The most amazing feature of this camera is you can do mobile live-streaming which is revolutionary as no camera on the market is capable of this (most streamers use a phone to livestream). And of course you get all the video and photo capabilities of a pro level camera (I have used the original GH5 extensively and loved it). I say this without embellishment, this camera has blown my mind.

A very useful review! I can see that live streaming over mobile 5G being tremendously useful for journalism, live to the studio from a very compact 'OB' set-up. The launch price is £/$1000 less than the announced price for the GH6, so very cost effective too (especially when that launch price inevitably drops with time). Might be worth remembering it's a pretty handy stills camera too!

Fantastic overview, Gordon, and thanks for being one of the few who actually showed the live streaming function in action! I’m wondering how you feel about Chris and Jordan’s conclusion over at DPReview TV, that this Mark II is more about updating the processing to enable future updates, thus squeezing more out of existing (and admittedly aging) hardware. I think that dovetails into my argument for Micro Four Thirds, where I feel the sensors and lenses are fine, but updating the processing could help keep the system relevant.

Hi Gordon, thanks for the video, especially that S5 comparison! Although it looks like there was more NR in the GH5M2 shots. Could you tell us what AF settings were you using for each segment?

All the GH6 needs is some of that buttery smooth AF in both video and photo, with perhaps a surprise vid res bump, then we’ll have a beast on our hands. I wouldn’t be surprised if it has a fan like it’s bigger brother.

ISO 4000 is the 2nd gain channel on the S5. It's so damn clean. I use it all the time.

That was a great review! S5 owner, and happy with it, but if I was a m43 owner I would wait. Biggest upgrade was the livestreaming. Then again that could be a pretty big upgrade for some people. Keep it up with the reviews! Great and informative!

What reason can there be they not they go for the gh5s sensor, to much work for a Mark 2? I feel like the gh6 must preform at least same as the gh5s in low light situations, if not I think its good night for Lumix... 🕵

I think the changes on the GH5ii make it more valuable. Although AF wise, I had the S5 and did a lot of AF tests only to be disappointed in that it was still unreliable. One day the S5 AF performed quite well. The next, it would hunt around despite no change in the subject's position or camera position. So, I would expect the same may be true of the GH5ii AF. I'm hoping the GH6 will justify it's $2.5K price. It looks promising, but, I will wait for your review before moving forward. Thanks for this video.

Great informative film Gordon. I was going to buy a GH5 earlier in the year and then didn't, so now I find myself at the start of September waiting on the GH6 I think? ...Or considering an S5. This MK2 is a great looking and capable camera, but you have raised some good points when it put alongside a similar price point Full Frame S5. I will be using it primarily for video work. Any thoughts welcomed. :-)

I’ll continue with my GH5 for video and will wait for the new OMD em1xii or the em1iv for photos. Late 2022 I will probably buy the GH6. The GH5ii Seems to be for many people a great choice right now. The iso performance is much better compared with the GH5

I am hoping for a Mark II version of the GH5S. I like this update and I have been planning to buy a GH5S this year.

Hi Gordon, thanks for the awesome review as always. Just a suggestion. Could you please add thorough dynamic range test for video on your comparison review? Like the one on CineD with the xyla21 chart. I think this is a very important information comparing video centric cameras like these ones.

Great review and this is a very compelling camera. Mainly so because of the live streaming option, the ability to do this, pretty much anywhere is a great idea. I wonder, how will competitors respond? Do you think, say, the X-T4 or A7c would get a firmware update? Will the heat and recording limits of the X-T4 be an issue, maybe the X-S10 may be updated? Lastly, the S5, being around the same price point, would this be a camera that could be updated? Either way, I'd definitely be interested in the GH5 II. The GH6 may be a better camera in the long run, but it is also going to cost a lot more. Interesting play by panasonic, this is a reasonable upgrade by the sounds of things.

Best, most comprehensive review so far. There's one thing I cannot find an answer on, though: Did Panasonic update the HDMI spec on the GH5II to enable open-gate ("6k") over the HDMI cable? This isn't possible on the GH5 because it's stuck with the earlier HDMI spec that won't allow more than 4k.

It is worth noting that the light weight of mft lens and camera is very usefull for the workers and the not so strong - compare the weight of a full frame plus 600mm lends (or even a 150-600). Keep up the good work :=) How does it compare with the G9 for photo and fil,?

I'm super interested in the live streaming fonction if you can record at the same time. Can you shoot UHD and stream at the same time ? If not I really hope the GH6 will be able to do it... It would be a game changer for me : i'm shooting sport events and would love to offer short live streams while recording, for example at the start of the race, or when i'm following the head of the race.

I have 2 S1s and a S1H. I used to have a GH5S and some G85s so I still have a bunch of glass. I think I'm gonna wait for the GH6.

Gordon, the lenses. You are forgetting about them. Using the GH5.2 and FF S5, is wholly and a totally different game. When you add the cost and size of the FF lenses, the S5 stops making sense for many, and there is no way in the world that lenses like 10-25/1.7 will ever be available for S5. But GH5.2, with access to plenty of tiny m43 lenses, is a mobile powerhouse.

Hey, For the outdoor Live Streaming, how much upload speed is needed? Is 5Mbs enough for lag-free streaming?

M4/3 Is a very mature system. There are a lot of lenses and cameras in the used market that can go very very cheap. I think going in m4/3 is a good opportunity to get good specs with little money. Even m4/3 low end cameras with two lenses bundle can be bought very cheap. I know maybe they aren't image quality level of Sony or Canon full frame mirrorless or Fuji medium format and m4/3 never be that good. But in price / quality ratio the system is very good.

Hi Gordon a little unrelated but your one of 2 or 3 I trust for accurate information, will you be testing the new Tamron 11-20 2.8 for Sony e-mount apsc?

Lumix G9 II well refined like this new GH5 at a fair price w'd be a great m4/3 stills camera, there will be GH6 and maybe new m4/3 generation but for the moment can be a nice refresh not only for the GH5, I hope so.

This is possibly one of the most comprehensive reviews of the streaming feature on the GH5 II I've seen! Do you find that the GH5 II has better preamps than the GH5? Your GH5 II audio sounded quite a bit cleaner than the audio I get on my GH5 with the same mic.

Gordon, with all the fancy new stream features, one would think Panasonic should have also improved WIFI streaming with a mobile phone and the Panasonic app. But is that true? More specifically, when I use the Panasonic app with my GH5, resolution is low, and when shooting HLG, brightness is very low too. But the biggest problem of all is that once I've recorded something, when I later want to play it back on my iPhone using the Panasonic app, the resolution is very low, audio loses sync with video, and sometimes the video stops altogether. I certainly hope they have address that, because I use that feature all the time to start and stop recording of my GH5 when I film myself seated from a good distance from the camera. If they can make "streaming" work as good as I saw in your video, surely WIFI streaming should be better too. I'd love to hear if the GH5II addresses that.

Hello mate I got the gh5 and I had a 12-60 mm lens HES12060 and the lens broke me at the base. Which two lenses would recommend for photos and video . I'm unprofessional. Thanks for an answer.

Can you check if the GH5 Mark2 is able to output HDMI and USCB while showing the image on the LCD screen? For example with the RS2 and a Ninja V or the Raveneye. Now I'm using the GH5 and as soon as I plug in the HDMI and the usbc the LCD Screen turns black. Would love to hear from you

I have a GH5 II and it’s amazing. Used it for a full day vlog (using AF-C face tracking) and it performed amazingly. Vlog is up on my channel if you’re interested in seeing how it performed. Switching to this for a vlogging/KZfaq camera coming from a Sony A6400.

An advertisement for a product that's relevant to the video - there's a turn up! The GH5 and GH5II are about £1k cheaper than the predicted GH6 price. Makes the S5 a bit of a steal with raw video output.

For me is the S5 the winner because low light :) I also did a video about these both cameras :)

My on camera monitor on my S5 gets no signal in playback mode only. It works fine in Live View mode. Any idea why? Thanks.

WOW THE GH5 I looks better than the II and even has more detail being resolved! In the grey areas the ii completely eradicates the imperfections in the corners. I guess it's the algorithm for smoothing.

This might actually be the A7III killer, the new best camera for solo filmmaker without going bankrupt =)

Good review, I think it should have been released at least a year ago. Reviewers seem more positive on GH5II than on the S5 concerning AF...

Use a tool to edit the exif data if you want to use the raw files in Lightroom etc.

Not to forget S5 supports ProRes Raw video, while the GH5 II don't. For that reason alone, I prefer the GH5S over the GH5 II right now.

I agonised over purchasing the G7. Now that's no longer in production, I'm now torn between the GH5 and the S5. Your review, though the best and finer detailed I have watched so far, has not helped my indecision!! It's not like it's really a choice based on cost.

Were you using autofocus on the couch? The books on top look to be pulsing just like the original GH5 suffers from.

GH5II = 647g. A7SIII = 614g. Sony also has a bunch of light affordable zooms and primes. If you can afford the A7SIII, it's better to get that.

Needed at least 10bit 4:2:2 internally - combine this with the AF and it’s just trash

The autofocus on the book in the background is very distracting to me me, I'm not even on a big screen. Panasonic cameras have good video features but really lack a more reliable phase detection based autofocus.

Not so surprisingly, I guess, S5 still blows GH5 II away thanks its bigger sensor size.

The text of the book behind you is “pulsing” like crazy (throughout the video). I cannot believe that Panasonic is sticking by the DFD focus technology. It clearly does not work too well, and new iterations of their releases are not addressing the issue. I really wanted to love Panasonic, however, their refusal to address this key issue is quite offputting.

Why buy a mkii when the GH6 has already been announced?

I wish Pana luck - 43 is dying and their FF is DOA. Nothing against a quality company but I can't see much of a future for either of their systems. Sorry Gordon - great review.

Question from a newbie: I want to create close up videos of birds eating seed off the deck in my backyard very similar to this example ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jqqidZiUmZPHaY0.html ). I want to run the video camera for very long periods of time so it must resist overheating so that is why I am considering a Panasonic GH5ii but I am concerned about Panasonic's autofocus. Do you think this type of video could be created with manual focus ? Do you think the autofocus of the Panasonic GH5ii is good enough for this type of video ? ( If you think there is a better camera or camcorder option than the Panasonic GH5ii I would be grateful for any advice. I know the Sony A7Siii is also a good option but it is pretty expensive. ) Thank you for your help.
