Absolutely hate that they removed the top deck lcd and that the mode dial is not lockable. Other than that its improvement across the board. And it literally is the S5ii chassis with the m43 sensor

it did feel just like an s5, maybe this is the new intention. uniform feel across the line up?

The loss of the top screen is a major downgrade, if you plan to use the G9ii as an “outdoor, action, wildlife camera. Being able to turn the rear screen inwards to protect it and still be able to see all major settings is a big advantage. Also the loss of the eye relief toggle on the EVF is unfortunate. I think Panasonic took a conscious decision not to give their M43 camera a better body than their junior FF.

I also think it was a cost-cutting move. Shared bodies with the S5 series saves on cost.

I've a G9 and the upgrades on the G9II aren't revalent to me. The loss of the top info screen is a big downer, so I won't be up grading

we wonder if they will create two models like they have with the S5, one with a top screen maybe?

I will miss the ability to shoot in "silent" mode with the flip of the switch in the front of the G9. Especially when shooting in very quiet places. I hate drawing attention to myself.
@castlecameras

Thats a key point! we do believe you can address this to a custom button.
@Reyfox1
@Reyfox1 9 ай бұрын
@@castlecameras true, it can be a custom button, but after years of shooting with it being "right there", not taking up any custom button, I think it's an oversite. Like the top LCD panel that I often use. If/when I decide to buy, I will have to adjust.

Of course, it would be a shame if not... but that's a custom button that will become unavailable for something else, hense... that's a downgrade!@@castlecameras

It does seem to have a larger look to it although in person they feel very familiar and in similar size and weight.

As someone who has used the original G9 for almost 6 years, I'm excited about the new body, but I wish they would have kept the switch in front (that I had for the electronic and mechanical shutters) and the LCD screen. However, the new autofocus system and sensor may be more than enough to make me forget about those omissions. I use mine primarily for shooting soccer and have struggled with fast/reliable focusing during games, especially if it's raining. Hoping this mends the issues because I have always had good experiences shooting Lumix cameras over the last 15+ years since my first FZ18. I'm sure this will offer it's own list of pros and cons, but I'm overall excited.

I believe that the rubber above the port of the SD cards has been removed (already from the S5i and then later also on the S5ii and X) because it is a defect of the old G9. There are many cases on the internet of people with problems of detachment of the rubber on the port of the SD cards and with replacement of the port (available on AliExpress at 25.00 euros). Having also the S5i as well as the old G9, I think they did well to remove the rubber above the port.

I don't think the new body is better or worse in terms of handling. Where I do care is that the body is taller: 5mm. I was hoping for a little bit smaller body that would more easily fit in a pouch. I tend to avoid taking my G9 for casual photo walks because of its dimensions. G9 is such a friendly camera, I would have loved to have this possibility with the G9 II. But this is the only negative point I have on the G9 II. Of course I will get one.

I never referred to the top LCD screen much, but DO lament the power switch getting moved. The G9 power switch location was perfect for me.The power switch in its new location is smaller than the same switch on the GH5, so awkward to use. These are trade-offs for enhanced focus ability, stabilization and pixel count. Moving the view finder proximity sensor is a small thing, but nice to reduce a hand motion blanking the big view screen. It is what it is. I still love the G9. I also have a GH5 and GH4. I dislike swapping lenses and exposing the sensor to the dust in the air. All in all, the G9M2 is a keeper with definite advantages. And, proves the point that there are no perfect cameras, just a mix of advantages and trade-offs.

I am not pleased with the removal of the top lcd. On the other hand, the controls are better placed, and the video button is bigger and more convenient to control. All in all the mark 2 is a much better camera with very advanced and improved features. Good by to my old beloved G9 ..😊

Probably positive is the change of the EVF sensor position. It happens quite often for me with the G9 it reacts when I use the touch screen. The missing top display is bad, also the disappeared front switch, which is I believe as standard the switch for electronics shutter/mechanical shutter is not good, I use it very often. The missing dial lock is a disadvantage, although I could live with it, I rarely use it. I guess the placement of the to buttons next to the lens is better than the position on the G9. All in all I like the G9's body more.

Seems like a step backwards to me, mostly due to the missing top screen and front lever, as everyone else has also noticed. Another (admittedly minor) inconvenience I see with the new body design is the placement of the power switch, which is now harder to reach if you're already holding the camera up to your eye before you notice it's off. The only improvement I see over the old body design is that there's now a function button that's in a more convenient spot for back-button focusing than the old one had.

G9 with the GH6 tilt screen. The 90 degree body and buttons aren't ergonomic or artistic at all. Gx9II could have less, but they should have given it the best.

I shoot the G9 for wildlife and feel the ergonomics of that camera are just about perfect. How do the hand grips compare and do you prefer the feel of one camera over the other? I want to like the new G9 and appreciate Lumix introducing phase detect AF (although I've been getting pretty good results with contrast AF) but I think I will miss the LCD on top and AE/AF lock but only time will tell. Thanks for the closeup look.

I agree that the ergonomics of the g9 are the best of any camera I’ve ever held. The new body is great. I definitely prefer it to my Sony, but that perfect feeling that I had with the g9 isn’t there. It’s a great, comfortable body, but that hard to describe “perfect fit” isn’t there for me. But it’s so subjective.

@@nolannatashaTV Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking about buying another original OG9 while they're still out there and then looking at the Mark 2. Like you, I think the OG9 has the best ergonomics of any camera I've ever used and the software upgrades have allowed me to capture diving terns coming out of the water with prey so I'm pretty happy with results but I"m glad to see Lumix working hard to keep current tech in the G9 series.

Now that the G9 ii came out, i will wait for price drops to buy a second G9. As a mostly stills and landacape phtographer, the G9 ii represents for me a small upgrade, or a big upgrade but in areas irrelevant for me.

I definitely think the double dial on the G9 was a genious idea so it liberates the right shoulder making it available for the top screen. This is a big loss and downgrade to me: one feature less but with no gain in terms of compacity or ergonomics. I can't see any benefit of having separated dials. Also the front lever for silent mode was great, I use it all the time: no need to asign fn button or entering the menu for quick switching to silent mode. That's another unexplainable loss as this space hasn't been used for anything else! BTW I'm wondering how you switch to silent with the G9II? Of course I'm gonna go for the G9II as soon as the price tag gets down: the better AF, extra res and improved IS weight much more in the balance... but I'm really gonna miss those two features! And I really don't understand why did we have to loose them...
@castlecameras
@castlecameras 5 ай бұрын
Yes! There has been a fair few changes to this camera. Regarding silent mode it is in the menu system which means you would need to assign it to a button somewhere unfortunately. Fantastic camera though, a camera we feel needs more recognition. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment we appreciate the time and effort.
