Luma-1 is an authentic recreation of the iconic LM-1, originally designed by Roger Linn in 1979 and now brought back by Joe Britt. Fully recreating the original design of the LM-1, it utilizes the same audio path (with vintage DACs and filters), runs the unmodified LM-1 software, and adds a secondary modern processor for adding highly desirable features like loadable sounds, USB connectivity, MIDI and more.

I am a sound designer. I design binary files for older drum machines. I can’t explain enough how cool this is. It brought me tears of happiness, like seeing an old friend. I would love to design sounds for this. And you can load EPROMs?? Wow!!! Amazing!! This has to be the best drum machine ever made.

Thats a great work . Cant judge about the sound as it s a phone recording but the sequencer groove sounds different compared to a Lm1 Rev1

It's not a phone recording, James. Just put a headphones on :) The grove can't be any different. It's the same schematics that drives it and the same LM1 code that executes. If you have LM1, make a cassette dump of patters and send it me. I'll load it in Luma-1 and we can compare :)

Would be nice to have a multi-eprom dump feature allowing the entire set to be changed Nice machine Can you and would you do one on the Linn Drum (popularly thought of as the LM2)

This is already done, you can dump multiple eproms and assign to different channels. Then you can save it as a bank onto internal SD card and reload it easily.

Hmm I wonder how you would dump emproms that make up a single sound ? Like linndrum hi hats ? That’s 4 chips

This is planned, there are not many sounds like that which were split across multiple ROMs such as 2716/2732 back in LM1, Linndrum days. We are also adding a feature for offset and crop size in case of more common situations where multiple sounds share the same EPROM. This is the case for all later 2764/27128/27256 drum machines, such as Drumulator, Drumtracks etc,etc.

Yes, we're looking at that next year, however DIY kit won't be cheap for the same reason of high complexity.

Ha-ha-ha, actually, that's thank you to the legacy technology used there. Those parts, such as DACs are getting warm over the time, also the linear power supply inside the closed box. We implemented the dynamic fan control, and under normal conditions it stays off. We constantly scan the temperature and if it's too hot then fan triggers while Luma-1 is NOT playing. We made everything possible to make it comfortable for an user and care about longevity of vintage components.

There's no reason to make the LUMA-1 that deep. The design could have been made to save us at least 3 inches depth in desk realstate. This box is abusively large for the small blue card inside... :(

Ha-Ha, the depth was actually reduced comparing to LM1 and there are no extra 3 inches :) There is no small blue card inside either. There are 12 purple PCBs :)
