I don't like this scene at all. It makes no sense that there is no sense of warmth there, just matter of fact behavior. It doesn't add up to the storyline for decades. The writers goofed.

Exactly because I remember when I was younger I was a Luke and Laura fan but I grew up and found out how they got together I was like no. Still don't get the hype till this day. I don't support that. He raped her but fans don't care SMH

It was a different time and many things were accepted then that would not be now. The love story and Luke’s remorse were played up. I was caught up like everyone else. There was some pushback, and the writers tried to course correct. But the audience was bought into Luke and Laura so the rape was forgiven.

They were going to kill off Luke as a bad guy but the audience loved them together so much they turned the rape into a seduction. But the story gets its fire from the all consuming love Luke had for Laura. It was a forbidden passion that had many obstacles. It worked the audience into a fever pitch. Luke is an anti-hero. He's imperfect as hell but he had ONE love. He was every woman's fantasy. His losing control that night was based on his being extremely drunk and believing he was going to be dead within the month at the hands of the syndicate. He had nothing to lose. He was forgiven almost instantly. You'd have to watch it all to know why. I hope you do. If for nothing else to see it as a study in archetypal imagery, and female psychology wound up in a love story that broke TV viewership records. He won 8 Emmy awards as Luke. His performances were SPECTACULAR. I hope you'll watch.

Yes Luke fell deeply in love with Laura & the night of the infamous scene, he thought he was going to be killed bc he got mixed up in the mob and was ordered to kill someone. His obsession got the best of him or that's how they played it. Laura had already started falling for him before this scene & somehow it just worked. Luke was devastated for what he had done to Laura. She first played it as she didn't know who did it but she was protecting him. They had so much chemistry & after all it was a soap opera & they were both such good actors they made it work.

It was a different time. People had a different mentality. Doesn't make them bad people.
