Using a minimally invasive laminectomy, the location of the incision is often established by an intraoperative X-ray, using fluoroscopy. A skin incision about 1 inch in length is made to one side of the middle of the back at the surgical level. Dilators are placed sequentially to split the muscle down to the lamina, the back part of the spine. In contrast to traditional open back surgery that requires a large incision causing more damage to muscles and tissues, minimally invasive spine surgery has become the leading way to treat spine problems. Minimally invasive spine surgery also lessens the hospital stay, (many procedures can be performed as day surgery or 23 hour stay), reduces pain, results in less operative blood loss, allows for faster return to work and activities, and reduces the risk of infection than with traditional open back surgery. @@aartisan44 yes I did, L4-L5 fusion I was in the army for 16 years my last 2 years I was part of the 82nd Airborne Division and jumping out of airplanes and lots of running and rucksack marching with combat load 80 pounds. Physically therapy did help for a while but over time the pain was so bad that I couldn't do anything, walking, brushing my teeth, putting on pants anything and whatever do you DO NOT SNEEZE!, I have experience alot of pain but nothing as diliatating as deep nerve pain, at the time of my surgery both L4-L5 disc were gone. It has been 2 1/2 years since my L4-L5 fusion surgery walking is the easiest thing do nowadays a little stiffness in my right hip and that's ok most of us have same stiffness somewhere. I have no regrets about having the surgery. And I wish all of you the best of luck and speedy recovery.

@@sirebonite Thank you very much for your information. Your words are encouraging. I can see how carrying 80 pounds on your back and marching for miles would take a toll. May I ask, after healing from the surgery, can you run or lift weights? I know well how the deep nerve pain feels and it is awful. I have severe stenosis on L3-L4 and L4-L5. I cannot walk even a couple steps without at least mild pain that builds over time. Raising leg to put on pants does hurt intensely. The laminectomy sounds good, but the fusion part sounds scary. I am in my mid-50's and want to run and lift again. This may be a fantasy, idk. I think of the story of Ronnie Coleman, the famous 8-time Mr. Olympia and it is disheartening. May I ask, are you similar in age to me? Sorry about my slow reply.

Thanks everybody. And I was in the worst pain of my life right after my surgery for about 2 weeks I could barley walk. My girlfriend helped shower me. Now, almost a year out of L4-L5 spinal fusion with pedicle screws, I could say I’m glad I did it ! I go to the gym 4-5 days a week, but Iam not pain free! Tbh I noticed my weight affects my spine a lot, right now Iam on the heavier side 190+ but when I was 170-180 I felt so good. It’s about diet for me, but Iam glad I got the surgery. I use to play soccer back then before but Iam not yet ready for that, I will give it another year to fully recover, it’s a long process, don’t be discouraged! Stay positive.

On second fusion because the first one failed and they gave me a laminectomy this time, def hoping for better results. I have a very high pain tolerance and can tell you that spinal fusion is the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced in life. Had a dural tear and could not stop filling up those drains in the hospital, boy. 44 staples this time and five weeks in rehab. If you have to get a fusion be prepared for PAIN, they love to downplay how insanely painful this op is.

By different Dr's and both times ended up with a Durel Tear, which left me with Claudia Equina both times and now I don't have control over my bladder or bowels...sick of this crap. Is having numbness after surgery usually go away on its own. I had this procedure done 8 days ago for left leg and L side back pain and now have numbness to my R foot.. Apparently the Dr did a bilat laminectomy and now I have numbness. Does this mean I will need a new surgery to correct this? Or can it be attributed to post op tissue swelling and it will resolves on its own. And at what point in time should I become concerned?

@@milekrizman I'm feeling really well! I walk a lot as that's what my surgeon told me I would have to do for the rest of my life. Most days my pain is very minimal. I definitely feel the stability and it is wonderful. I'm very careful though. I don't do much that could strain my back. I'm sure I'm just overly cautious. I have no regrets! So glad I had the surgery. I should not have waited so long...as a result, I do still have numbness in the right foot. The left foot came back almost immediately. My right is totally operable, just numb. It doesn't stop me from day to day life. I waited almost 10 years to have surgery.

I had this done without the nuts and bolts. Relived the pain going down my leg. But spinal stenosis is a degenerative disease it's not going to go away. Any treatment is only temporary. The back pain is chronic. I can stand no more than 5 minutes without the pain beginning. A heat pad brings temporary relief. Steroids have been suggested but again only a temporary solution. I think you just have to live with it, a band aid isn't going to help.

I had a right sided laminectomy 5 weeks ago for spinal stenosis and lots of bone spurs which completely relieved all the symptoms in that leg. However, the symptoms have migrated to my left leg which is now as bad as my right leg used to be ( painful, weak, numb all the way to the foot. Now symptoms are being somewhat managed by prednisone and Gabapentin but this pain shift seems like an odd progression. Any one experience this?

Both feet bottom numb from start of toes to middle of foot causing balance issues. It gets better every day as I am able to walk finally without cane.
