She went from merely getting fired from her hourly pay job to life in prison! Some People are stupid!

It mystifies me , when stories are told by neighbors who hear the thumps, screams, requests for help and general bludgeoning that last for the better part of an hour and say to themselves or others , "meh".

I can't believe the apple store workers didn't call the police. That's insane. If I heard a woman screaming and many accompanying sounds, I'd be calling 911.

Why would the Lululemon Management Team encourage their employees to confront one another for stealing? That is a horrible idea to put employees in danger of conflict with each other. I hope Jana’s family sued Lululemon. As I see them as having culpability.

I met Jayna a few years before she was murdered. I was (am) friends with her older brother. She was a delightful human. She is missed terribly by the Murray family. They have since maintained her legacy through the Jayna Troxel Murray Foundation which provides enrichment scholarships to university students. Thank you for covering this, Dr. Grande. Felt good to hear Jayna's name.

In fact Brittany's ex boyfriend got a restraining order against her claiming that she had broken into his apartment and also that she was physically abusive to him. So there was some alleged violence in her prior history. What is really heart wrenching is that the employees from the Apple store next door heard the attack going on next door and did nothing, they could easily have saved Jayna's life

Brittany Norwood had played a victim for her entire life and was always rewarded for her victimhood. She honestly thought that she would not face any consequences for her role as a "victim". The murder victim, Jayna Murray sent a package to her brother who was working over in Iraq. He received the package after Jayna Murray was dead. You would have thought that her brother was more at risk than his deceased sister, Jayna Murray

Literally what the hell? They heard ALLLL that and NO one called the police? It’s still so surprising to me how much some people will let go of because they “don’t want to be involved”

I worked at ROSS. We werent allowed to approach a shoplifter but WERE required to look thru employees purses before they left the building even for a break. Smh

It always amazes me how these things can happen. Two girls from different states end up working at the same place for different reasons. Jayna wasn't even supposed to work that night. Lululemon has this ridiculous policy for the girls to check each other's bags. How horrible that Jayna paid with her life when she had done nothing wrong, but just by chance these two girls were brought together. This is so sad.

My daughter in law works at a Lululemon store I Chicago, she knows about this case and she says that after this episode, politics about closing the store at the end of the day, have been changed for better. Thanks, for your channel.

There is no way I would have returned to the store to help her. She would have had to wait till the next morning.

And it was all for nothing. Brittany tried to convince Jana not to tell management and thought if she were dead, she wouldn't get in trouble for stealing, but Jana had already told them before returning to the store.

The Apple employees heard all that, but none of them even called the police!?!?!? A security guard is nowhere near the level of a cop. Just horrible..

The theft prevention policy was created by an idiot. The manager should have been at every closing and shift change to inspect the bags not a peer. This would be a good case for a lawyer to argue.

As a PREVIOUS RETAIL MANAGER: There are several things that need clarification. 1. "Bag checks" are standard in all retail establishments. I've worked in over 7 and managed over five. Brittany should have hid her yoga pants somewhere else besides her bag since she knew it would be checked. I'm not condoning theft, just comment9mg on how stupid or perhaps arrogant she was. I'm not a fan of cameras everywhere in our lives. 2. Once you lock a store for the night, if it is opened again for any reason, the police are notified (at least where I've worked). It is a major RED FLAG to go back into the store. 3. With the oddity and red flag of going back into the store, I would never go back to work to meet the person I saw steal. I would have called my manager or District manager. 4. The Apple store people are insensitive and should be reprimanded.

Every thief who ever stole always felt themselves more entitled to the stolen goods than the owner of those goods.

I'm utterly fascinated at the commonality that is typically found in cases like this: where people suspect something is usual or not right, but no action is taken. Failure to act is why a lot of things like this happen. I often think about the number of lives saved and heartbreak that could've been avoided if someone had simply spoken up at the right time.

I saw an interview once with a police detective talking about people not responding to yells for help. He said it’s better for anyone in any kind of situation where they need help to yell Fire, as people respond / react to that more often. Just maybe not apple store employees ?

When I worked at Jo-Ann fabrics and crafts they had a policy where they check your bags before you leave, but it was always just the manager who would check your bag, not a coworker. I forgot about that.

Love your videos! This case has fascinated me since I first heard of it. I think there might be a mix up at 3:15, though. Jana found the stolen pants in Brittany's bag, not Brittany finding them in Jana's, as the video says, leading to Brittany's attack on Jana.

Thank you for posting this, Dr. Grande. I know you were trying to add some levity with the yoga pants and Apple employee comments, but this was too sad. Jayna should never have been left alone with an employee who was already suspected of stealing. Things have gotten far too dangerous these days.

First time I am hearing about this case. Brittany is a monster! When I worked at Victoria’s Secret years ago, one of the managers would search my purse as I was leaving the store at the end of my shift. They did that to all of the staff at my store. I don’t know if we had security cameras because if we did, there would be no need for that.

From a risk management standpoint having employees checking one another for theft is so inappropriate, so completely out of line with nationwide loss prevention standards that I cannot imagine Lululemon surviving a civil case brought by the family of the victim. Just a terrible policy thought up and implemented by someone clearly suffering from a head injury. They deserve to lose millions for this stupidity which sparked this eventual murder. Very sad

In retail, whether it’s a small locally owned store or a national chain theres no way employees would be allowed to enter a store after hours unless a manager or owner was with them. The entire idea of employees checking each other’s purses or bags and confronting each other for theft is outrageous in terms of the legal implications, the insurance liability and overall safety of the staff. I’m not totally surprised tho because in my personal dealings with Lululemon I’ve found them to be incredibly unprofessional.

I am appalled that the staff at the Apple store as well as the security guard failed to call the police. And Lululemon’s policy requiring coworkers to go through each other’s belongings at the end of their shifts to police and report internal thefts isn’t a good idea. Peers policing each other can result in friends covering up for each other, someone falsely accusing a coworker they don’t like, and an honest person turning in a dishonest one resulting in a violent act of revenge like what happened here. Hire a security guard or let a manager in authority do that job.

I worked at Victoria’s Secret when I was 18 (15 years ago) this was the technique they would have us use too and boy did it create DRAMA! After each shift we were supposed to “search” each other’s purses to make sure no one stole any merchandise from the store. One girl put items in another girls bag to get her fired. One girl lied and said she seen stolen clothes in the bag of a girl she didn’t like and later admitted to everyone that she did that. It was a whole mess and baffled me as to why the managers or corporate or whoever made that rule thought it was a good idea. I have no clue if they still do that but even as an 18 year old kid, I knew that was just asking for problems especially working in an environment with young mean girls who often have conflict, they could of definitely used this as an opportunity to get one fired or cause a lot of problems and trust me, they did!

Depending on staff to confront one another rather than pay for cameras is so messed up. Lululemon really cares more about money than human life, and especially women's lives. In 2019, Lululemon was exposed for having some of their clothing sourced from a Bangladesh factory where the women employees detailed how they were being humiliated and physically abused. They were called "sluts" and "whores" by management, physically hit by managers and made to work overtime, even while physically ill. Meanwhile, the amount they would be paid IN A MONTH would often be equal or less than the cost of one pair of Lululemon leggings.

I don't understand how anyone could feel comfortable with meeting with someone after hours, at night, and alone that they just accused of a theft. Alarm bells would be going off for me if someone asked to meet with me in these circumstances. Very sad ending that was preventable...never meet someone alone, especially after hours, especially if there is any reason for them to want to harm you. Take care of yourselves everyone.

I live in DC and still remember this case. I actually stopped shopping in that strore when I learned that Brittney was stealing at Georgetown location and they transferred her to Bethesda. Bethesda was less upscale so I guess they thought it's ok to have this kind of person working there.
