🎹 A lot of Berlin school is based on drones or very rarely changes the chords used in the music. Today we cover a way to use global transposition to allow us to apply most chord progressions available in or key to any Berlin School patterns we have playing on the fly. It's great for improv and exploring while composing as well as adding interest when performing on stream or live.
Have fun!

great configuration! i believe you can even map this into simply to a dedicated track inside ableton so you don’t even need an extra controller and you can map it into scenes

You could do one on each track for every transposition an automated with envelopes within the track clips? I’ve been looking for a simple way to do it, if you can figure it out share it back!

I'm on studio one as a DAW, I like that transposer plugin it's cool idea. I either have to play it or sequence it in a piano roll.

Cool ideas! I haven't used a midi controller for a while but I feel like getting two simple ones for this purpose. Do you think a Beatstep Pro would do the job as well as the Keith McMillen?

@@synthseeker - Funny. I actually just had the same question. I recently got a Vermona PerFourMer Synth I absolutely love and saw a lot of videos from Mike Forsling (kzfaq.info) and was wondering how he did the transposition of all synths at once. Well - this video perfectly explains it - thank you Synth Seeker. :)

Hooktheory is good and very helpful for a too-lazy-to-learn music theory dunce like me. Thanks for this tutorial, I'm going to try it in a piece I'm building in Drambo right now. I notice that the Ableton scale control has a "Transpose" option - could that be mapped instead?
@synthseeker
@synthseeker 2 жыл бұрын
I think that does chromatic transposition instead of diatonic…but you could try it and see. I’ll check it this evening as well. :)

Hello. Can you explain this a bit more? You are transposing with 12 semitones but counting in the scale degrees of 8 so the i is correct but the Vii etc is not. Or I am not understanding music theory correctly. Thank you for any explanation.

Because we're using a keyboard to map midi notes to a transposition knob, the range is -12 to +12, but when we try to use chord progression expressed as scale degrees, we use the scale degree names...of which there are seven. Does that help? Maybe ask your question another way?

I have really been enjoying your channel on Berlin School and am having a lot of fun with it- THANKS! W.r.t. using a controller to switch keys for all the seqs, I think this is what Klaus Schulze was doing in this video (first occurrence around 1:10) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jcyJjcle2LHJiZ8.html

Nice video, that is a great looking performance...I've never seen that one! He might have been doing some transposition, or just changing the latched word. I can't be sure.
