Wonderful movie. The great Sidney Poitier played a teacher to this class of teenage kids in a tough London neighborhood. They called him “Sir”. Lulu had a big role in the film as one of the students and sang this song to his character. This song is magic! One of the best film songs ever!

Speaking of Sidney, I know and worked with his Great Nephew on a job few years ago. One day, I noticed his last name, and I asked, "are you related to Sidney?" Avery stated that he is my Great Uncle. If you see Avery and Sidney side by side, you can see that they are definitely related! Avery stated that he met his famous uncle once at a family reunion.

SHE WASN'T IN LIVE WITH HIM, BUT APPRECIATIVE OF HIS GUIDANCE. The class were the "bad" students, and he had such class and grace. He expected them to be better people and they became better people. It is a great movie -- also called "To Sir with Love."

It was a wholesome movie. He didn't have an affair with her or any other student. He just taught them about life and how to prepare for adulthood the right way. Much like Michelle Pfeiffer in Dangerous Minds from the 90's. To Sir With Love was the OG Classic version of that. Her song is basically just thanking him for doing what he was supposed to do as a teacher - prepare them for life afterwards.

The movie was also a twist on Blackboard Jungle from the 50s, in which Sidney Poitier played one of the "bad" students in a class taught by Glenn Ford's character, and was the first "rock & roll movie" (Rock Around The Clock was the theme song). A decade later in To Sir With Love, Poitier was essentially playing Ford's character, plus being a black man teaching a white class was a commentary on the times (civil rights).

....."To Sir With Love" is the title track of a movie starring Sidney Poitier as a new black teacher who arrives at a tough high school in the London slums in 1967. It's the story of how he wins their respect and the singer, Lulu, was cast as one of the students. The song is about how they grew to respect him..... 😇

This was not an inappropriate teacher student love story. it was a growing respect for a teacher by the class. It was a open school and some rowdy kids learning about life. They started causing trouble in class until he taught them how to think for themselves and to think about others. Lulu was one of those students in the film.

This is the title song to the 1967 movie of the same name. Lulu was in the film with Sidney Poitier - she got the gig after director James Clavell saw her open a show for The Beach Boys. At first she had just a small role in the movie, but Clavell was so impressed with her that he expanded her role and had her sing the theme. The film stars Poitier as a high school teacher who has a big impact on his unruly students. Lulu plays one of his students, and sings this song to him at the end of the film as the students show their appreciation for the teacher. Lulu is a charismatic Scottish singer known for her moving rendition of this song. She was born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Laurie (one source cites "Lawrie" as the spelling). She also sang the title song for the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. From 1969 to 1973, Lulu was married to pop star Maurice Gibb. >> This was Billboard's single of the year for 1967, having been #1 for five weeks in the USA. However in Lulu's native UK it was only ever a B-side to her #11 hit "Let's Pretend." (Songfacts.com)

The music biz (ha!) Is so totally driven by money and product these days. Almost everything is computerized and few people write most pop songs so its cookie cutter crap. And the younger bands make almost no money because of streaming. Meanwhile, concert prices plus handling charges are insane and now the damn record companies want some of the money for t shirts or and promo items from the band. So I paid 14 bucks back in the day for a record but concert tickets cost 6 to 9 bucks, parking was a couple of bucks and very low handling fees. I'm not a fan of Taylor but she does have a good business sense. Maybe her pissed off fans can help take down ticket master/ Live nation. It's ridiculous.

Some day people are going to learn to appreciate and enjoy a great song and great talent without bashing others. And in the 1960's when Lulu was singing this song, an awful lot of older Americans were saying HOW THE CURRENT MUSIC WAS NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS THE MUSIC OF THEIR DAY. It's what people do.
@debjorgo
@debjorgo Жыл бұрын
@@keng4847 "...were saying HOW THE CURRENT MUSIC WAS NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS THE MUSIC OF THEIR DAY." Not as much, by this time. Early '50s Rock and Roll with "You ain't nothing but a Hound Dog", "Great Balls of Fire" and "Tutti Fruti" were taking a lot of hits from the older generation. But Rock and Pop had gotten a whole lot more mature by the mid-sixties. With the Beatles and Sgt. Pepper, even some classical music fans were coming on board.

When Columbia Pictures executives saw the film they did'nt like it so the film was given very little advertising. Word of mouth made the film a world wide hit. In New York it played for month's. From this film onward everyone new who "Sir" was. When President Obama, presented Sydney Poitier with the medal of Honour he was introduced as Sir. If you find the time you should watch the film. In the movie, it wasn't LuLu's character who falls in [romantic] love with "Sir" the teacher (Sidney Poitier) but the whole class he was teaching. There is a suggestion that one of the other girls (the 'cute' one) was developing a romantic interest in him, but the theme of the movie is that the whole class fell in love with him because of the model of behavior he had given them. It was really a wonderful movie you should watch!!

It's the love/respect of a student to a teacher. He believed in them. Taught them right from wrong. Respect. And expected that from them in return. Was preparing them for adulthood.

I had kids in Show Choir soooo I had to suffer through "Glee", then loved the show and singing. When they did this cover in the tv show, gotta admit tear or two since I saw the movie as a kid. I was blessed to have a teacher like that in high school

The British were far more open earlier to integration than the Us... Portiers performance in "To Sir with Love" brilliant... wish you had watched the video with scenes from the movie...

Kids of all races went to the same schools in California in the 1960s and earlier. My mother went to high school in the 1940s and one of her good friends was a black girl in her class.

Apologies if someone already said this: This song is from the film “To Sir With Love,” 1967. It stars Sidney Poitier as a new teacher coming in midway through the year into an inner city London school full of poor and out of control kids everyone has given up on. The kids are mostly White and Poitier is their new Black teacher, it was a time in the UK where there was a lot of violent racism. The kids are horrible to “Sir,” they are racist, they threaten him etc… But he persists and doesn’t give up on them. It starts t have an effect on the kids who have never had anyone care about them or assume they could accomplish something. Lulu plays one of the students and Sir helps her discover an interest in learning and she shows her the courage to not be afraid to admit she is smart. At the graduation party, the kids give Sir a gift and surprise him with Lulu singing this song to him… I’m tearing up writing this… The film is wonderful. As a half Black half White kid, my mum made me watch it when I was a kid and it had a big effect on me.
