Indeed. I had a girl in my graduating class that I antagonized so badly that when I saw her again in 2017-ish she still harbored resentment toward me, and I did not blame her one bit. I did go on to apologize and told her that she could even punch me if she wanted to and I knew I deserved it. But she saw I was sincere and she immediately let go of her resentment toward me and we've been friends ever since. I drop in on her from time to time on FB. Kind words and a sincere apology and a small display of love can break through the strongest barriers of hate and suffering.

@@crazyman7671 I also have a story about letting go of my hate. I have had been clinging onto hatred since middle school and up to my senior year. In my senior year, I had a lot going on in my life; appendicitis... but there was this one boy. He was someone who was often bullied because he had autism and we weren't friends until the end of senior year. Given I almost lost my life, I had pretty much went under a very big transformation. For years I didn't care about if I was to die, believing I was worthless, and so I reflected myself onto otuers. When I started changing, I have cut off negative "friends" and befriended better people. I never bullied him but I ignored him and allowed my "friends" to bully him which I felt guilty for. Despite this, we both walk the stage on graduation (we were both class of 2023 so this year) and he taught me to realize I should be better. He was not the only one who helped me in redeeming myself but he was one who was quick enough to forgive me when I went through it.

@@Warsie The reason why Vader gets so pissed off when people call him Anakin is because he utterly hates his past self. I love the misdirect when Vader ignites the lightsaber. You think he’s going to attack Luke out of rage and offense at what Luke just said. But it turns out to be a completely harmless gesture, as he just inspects it, then turns it off again almost immediately, and engages in a very human and intimate conversation with Luke. A small moment that subtly indicates so much. He doesn’t want to hurt Luke and he is no longer as much of a threat to Luke as he used to be.

@@taramaforhaikido7272 if you didn’t feel that particular way that’s cool. I’m sure there are people who didn’t. I know for a lot of a fact a lot of people were startled for a second just like Luke was when he heard the saber ignite. Also Luke’s goal was NOT to meet the Emperor. It was to talk to Vader and convince him to redeem himself. Luke says this himself 1:32 to 1:45 “I know there is good in you… the Emperor hasn’t driven it from you fully. It’s why you couldn’t destroy me. That’s why you WON’T take me to the Emperor now.” Vader responds by igniting the saber. Almost like saying “you’re wrong Luke.” And you can see Luke’s confidence in his previous statement falter. For just a second. 2:16 Luke tries to reach Vader again. “Come with me!” And Vader takes him to the Emperor. Luke was wrong there but he still had faith in his father even if there were times of doubt.
@rosePetrichor
@rosePetrichor 11 ай бұрын
I think it was a reminder to Luke of just what he was trying to do. Luke almost sounds cocky when he says that Vader won't take him to the Emperor. Igniting the lightsaber was a reminder to him that he held none of the power in the situation and trying to get to Vader emotionally is a move you have to make very, VERY carefully.

I love that fact that it’s pretty clear that the reason Luke has such sway with Vader and is able to shake him to his core so much is because when Vader sees Luke he doesn’t just see his son. Vader sees what he should have been. Luke is what Anakin would have been if he had been trained by Qui-Gon. A Jedi who relies on compassion to fuel his power. A Jedi not blinded by dogma. Vader seemed genuinely hurt by the idea that Luke was more disappointed in him than angry. Hate and anger are emotions Vader knows all too well. They're the Sith's source of power, after all. But disappointment is something else. Luke truly expected better of his father and Vader could not meet those expectations. When Luke says, "Then my father is truly dead", it's out of heartbreak, not outrage. If anyone knows what it means to hurt those you love, it's Anakin. He often hurt those he loved on the path to save them. It isn't until the very end that Vader finally saved someone he truly loved and became the person Luke knew he was.

Do you really realize how amazing it is that Vader's body language is clear as water even though he's entirely armored ? You can clearly feel his emotions under his black suit. I love how calm and confident Luke is at this moment, after being such a rebellous mind on the previous episode. Those two lines : "It is too late for me, son" and... "Then my father is truly dead" ... are a true mark of an incredible writing and scenebuilding.

"It is too late for me son" Is such an important line. Despite what Vader meant, it actually confirms Luke's theory that Vader still had good in him. The rule of two demands there can only be two sith lords at the same time. In Empire, he invites Luke to rule the galaxy as father and son, which would mean he intends to usurp the emperor. David Prowse deserves so much credit for the body acting/ language. Just the slight nod of the head, side ways glance, drop of the shoulders just expresses so much of how he is feeling in response to Luke’s words of disappointment & compassion for his father. I watch this and it makes me abhor the new trilogy so much. How can this Luke so full of love, compassion & hope for his father, who has committed so many ghastly crimes in the name of the Darkside, betray & forget his principles & emotions so easily when it comes to his nephew, who has only up that point shown potential for darkness.

This is a wonderful scene... particularly how Luke completely (emotionally) disarms Vader. Vader is expecting Luke to be the cocky, defiant young rebel he met in Empire... someone who hates him. That Luke has matured and is calm and peaceful and is appealing to Vader's humanity... that was unexpected. It's all there in Jones's vocal performance. He starts off sounding like the antagonistic, hate-filled Vader from a New Hope... and at times, begins to sound like a father talking to his son. That his son is disappointed in him hurts him more than if his son merely hated him. He is too familiar with being hated for that particular emotion to even register.

@@Cailus3542 I hate the *very* recent take that somehow Vader is a separate personality from Anakin. It makes zero sense. There would be no reason for him to hate Obi Wan and the Jedi, to think of Padme, to have resentment against Palpatine, to consider Luke *Skywalker* to be *his* son and to want to have Luke rule at his side if he weren't just Anakin consumed by the Dark Side, which has had zero "split personality" effects on any other Sith Lord that we've seen (Palpatine certainly had no identity crisis).

We can clearly see how there is really a conflict inside Vader. Darth Vader, dark lord of the Sith, usually acts with brutality and with anger. Confident of what he does, harsh with his subordinates. Here, we can clearly see Vader on a depression. He doesn't talks in a fully direct way, nor with a high voice. He is calmed, like bored. When Luke said that there was a conflict within him, a normal Vader would had answered with words of how he is more powerful than ever. But he just says that it is too late for him.

"I know there is good in you..." This probably caught Vader completely off guard. He was most likely expecting Luke to come at him with accusations, about the fate of his mother and himself, killing Obi-Wan, abandoning all the ideals of the Jedi. Vader probably had a speech ready like, "The Jedi were not as righteous and glamorous as you've been told." But instead, Luke addresses him as Anakin and Father, and has a significant amount of hope that he will do the right thing even now. For years he had only been treated as a faceless figure to be feared and appeased by others, or else crushed and humiliated as a slave by the Emperor. But Luke treats him like a real person, and one who has a responsibility to him and to what's right.

What Darth Vader said at 2:51, did he admit that he wishes that he could be good again, but it was too late? If you make mistakes in life, it is never too late to regret them and change yourself for the good. So, Luke was right. There was still good in Darth Vader. It just took him until the end of the movie when Palpatine was electrocuting Luke to realize it.

68corvette08 Omd reading that I just put it all together. The last time he saw him electrocuting somebody was Mace Windu. He probably got a flash-back of that then remembered that soon after he caused Padme's death and couldn't take seeing it again so he killed his "demon" for the sake of his son which if you think about it is a symbol of the love he had for Padme. OMD I'M SO DEPRESSED NOW! LOL

So many nuances in this scene, and not many people mention Mark Hamill's mastery of subtext. The way he looks at Vader after realizing he's going to be turned in - pity and disappointment expressed so well. They could have ended the scene right when the elevator door closed, but it would not have been nearly as impactful if they hadn't shown Vader skulking to the side clearly rattled by the only living person the galaxy who sees right through him.

This is probably the best scene in the whole saga. And the line: "It is too late for me, son" is so chilling. It is because we can all relate to him. The pain, the desire to change and the harsh realization that there is no turning back. That you cannot change yourself and that whatever you do, your past will always haunt you. The beauty of this scene is that this is the tragedy that we all have to face. I for one completely underatand Vader. Well, not being a child murderer, but sometimes the weight of your past is unbearable. And you realize that there is no turning back, nothing you can do, that you have to live with the choices you made and all the pain that comes with that. This is not the tragedy of Darth Vader, but the tragedy we all have to face. Bravo, mister Lucas for this scene alone...

Return of the Jedi is the first Star Wars film I watched in the theater. It haunted me as a seven-year-old boy, and it still haunts me today. This scene is perhaps the most powerful scene of the film. It shows Luke’s maturation, Vader’s realization and acceptance of his lostness, and the power of love and compassion over hate and hard-heartedness. Luke did not know what the future held for his father, but his unyielding love and compassion for him ultimately broke the emperor’s eternal spell over Anakin and saved him from his living death. Luke was an inimitable Jedi and a stronger person and son.

I personally would say that it's the best scene in the franchise. The final battle with the Emperor was some good stuff, but I feel like in Vader's mind, this was the moment he subconsciously decided that he'd do anything for his son.

@@sean2015 It was a warning, that he didn't want Luke to befall the same fate as he himself did. Vader was telling Luke that the dark side can make you do things that you normally would not. In that moment, Anakin knew what he did all of those years ago and thought there was no turning back. "It is too late for me" implies that he has regret, but he still feels like he can't do anything about it despite his conflicted feelings he has on the inside.

@@GothRailfan I didn’t understand the _”It is too late for me, son”_ line either. When you say you’re too late for something, it means you’ really want it or are at least considering it. And I thought the whole point of ROTJ was for Vader to dismiss Luke’s hunch that he feels conflicted inside.

This was the first scene ever that humanizes Vader. When Luke calls him father, he shows pleasant surprise (1:16). Then Luke makes the point about Vader purposely not killing Luke because he couldn’t bring himself to kill his son. It’s like Vader agrees with Luke but wants to change the subject because he feels uncomfortable 1:49. Then he is truly proud that Luke constructed a light saber 2:00. He mentions Obi Wan and you can tell he is remembering him more as the friend that tried to save him 2:21. When he tells Luke “you don’t know the power of the dark side”, I don’t think Vader is bragging. He is essentially saying, you don’t know the how much the dark side has a power over me. 2:27. Then he says it’s too late for me 2:52 which signifies that Vader has thought about it but believes he is too fargone and has so much guilt about the past. Then when Luke tells him that his father is truly dead, Vader is left hurt and deep in thought 3:29. Powerful story telling.

"Show don't tell.." This was a really great scene, because it humanized what was thought to be the most ruthless force in all the galaxy other than the Emperor himself, ending the lives of anyone that stood against him and then here's this kid, directly contradicting the powerhouse and not even being threatened, but fully paid attention to by the dark lord.
