Fantastic stuff Matti! I am sure many will find the comparison between two cameras very useful. I like that you both include some tips and advice along the way, like Peter reminding everyone to ensure the flaps/covers on camera are all closed before exposing to rain or other elements, for weather-sealing. The video is fun to watch, I cannot wait to see more Finland, and more Peter vs Matti!

Peter, please challenge Matti and Panasonic more on autofocus, particularly with non-Panasonic lenses. Matti, please challenge Peter and Olympus more on video quality. I own an Olympus OM-D E-M1 (original) and a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85, and I just wish those two cameras would have a baby. I want the phase-detect autofocus of the Olympus with the audio and video quality of the Lumix. Better yet, the OM-D E-M1 II and the GH5 should really get together.

G9 owner. IBIS is great. Images are great. Video is great. Yes, very happy with the camera. I am sure the Oly is very good to. It's the person behind the camera that determines if the images are good.

It is funny that these two cameras are great but you need both of them to have completeness. The G9 has incredible low light performance, while the autofocus on EM-1 II is probably the best for M43 (firmware 3.0 update). The handheld stabilization is pretty good on both (maybe a notch better for Olympus). You cannot beat the price of the G9 and the 10bit video with the update. The menu on the Panasonic G series is really intuitive. I think you need both combined into one.

Hi Matti and Peter, first of all thanks for this objective comparisation. I'm a Panasonic user from a long time (video and photo) but for my activity I use also a Olympus camera. Overall The image quality is similar but the real difference is the usability where, for me, the Panasonic is the winner with a good ergonomics and system menu. Thanks again for all.

Love the video and the comparison, I looked at the OMD EM1 Mk 2 when it came out, but opted for the Lumix G7 instead, primarily because of price. My son was trying to get me to buy one of the Olympus - OMD 5 or OMD 10. Since I loved the G7 so much, when I upgraded I went with the G9, and it is fantastic especially with the IBIS. I’ve had it now for more than a year, taking photos in 3 continents and I could not be happier. And, interesting enough, my son just traded in his Nikon DSLR for an Olympus OMD EM1 Mk 2. So, maybe, we’ll join you guys and make our own comparison videos, just kidding. Keep up the good work!

Love my E-M1 Mark II - and even more so since the latest firmware update! I am sure I could do fine with the Lumix as well. At the time I purchased my Olympus (when the E-M1 Mark II first came out) the Panasonic bodies seemed a bit chunkier, and I really liked the compact size of the Olympus. I also value that Olympus has such a long tradition in imaging - for still photography Panasonic is a relative newcomer.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I also value traditions, but are they more on an emotional level. I think all manufacturers had to start almost from scratch with the digital and the traditions didn't help that much. Look at Sony for example. They bought Minolta, but still, who would have thought 15 years ago that they are going to dominate the industry. But I have to say, it would be nice to able to buy some old Panasonic Lumix legacy lenses and use them on the S1R😀

I have G9, E-M1mkII, and E-M1X. Use the G9 the most. One feature that is not often mentioned on the G9 is that the sensor has an anti-reflective coating. This improves picture quality when shooting into light sources. The flare and "sun" spots are greatly reduced. This is not an advertising claim that does not mean much, it really works. I was shooting a lot of sunrises with my G9 and after a while I noticed that I was not having problems with sun spots like I usually did. Then in a video this feature was mentioned. I thought to myself that this must be the reason for the improved performance. I had noticed the benefit before I knew the reason why.

Enjoyed this video in December! Nice to see some sun. As a longtime Olympus user and first time Panasonic owner (G85), I have to say there’s now a lot of parity (similarity). It used to be that Olympus offered the IBIS and better JPEG color, while Panasonic offered a better hybrid video/stills experience, but now they’re more similar than ever before. They even both have a supercontrol panel option! Thanks for tips like the LCD using less power than the EVF, I didn’t know that. The Panasonic quick-sleep EVF mode seems to be pretty effective too though. I also enjoyed your banter! If you ever did this kind of two-brands comparison video again, it would be nice to get some close-up views of each camera. Like, when you talk about the grip, it would be nice to see the Lumix from the front then rotate to a top view, then the Olympus from the top and rotate it to view the front. Maybe also one or two feature demos, like “this is how I preview exposure in the EVF” or “This is how you enable and shoot the hi-res mode” so we get an idea of the menus and how the cameras operate.

@@unbroken1010 it can be done, of course, but since they're a similar price you'd always opt for a Panasonic or Blackmagic if buying purely for filmmaking since the superior autofocus of the Olympus isn't that useful on a set with an AC or focus puller. I own an original Olympus OM-D E-M1 and a Panasonic G85, and there are strengths and weaknesses to both. Panasonic's video quality is superior to Olympus's...no doubt about it. My G85 stomps all over my E-M1 for video and, from what I understand, produces even better results than the much more expensive E-M1 II. Not only that, but I've definitely had my battles with the weak pre-amp in my E-M1, and I understand that is no better on the E-M1 II. The G85 has an excellent pre-amp...you can even use it outdoors with the built-in mic in a pinch as long as the wind isn't kicking up. I do understand the pre-amp has been greatly improved on the E-M1X, but that's a lot of money. Hopefully, the upcoming E-M5 Mark III will address the pre-amp issue at a more affordable price. But I think Olympus's phase-detect autofocus is superior to Panasonic's DFD, especially because I get to use PDAF with Olympus glass on the E-M1. And I definitely prefer my Olympus 12-40mm and 40-150mm f2.8 pro lenses to Panasonic's 12-35 and 35-100mm f2.8 lenses. Not only does the 40-150mm have a longer reach than the 35-100mm, you can extend that reach even farther with teleconverters. Plus, the Olympus lenses have those nifty manual focus clutches with hard stops and a distance scale. I've rented the E-M1 II before, and it takes that autofocus to a completely different level. I have found the C-AF tracking performance wanting when putting Olympus glass on my G85. Plus, PDAF works even if you put Panasonic lenses on an Olympus camera! I honestly wish the E-M1 II and GH5 would have a baby and make a near-perfect video camera like the GH5 with phase-detect autofocus like the E-M1 II.

To many easy information that are right on the paper which are easy to read then watch. I was hoping for comparison in intuitive or operational point of view. I noticed omd only offer target point based touch pad AF? I used lumix GX85 and that can point or trace to any point. Thats the verdict on G9. This make overall experience whole lot different when you first grab the system or just using it once in awhile for most casual users out there. Can anyone confirm?

After some years of E-M1 I am more attracted to the G9. if I get a new MFT body. However, a few things concern me. The grip on the G9 is thicker, I like the E-M1 Mark 2 grip better for day long holding. I have some old FT lenses and the E-M1 original and Mark 2 AF these lenses better. The Panasonic JPEG engine has improved a lot since the G2 and GF3 but the colours are still subtly different from the Olympus JPEG colour (raw solves that one)

Two of my favorites. Now about the cameras, I am still trying to decide. I wish the two companies would collaborate more so that the stabilization in lenses were made to a standard. Thank you for the comparison. You may not be able to given your ‘ambassadorships’ but what would be really interesting is if you reviewed each other’s cameras - now that would be a real comparison! I own the E-M1.2 and am very impressed with its rock solid build, speed and customisability. I went to a Panasonic day and tested it against the G9. The G9 was a beautiful camera also, I must say. It was substantially bigger than the Olympus, which was a step away from the compelling reason for MFT. The larger and higher-red EVF was a revelation, although I found the colour reproduction not as natural as the Olympus - this may have been a setting adjustment, I acknowledge. The Panasonic UI is first class - I think they really push the boundaries of moving to the mirrorless technology compared to Olympus - who still display everything just as a DSLR. At the time, my Olympus had firmware 2.3. I would say the Panasonic DFD contrast detection was as good as the hybrid AF on Olympus and better in very high contrast circumstances. With V3.0 firmware on Olympus, I feel the Oly is probably a little stronger now for the types of photography I do in terms of AF. However, Panasonic’s object tracking was vastly superior to the Olympus. I found the AF point joystick on the G9 quite laggy so didn’t really appreciate the benefit as much as I might have. Overall, I felt the G9 was a strong competitor to the E-M1.2 - each with some relative strengths and personal preference probably required to split the two.

Olympus is the only manufacturer of M43 cameras that uses hybrid AF, which (as I'm primarily a video shooter) may be enough to make me switch brands from Panasonic. On the other hand, Olympus doesn't make a truly video-centric mirrorless hybrid like the GH5. It's kind of frustrating that there is enough technology between the two companies to meet my needs, but no single camera body combines them. A successor to the GH5 with the continuous AF capabilities of an EM1Mk iii would be a game-changer!

Finly, having been watching severel videos of you and Peter I came to the conclusion to buy a G9 wit the Leica 100-400 and the Olympus 12-100 Pro. The G9 I prefer due to the clearer Ergonomy of the hardware and the dialogue over the EM1. The Oly 12-100 is for my view the more universal and better travel lens, despite the loss of dual stabilisation. My question is, can I swith between in body stab. and In Lens stab. ? Pretty fair - both great cameras and fairly priced now they’ve come down from their original rrps. I have the EM1 mk1 and the G9. I like both, but while there are pros and cons to either systems I generally prefer (not just with these models) the Panasonic ergonomics. I was contemplating before buying the G9 going back to full frame (but mirrorless). But the G9, especially with a speed booster and fast glass mitigates the disadvantages of a smaller format to such a degree it doesn’t seem worth the massive investment.

Peter did not mention some key points of Olympus cameras, like live composite. Now, the E-M1 mk iii fills some gap with the G9 : joystick, USB charging AND powering, and some cool nice features : MyMenu, hand held high resolution, live ND, and improved autofocus, especially for face detect. This makes the E-M1 iii an even better camera. But the G9 stays a better video cam (10bits, 4K 60p), except if you must rely on the better stabilizer and phase detect autofocus, which is often the case. I think all M43 are great cameras and can take great photos, but some features may be in some cases critical to be able to make a photo you could not take otherwise.

When I made this decision last year I was starting from scratch. I tried to focus on the lenses rather than the bodies. It's likely that I will keep the lenses longer than the body. What I found frustrating was getting clear answers about cross-brand compatibility. As far as I can tell from reviews there seems to be some evidence of better within-brand autofocus and image stabilization performance. I ended up with a G9. I particularly liked the prospect of good compatibility with the leica 8-18mm with its filter thread - which allows me to use polarizers and ND filters without carrying around a bulky square filter system and adaptor etc. The leica 50-200mm was also attractive for my purposes because it is more compact than the olympus alternative.

Thanks for your input. It seems that AF works better with the same brand lenses. However, as far as I know, it's not bad on any combination and the downsides are more pronounced in special occasions, like shooting flying birds. In "normal" photography they all seem to work pretty well.

I've used both Olympus and Panasonic bodies and lenses. I've not worried much about interchanging brands. Indeed I think it's one of the really nice things about the m43 system. Both companies are making some great lenses and we have quite a lot of choice to suit our individual preferences. Lumix says that DFD works only with the Panasonic lenses. That may indeed be true but most of the Olympus lenses I've used on Panasonic bodies focus fine. Perhaps if you're using high frame rates and CAF it might be better to use Panasonic lenses, but for most uses the lenses there is no issue. I think Panasonic and Olympus handle UV a little differently. I think some of the Panasonic lenses are more prone to CA on Olympus bodies, especially some of the earlier Panasonic lenses. The 7-14, for example, was pretty well known for CA issues on Olympus bodies. Dual stabilization doesn't work across brands, so that could be a consideration. For most uses, I'd look more at the specific lens characteristics than brand.

I've got both cameras because I couldn't choose ;-). Each camera has unique selling points that the other camera doesn't have; both are excellent in their own way. For me, the most important reason to have both cameras is the be able to use dual stabilisation when using its own brand of lenses. Again both Olympus and Panasonic have some excellent/unique lenses that are very complementary and worth having. In all honesty, I can't say that either brand is superior to the other, and having two major players in the M43 field ensures healthy competition that benefits all M43 photographers. The Olympus 12-100mm and Panasonic 50-200mm (paired with the E-M1 mk2 and G9) are a fantastic duo for landscape photography.

To be honest -> it was nice to watch you guys walking around and having a good time. But a real comparison might be quite different. One of the main questions would be about the af-quality or are there high iso differences - f.e. Is there an important difference in DFD-technology compared to Olympus? By the way - if you shoot pictures it would be nice if they would be comparable. We all know that these mft-flagships will produce great quality but the difference is important. With this in mind (I own the G9, a PEN-F and the first M1) you should talk about how Olympus and Panasonic care about their products. While Olympus pushes out the V3 Firmware with lots of new features for the M1 Mark II Panasonic released the V1.3 - just to make a new lens work - no new features at all. And you didn't speak about the incredible sensitive shutterrelease button on the G9 at all - a "thing" lots of users don't like at all.

As far as I can tell the only thing better about the Olympus is the weight with slightly better focusing and the video resolution is higher. Other than that the G9 is superior in every other way for the stills photographer. Although as we know, those differences turn out to be more marginal than you first think. But the G9 in my opinion still rates as the best overall MFT camera on the market. Olympus kind of fell on it's sword by moving into the specialist sports/wildlife arena with the E-M1X because it seemingly didn't learn anything from the G9. However, it's all semantics as Olympus still make great and innovative cameras and keep the MFT format strong and formidable in the marketplace.

I got a Pana G1 soon after it came out around ten years ago and have had both Pana and Oly equipment in a mix. One thing that has irritated me for a long time is the sometimes lack of compatibility between Oly and Pana. They do share system and then I as a customer should also get things that works in a system. Like now, there is the problem with weaker UV-filter in Oly bodys making Pana lenses not work so good in certain areas. And the dual IS does not work between the brands. And not the DFD. And not the aperture ring and so it goes. I feel it is a stupid marketing fight between them instead of making sure they fight the other systems instead. This was one of the reasons I went to Sony.

The Olympus images seem to have less dynamic range (likely just processing) and a more grungy look, maybe Peter was using a filter? My gear is about 50% Panasonic, 30% Canon, and 20% Sony. I've slowly been adding to the Lumix side as the size to performance ratio is more in line with my preferences. I would’ve liked to see more of a comparison between autofocus. The PDAF on the Oly is what’s drawing me to it. The autofocus on the G80 wasn’t especially confident to me. Single AF was ok, if not quite good; however CAF was a struggle. I’m not a sports photographer but trying to track my children when they’re running around for example had a very low hit rate. GX8 and 25mm is great for street photography I am having a heart time choosing I love the G8 and looking at the G9 with status display and 6 K makes me want to buy it on the other hand I now own the Oly 60mm. I respect Olympus history and find it a sympathetic brand... Some My Friends at Fotoclub Zillertal Tyrol Austria do love and own the Olympus OMD1 mk2 and make great pictues with it. 2 QUESTIONS❓❓❓ Can the G9 do focus stacking in RAW like the OLY mk2 or just in a boiled down 8mp JPEG❓ Why on earth does the cheaper Lumix 91has live Composite like the Olympus live view and the G9 doesn’t will there be aa Firmware Update for that If only JPEG for the G9 I have to buy an Olympus Question two is less important but still live composite is a benefit HELP ME PLEASE❓🤔🤔🤔

The G9 can do focus bracketing in RAW, but can't combine the photos in camera. You have to combine the photos later in Photoshop or some other application. So far the G90 is the only Lumix to have the Live comp and I don't know if it's coming for any other models.

sulantoblog Thanks so much you 2 Finnish Heroes Sorry Peter but it will be the Lumix G9 for me... Which has some advantages for me like similar menu structure and better compatibility with the (I need to safe money again) wish lens the awesome ❗️ Leica 100-400 But hey Peter not so sad I bought a Olympus 60mm lens yesterday😍 And well I cannot guarantee not buying other Olympus lenses in the Future Cool you are both Finnish at Fotoclub Zillertal (Tyrol Austria) who has a pro photography service for BtoB... Which is quite cool since he is an expert on Lightroom too. All other members use Photoshop... But in my Opinion Lightroom is more than sufficient in for Photographers (both Hobby and Pro) in 80/90 % percent of the cases.... What is your take on this. Question❓ Which SD cards make sense for the G9 With Top cameras. like the G9 and the the OM d1 one does not want to lower the performances by using inferior SD cards... On the other hand SD cards can be very fast but also very expensive and my G9 takes two to tango What makes sense here and what is a waste of money or over the top Kiitosja rakkaus tervehdys Tirolilta👍 (hope google translate did well here🤔)

@@PeterVlutters I've had good experience with Sandisk cards, but make sure the card is fast enough for your purposes. I can't give you any specific card, because there are so many of them. I have Sandisk Extreme 300mbs cards, but I think so fast is not necessary.
