It's been happening over the last 25 years! My friends had a home built about 20 years ago. They had a hard time trying to get enough walnut for their cabinets, vanities, staircase and trim. They finally found a retired cabinet maker, who had 750 board feet of walnut in a kiln. They bought it all cheap!

Boss man you have a wonderful family. It's educational everytime you show up. Everything can be improved with time glad to see some of your goals and dreams are being met. Working in a factory, its nice to know the working man can create something for himself.

Although I love watching your lovely daughters hard at work it is always nice to hear from the Boss. I love to hear about your reasoning behind what you cut and how it is going to be used. Your concept of as close to zero waste as possible I really appreciate that and there are so many uses for it. Doing what you love and being good at and making a comfortable living for your family is what is really important when the day is over. I've ALWAYS wanted to do what y'all are doing. Especially as a family, that's so awesome. So I found this video very interesting and educational. Emerald teaches me something nearly every video. I also find it mesmerizing to just watch the videos of the machine doing its work on the wood. I'm a little jealous I don't have one.

The mill is fun but I love watching these videos most of all. The sharing of knowledge is so valuable.

I think it's really good what your doing with hardwoods. It's also good that you show the business aspects of log yard in end it's business needs a profit. Around here we have several Amish sawmills all they cut is hardwood ties and pallet boards.

Awesome video! Back when I was selling log homes we had people who specified having blue stain pine logs. It was an upcharge because it is relatively rare. I too would wake in the night (always around 3am too) and be unable to shut my brain off thinking of all the aspects of creating and maintaining a profitable business. My family depended on my decisions. Good times those were. I love your wholesome videos and family ties. I will be buying one of the charity shirts. I am from Iowa, I'm a wood worker. this was the best video I have seen so far. this one wants me to hook up my trailer and head your way. I do a lot of custom engravings on small pieces for now, but I am starting in the custom furniture world of wood working. I think my family and I might have to take a business training camp and visit you're lumber yard in the near future. I'm sure we wouldn't be leaving empty handed. Thanks for the awesome content. When I first started watching this channel, it was because I am a woodworker from Southern Ontario and I have an interest in all aspects of woodworking; including how and where the various species of wood that I use are coming from and how they are harvested. However, I have recently come to realize that when I am watching this channel of yours, I receive the added bonus of watching a family work together on their family business and facing the challenges of making that business succeed. Made a couple doors with the pine blue stain. Without the blue stain, pine is a boring plain looking wood. Love the blue stain.

This discussion was very interesting. It reminds me of farmers and ranchers here in TX trying to calculate the mix of plants or animals that will yield the best return on their investment of time and money with the least detriment to their land. It's a delicate balancing act, and one that I'm glad my living doesn't depend on. One foot in front of another, Boss Man!

For many of my woodworking projects 4' or even 3' lengths are just fine, so my message to you is that shorter lengths of hardwoods can be just as desirable (and therefore as valuable) as longer lengths.

Thank you for your service. My hat is off to anybody who goes to work and produces a product these days. Not everybody can run a profitable business. You guys work hard to produce a renewable product, and I think that is just great. This is all very interesting.

I like your approach to developing the business. I've met a lot of people who believed in "Get Rich Quick" and in the end 1 out of 100 people made it and everyone else burned their money. I'm a wood worker and have always found away to pursue lumber making and furniture building while holding down a job with my local public utility district , no regrets. I have watched other videos where people talk about firewood being saleable where in some markets the lumber may sit for years with no buyer. I don't have a market for ties, so I cut my centers into pallet stock. Great incite as to your situation.

They are NOT mistakes. They are learning opportunities. When something doesn't turn out the way that you expect, figure out what went wrong and how to improve the next time. If you don't figure out how to do better, only then is it a mistake. Good job with the channel. I have learned a lot from watching. Thank you for taking the time to explain.

There are a lot of wood turners out there that would buy some of that hard wood in the fire pile, cut it into squares leaving the bark on and advertise it.

Love the humor. Your videos are always interesting. My son told me what some of the wood he’s milled sells for craftspeople /furniture makers, artists and commercial photographers it’s amazing. One of the photographers (for a most famous jean brand) told him after paying for the pieces do you want it back otherwise we just trash! The place he works for also does some commissioned work making log benches, chairs and custom tables. I believe some of the benches have sold in the $2,000 to $3,000 range, the do sell in a high income area. I wish all much success in the retail business.

Ken honey locust trees in North Carolina are a big part of the deers diet in snowy winter ,,their banana shape pods turn black and melt up through the snow and the deer love them ,,they will flatten your tires with those thorns tho

The stained pine sells to the craft furniture crowd big time here in Texas. Isolate it and charge a premium. Sort of like Ambrosia Maple. I don't know your profit in fire wood, but here in Texas there's a premium for wide board and the firewood rendered to 4/4 and 5/4 , random widths at less than 10" wide would sell at full bf price depending on how it grades out. As a furniture maker I only wanted the wide boards when I needed them. Interior parts, drawer fronts, drawer boxes, etc. the narrower boards were a way to cut inputs.
