This is an episode that I completed back in May of 2021, but needed to wait until the footage could be cleared for sharing.
After playing with the 1200c for a month or two, I found I was using both the 1200c and 650c on many of my jobs, so I bought them. Not long after, a number of other gaffers in town, who incidentally already own 360c's, bought pairs of 1200c's because they saw the value in these compact but powerful units.

I’m a sound guy. This is the loudest light I have worked with in years. It sounds like a hair dryer on set.

Hey Luke, Big fan of your videos. This video definitely got me over the line when deciding to purchase the Dyno1200c. I have a couple of questions regarding the 45 degree junior adaptor you're using in this video @ 6:12. What's the payload of the stand you're loading the Dyno on? My strongest wind-ups at the moment only take 30kg & Would you recommend this set-up, or would a small menace arm with a counter weight be better suited? Cheers, Corey

Good questions. If I want the unit lower than a regular crank stand, I’m not against putting it in a regular low-boy combo, but that is not a particularly beefy stand😬 If I could afford the room I’m my truck and on most of the sets I work on I would prefer to use a Roadrunner stand or the lower version of that, the BOA. Matthews and Avenger make beefy cranks too. Instead I usually opt for the Matthews Mini Vator Crank Stand. It has an 80lb load capacity. I do my best to have one leg under the weight, especially if the offset is being used. Alan Steinheimer, Dave Bunge, and no doubt others have modified Modern’s offset so that the center of gravity of the head sits better over the center of the stand. I would recommend against using a short menace with counter weight… the head tends to twist a bit even in the offset.

Hey Luke, would you do a video explaining with examples the differences and use for Magic Cloth. Am wondering how much of it is just “marketing bs” vs other comparable rags. Much thanks! Have learned much from this channel

Hmmm… are you wondering because you have other fabrics and would like to know if it’s worth purchasing? Magic Cloth is to diffusers what ultrabounce is to bounces, you can make the light even softer with double breaks or whatever, but your quality of the spread of light is at the upper end of the scale compared to other fabrics, like lighter grids. In many cases it may provide too little light transmission, which is why it’s good to have some other choices… like lighter grids.

By "upper end of the scale" you mean? Also curious if your thoughts, experience with Magic Cloth has changed since the time of this video? Thank you!

I just meant that in my mind a fabric like half soft frost is on the lower end of softness and has more light transmission, whereas magic cloth (similar to voodoo cloth and Halo cloth) is on the upper end of softness and has less light transmission. 1/2 grid would be in the middle. Those are three good fabrics to half available both to have more or less transition and more or less softness.

I have a Nova 300c in my Kit and a Nova 600c on preorder do you think there is a benefit to switching to Nanlux for bigger units than the Nova 300c?

If you have a 300c, the 600c will be a good companion and will allow you to control them both with Sidus. If you don’t have a large number of units there is value in staying within a family of units.

I don’t think it would replace your M18, my since this footage was shot, Nanlux came out with a 1200 watt LED called the Evoke that would give an M18 and have a fresnel option😉
