's) R62A there are no automated maps on this train just regular subway maps and the conductor announces every stop and transfer point the newer trains(R142,R142A,R160,R179,R188) ARE ALMOST FULLY AUTOMATED EXCEPT THE CONDUCTOR STILL HAS TO OPEN AND CLOSE THE DOORS AND THE OPERATOR STILL HAS TO DRIVE BUT THEY ARE TRYING TO HAVE SOME TRAINS DRIVE BY THEMSELF

DJEDI296 The R62/R62A subway cars are just like the Redbird trains R26, R28, R29, R33WF, R33ML and R36's. Except that the R62/R62A subway cars are stainless steel and the Redbird trains are not.

richie bee Pretty soon the R62 and R62A trains will be retired. I hope that they put these old trains together with the Redbird trains in the museum along with some other older cars like the R40 slants and R32 cars.

Luftschlange your videos are good , a couple of questions Do you think the v and w train should run for the ind 6 avenue and bmt broadway line, that the m or z train should be extended to 4th avenue in Brooklyn, that the 5 train should be extended instead of running a shuttle line in the Bronx and should the G train be extended to the Forest Hills 71 Avenue

Ahzeem Evans The (V) Cannot Run Via The 6th Ave Line Because It Clogs Up Service With The (F) & (M). The (W) Might Come Back Once The (Q) Goes To 96 St, Idk About The (Z) Going To 4th Ave In Brooklyn, The (5) Is Fine As It Is & The (G) Cannot Extend To Forest Hills As It Will Clog The (M) & (R).

I love how the 3 bus (Burnet/Manchaca SB) in Austin is more crowded than the subway in this video, you can't even move without bumping into somebody or stepping on somebody's foot.

On some lines expresses only operate in rush hours in the dominant direction of travel. On the 7, for example, the expresses run toward Manhattan in the morning, and toward Flushing in the afternoon/evening. Middays, late nights, and weekends the middle (Express) track is not used, except to allow a local track to be taken out of service for maintenance, like the 1 in this video. The flexibility of the New York subway is unusual in rapid transit systems, but makes it possible for the subway to run 24 hours a day.

Reginald Bostic You can go to New York and ride it. But this is unusall to run express as a 1 train. So if you do go to New York, it will run local as it always does
