Luminosity masks are not as hard as most people think. In this video I give you my quick explanation of something that most people are too intimidated to learn. The truth is, they are just another tool, granted and very very powerful one.

Dude, you just saved me chunk of time; Every other video on KZfaq that tries to explain this is between 15 and 30 mins long! Subbed & liked. Many thanks :)

When you told me dodging and burning with Luminosity masks was essentially painting with a stencil I finally got how and why I would want to use luminosity selections to do dodging and burning with lum selections to get contrast where I was dodging and burning. Forever grateful for that insight. I bought both your luminosity course and the dodge and burn course and they were extremely helpful. And I have a question--pretty sure of the answer but doesn't hurt to ask the master. So we can create a blank layer, set it to soft light blend mode. Then create the mask and select it and create a mask on that layer and be good to go. But you also set up by creating the mask and instead of selecting it you use the dodge button and it creates a blank layer converts it to soft light and you are basically set up in the same way.If I followed you this far this means these are two ways to do the same thing. You did both in one lesson and I just want to make sure they are just two ways to do the same thing. One creates a mask that is the template and the other creates a selection that is essentially a template as well. Yes? No? And I hope the Out of Oregon workshop in Death Valley goes in January and you are there. I won't have to wade in the ocean and live in fear of losing my gear. :-)

Love the series. I've been a Lightroom-only user for a few years now, but I think it's time (especially with more complex scenes) to give Photoshop a go for editing my photos.

I am new PS user. Now introducing myself to the luminosity panels. I found 4 or 5 of them and they offer (at leas on my eye) similar functionality. Should I use few panels at the same time or one is enough?

Not a Photoshop user, but Affinity Photo has a function called "blend ranges" where you can blend a layer based on specific tonal values. It works on a line graph, much like a curves adjustment does. You simply pull the curve down on tonal ranges you don't want affected, and you can even create Sigmoidal curves for dynamic luminosity-based blending of layers. Does PS have this also?

essentially this would be like "blend if" in photoshop, you can do it with adjustment layers, pixel layers, or any layer really, Luminosity masks arn't as non destructive, but they are more flexible in that you can fine tune and target tones based on not only luminance but color as well.. and rather than using them as a layer mask.. you can also use them as a selection and paint through them.

Raise your hand if you understood completely what he said in the first 15 seconds...lol...I'm on my third time through... it's either a layer mask or selection that you are painting thru
@NickPage

You can use them as a layer mask, or a selection. When you’re using it as a selection it functions like a stencil

Great video. For those of you struggling to understand Luminosity Masks I suggest you check out Aaron Dowlings website adppro.com . He also has a panel that I've used for a couple years and I think it's much better the lumenzia or TK actions.
