Yeah, Vader had not thought this through. Vader claims to be Luke's father and wants to rule the galaxy as father and son, but Vader rejects Anakin who was Luke's father. Hearing that Luke's "father" is truly dead made him rethink this situation lol.

Indeed. I had a girl in my graduating class that I antagonized so badly that when I saw her again in 2017-ish she still harbored resentment toward me, and I did not blame her one bit. I did go on to apologize and told her that she could even punch me if she wanted to and I knew I deserved it. But she saw I was sincere and she immediately let go of her resentment toward me and we've been friends ever since. I drop in on her from time to time on FB. Kind words and a sincere apology and a small display of love can break through the strongest barriers of hate and suffering.

Almost like saying “you’re wrong Luke.” And you can see Luke’s confidence in his previous statement falter. For just a second. 2:16 Luke tries to reach Vader again. “Come with me!” And Vader takes him to the Emperor. Luke was wrong there but he still had faith in his father even if there were times of doubt.

I think it was a reminder to Luke of just what he was trying to do. Luke almost sounds cocky when he says that Vader won't take him to the Emperor. Igniting the lightsaber was a reminder to him that he held none of the power in the situation and trying to get to Vader emotionally is a move you have to make very, VERY carefully.

I feel that because Ford became such a big movie star over time people forget about Hamill who didnt do much acting later. It’s unfortunate how both Disney and the Expanded Universe ruined this scene by portraying Vader as a psycho that murders everything that lives instead of a misunderstood villain that, as ruthless he can be with his enemies, can also show diplomacy and compassion for those who are not (civilians, slaves, *children* ), a man who indeed has good in him. I personally would say that it's the best scene in the franchise. The final battle with the Emperor was some good stuff, but I feel like in Vader's mind, this was the moment he subconsciously decided that he'd do anything for his son.

I didn’t quite understand this line. Was Vader afraid of what the Emperor might do to HIM if he betrayed him in favor of Luke?

​@@sean2015 It was a warning, that he didn't want Luke to befall the same fate as he himself did. Vader was telling Luke that the dark side can make you do things that you normally would not. In that moment, Anakin knew what he did all of those years ago and thought there was no turning back. "It is too late for me" implies that he has regret, but he still feels like he can't do anything about it despite his conflicted feelings he has on the inside.

This was a really great scene, because it humanized what was thought to be the most ruthless force in all the galaxy other than the Emperor himself, ending the lives of anyone that stood against him and then here's this kid, directly contradicting the powerhouse and not even being threatened, but fully paid attention to by the dark lord.
