This is your most visually appealing video so far. Love the shots with the lume!

That was just plain fun!! I enjoyed every "un-scientific" minute of the video because it was representative of something any normal person would have done in their own living room. Ok, maybe just me...but then I'm not so normal :) Nothing takes me back to my childhood like a good ole flashlight and glow in the dark stuff!! Thanks for sharing your fun test with all of us!!

Great video, I really enjoyed it. One quick question, do all seiko watches look like the tuna? I just bought a sarb017 and I hope it glows like that. Same thing for a 007?

I'm really pleased with the Lumibrite on my Alpinist, even though it's small dots it still has enough lume when I wake up in the middle of the night.

Same here with my Alpinist. No difficulty with recognizing the time through the night. Yes, the lume has dimmed significantly, but my eyes have adapted to the darkness so it works out well.

Absolutely. Most watches fade out within an hour (except Luminox and similar watches of course) so a fade out test is essential.

Doug Nelson Lume does last all night. The thing is that it fades during the first hour about 90% and if your eyes are not adjusted to darkness you won’t see the lume after the first hour, if you went to bed, though, and you’d get up at 5 in the morning you’d definitely still see it. At least that’s the case with my Seiko SKX007.

In general blue lume is always dimmer than green. It's pretty amazing how well the blue lume is actually doing. The more lume you use the longer it will last as well
@michaelbarlow66104 жыл бұрын
@ Adam Severinsen. I read somewhere on the internet that although green luminescent paint on watch hands and minute markers initially glows brighter than blue luminescent paint, blue luminescent paint dims slower than green luminescent paint and ,therefore, glows in the dark longer than green luminescent paint.
@jvanleeuwenCdn4 жыл бұрын
Your eye / brain will detect green before blue. That's why green lume is mostly used. It seems brighter / more impressive. But once your eyes adjust to low light conditions, you will see dim blue before dim green. It's more detectable to your eye. Therefore, if your using your watch to illuminate something like an key hole, green lume is an better choice. If your using the lume to tell time at 2pm 3pm.... then blue lume or bgw9 Is an much better choice. Green lumed watches sell more units because they do better in youtube watch reviews. So.... there you have the info. Peace
@galacticcaveman40453 жыл бұрын
@@jvanleeuwenCdn wtf are you talking about? LOL almost all of the "info" you state here is utter non-sense.
@michaelbarlow66103 жыл бұрын
@@jvanleeuwenCdn . I never said or even suggested that green lume is a "horrible" choice to put on the watch hands and watch markers on watch dials. I merely stated what I had read somewhere on the internet (possibly an article on the subject on Wikipedia) about green lume appearing initially brighter in the dark than blue lume , but that over time, blue lume dims slower than green lume. Sometime in the near future I'll do a comparison in which I'll check one of my watches in the dark that has blue lume versus one of my watches that has green lume and determine which is easier to see in the dark at 2AM or 3AM in the morning.

Cool video. And, from my own experience Lumibrite is generally a tiny bit better than any other common superluminova type lume out there. It really depends on the application also. More on that below. Lumibrite will be very strong when initially charged.. it almost feels radioactive. it is very strong at the beginning. Then when it fades a bit, it's still very long lasting and glows sufficiently well throughout the night. I also find Lumibrite, at least the newest formula used in the SBBN033 (or similar models), to be very reactive and currently, imho, the best.. Doesn't take that much to get it charged and it lasts long. I joke to myself and others that it's so good, it practically negates nearly any advantage tritium tubes have since you can effectively see the lume easily with minimal charge time and it lasts a very long time.. well long enough than anyone should need to spend in complete darkness. Lumibrite in general, regardless of colors, is pretty good.. talking stuff like C3 and BGW9. Supposedly there's anewer formula of C1 lume that's supposed to be better than C1 of the past. Anyways, they are nearly as good as Lumibrite, but does seem just a tiny bit behind Lumibrite.. they don't seem seem as bright after freshly being charged and they typically fade a bit faster than Lumibrite. But, once you get both Lumibrite and Superluminova dimmed down and normalized at the lower lume glow level, they are about the same in terms of legibility when dimmed in very dark situations. I also have found Lumibrite endures just a tiny bit longer than Superluminova. Out of all the Superluminova including C3, BGW9, C1, and all the stuff in between including the Aged Radium looking lume.. C3 Green will be the most "potent". Green color will always show the strongest. BGW9 comes in very close, but because of the blue glow, it at least visually appears slightly less potent than C3. And, you really have to factor in the application. A larger and heavier deposit of lume paint will of course be stronger and more enduring. Consequently, lesser smaller applications will respectively be less so. Additionally, keep in mind perhaps the date of the application. If you compare a watch now 2018 to a watch from say 10 or even 5 years ago, chances are the lume intensity and performance will alter and reflect respectively. I would add, i've done my own custom Seiko mod with lume paint. Look up my "Night King" SKX mod on KZfaq. I have Yobokies Grand Seiko Diver hands which seemingly glow as much as Lumibrite. I have no idea what Yobokies uses, I assume C3 green lume. I have also repainted the lume on my aftermarket dial with a blue lume paint kit because it was weak C1 lume on it. And, I can say to my surprise that the $20 blue lume paint kit seams to glow just like BGW9 and lasts just as long as the Yobokies hands and all of them perform just about as good as Lumibrite. Reactive, strong bright glow upon fresh charge, a "good" sustained glow after removal from light charging source, and legible thoughout the night till morning.. a good 6-8 hours at least. BUT, if I'm being honest and nitpicking, they are still just an insignificant amount less than Lumibrite. But, damn close enough. I think there are plenty of very good lume being used on most modern watches these days, the differences will be marginal at best. But, I have seen and experienced some REALLY BAD lume application.. it's to the point where why bother? It pisses me off because it is more disappointing to see the application is so bad and weak than if they had not tried at all and not put the weak ass lume.

To do this correctly and add some objectivity, one would need two identical Coleman flashlights, a timer and a way to hit each watch with light at the exact same time. Also, lume surface area plays a large part here. It's the large round globes in the SEIKO verses the flat thin markers in the Legrand. I submit this respectfully.This was fun, if somewhat subjective.

As more lume paint they apply as longer and brighter it lasts. Look at lume tec. They put 8 layers on it and it is like a lamp the whole night. Love this idea but maybe you need to do a take 2 video making it a little more scientific: 1. choose watches with similar lume patterns so the quantity of the lume material as close as possible 2. start with watches having NO glow 3. Charge the watches separately in a contained black place so light from charging other watch doesn't add to other watch 4. time how long the lumes take to de-charge and give the min/sec results at end. Thanks T3 great vid.

The Marine Master (Tuna) is a 'tool' watch pure and simple. I contend putting it up against a desk diver is invalid. As others have noted the human eye detects green rather better than blue. That is why the HUD in jet fighters is depicted in green rather than any other colour.

The real estate of the tuna's indices are bigger and green will always be warmer than blue. And these are not the only 2 players in the game, you should have thrown in a tritium powered watch into the mix
@quantametric5 жыл бұрын
I think this every time I see a lume comparison, people almost always go in favor of the lume that has more surface area, 'ohh it's brighter!' technically no, it just has more lume surface area per section so it gives off a larger halo, but if you look at the lume itself it's often the same actual brightness. That being said, apparent brightness surely accounts for something.. nice video.

In this video comparison of SuperLuminova versus Lumibrite, the only reason that the watch on the right appears brighter in the dark than the watch on the left is because the watch markers and watch hands on the watch dial on the right are lumed with white lume which naturally makes that watch dial appear to be brighter than the blue-lumed watch hands and markers on the watch dial on the left. White lume on watch hands and/or markers always appears to be more vividly bright than green or blue lume. In other words, white lume naturally "stands out" more than blue or green lume on watch hands and markers.

Are you testing the watches or the luminous material? Because if you're trying to test/compare the actual luminosity of the luminous materials, then you need to apply them in the exact same amount across the exact same surface material, in the exact same pattern. Your test only compares the individual application of each luminous material to disparate surfaces and in different amounts in different patterns.

While the brightness of the lume is important, I think the longevity/readability is more important. In a movie theater, I need a watch that will last at least two hours so I can read the time on my watch. Neither of these lumes will last this time frame. I have a microbrand watch (Borealis Seastorm v2) with a healthy amount of bgw9 and it's probably the only watch in my collection that comes close to my newest seiko. It's not quite as good as lumabrite but it's still pretty impressive. I have a couple of seiko divers from the early and late 90s and the lume has diminished considerably over the years. I'm not sure if seiko changed their formula over the years or if it just loses its mojo over time but they're not even close to my newer seikos.
