Hi guys! In today's video, I'll share my experience with the Lumix S F1.8 prime lenses for L-Mount cameras. Specifically, I'll talk about the Lumix S 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm F1.8 prime lenses. These lenses are fantastic. I like using them in manual focus both for photography and videos because they're lightweight, compact, and sharp. Unfortunately, I don't see myself using these lenses for serious video work due to an optical flaw that is digitally corrected in-camera. I wish I had known this before I bought these lenses, and that's why I'm making this video for all of you. I hope you appreciate honesty. Thanks for watching, and I'll see you in the next one. Ciao!

These lenses are really designed with in-camera corrections in mind. For low budget gigs, use these lenses and record internally so the system as a whole can do what it was designed for. For high-end gigs you may record externally but then you'll need lenses that have all corrections implemented optically.

Thanks for sharing! That’s extremely helpful to know. I use the 50mm and 85mm as workhorses for two cam interviews, which work fantastically (that is in manual focus and h264). However, I’ll be very cautious using those with ProRes RAW from now on! Looking forward to watching your 24-70mm/f2.8 review. I’m using it at work for both photo and video and love it. The only thing I’m not so stoked about is the relatively lose focus throw. It is not so easy hit the right mark when manually focusing video…curious about your experiences.

Thanks for watching! You shouldn't have problems with interviews, even if you film in ProRes RAW, as long as you keep the camera fixed. You will have more problems with B-Rolls, where you will notice weird prospectives (not a problem if you're dealing directly with the clients). Stay tuned for the review of the 24-70! Love this lens 😍

And the colour science on the s5ii is a lot worse. Everyone’s lips are bright pink and that’s not always good. Also he said the af lenses are only temporary.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'll be fine for many years with the cameras I have. I enjoy more to focus with manual focus lenses. I simply shared a reality check, about the AF performances, for the people that are interested in buying this combo. Cheers!

The AF of the S5 II is also only good(ish) for video. It's a mess for photography. I an totally fine with manual focus for many occasions, BUT the S5 doesn't have a suitable EVF or screen for critical focus. It is the reason I sold all Panasonic gear except for the 24 105 and 35 1.8 (maybe S5 III 😂).

Ciao Luca, thank you for sharing your experience! I love your videos. Can this behaviour be compared to the one of the S24-105 or is it much stronger? And which manual lenses do you prefer to use?

Thank Francesco! Ironically, the 20-60mm doesn't have this problem and I believe that's the same for the 24-105mm f4, but I'm not sure about it! My favorite manual lenses are Leica R, Zeiss Classic and the new Meyer Optik Gorlitz...They're all having a different look and, because I work as DoP/Director, I can't stick with only one brand of lenses 😅

When I see what's happening at 4:30 I'm laughing 😅. Just buy the s5 ii and you will never see this bad autofocus. In my opinion nobody should buy a lumix camera older than s5ii

Hmmm, very interesting. I just so happen to have the exact same set of lenses that you've mentioned and I even gave it a try while watching your video. I don't really see the same focus breathing as you are experiencing at 6:30. Mine stays at the same place throughout the whole manual focus length. Mind you that I'm fairly new to photography in general so it might be that I'm missing something. Also, I've purchased the S5II +35, 50 and 85mm 3 weeks ago, so it might be that I just have a newer revision of those lenses. I also haven't noticed that much chromatic aberration, but again I'm fairly new to this. Cheers 🍻

The lenses are digitally corrected for the focus breathing distortion. If you film in RAW, you will notice the problem. Thanks for watching!

That's what I was looking for!!! I'm same s5+bRAW user. I find that IBIS works best with no distortion lenses (for example 15mm) and horrible with lenses which have distortion (and because of rolling shutter post stabilization also isn't perfect, if even possible for wide angle or dynamic shots). But anyway I don't see better options for individual film maker now.

I have been starting searching this issue when I saw a review from Chris and Jordan back when they are at DPreview compared Sigma and Lumix 24 and 35mm lens, but cannot figure out what happen exactly, thanks for your explanation, I may still consider some of their f1.8 primes, as the new 100/2.8 looks really interesting to me (300 grams macro lens with f2.8), hopefully that one don't have the same problem, and I don't shoot RAW for now, so it is a tiny bit ok to me. Thanks to your serious and knowledge reveals. have a nice day!

Yeah I had exactly the same! When I watched that comparison video I was very disoriented by that warped focus pull on the Lumix S lens ahahah. Maybe rent some of these lenses first, or buy them from a store where you can return within a few weeks. I think almost everyone can live with this big amount of distortion in wide angle lumix s lenses...I'm used to shoot with zeiss and leica lenses, that's my problem and that's why it's too noticeable for my eyes 😅

Focus Breathing exists in the mechanical part of the lens. How is the codec impacting the breathing? Is it a setting in the camera?

I think it may be sample variation, my 50mm and 85mm S are very sharp wide open, much sharper than my 35mm F2 Sigma or my M43 25mm/45mm Olympus Pro. And the AF is super fast and accurate on the S5II, they are bad only on the S1/S5/S1H.

Yes, it seems like there are some copies of lenses that aren't performing at 100%. I had 4 50mm f1.8, 2 were good, 1 had very bad and harsh bokeh and the other one had strong blue fringing and astigmatism....

@@LucaBono.Studio It rarely does, that's why I think it's important to point it out. I'd ask anyone who expects ~500€ glass to perform like ~1000€ glass whether they're nuts. 😅 It's also about use cases. I'm about to get a used 35mm for 25€. Do I expect to ever shoot anything with it? Hell no. I need it to test field of view and dof, to figure out whether a decent 35mm would be useful for me. Thanks for letting me know that the 50mm has the least distortion!

Thank you Luca for this review. I have the 50 and 85mm lenses. There are many reviewers that actually rave about the lack of focus breathing with this line of lenses. I can't recall any that mentioned that this was due to digital correction in camera. Not a problem with in camera recording but something to be very careful about with external recorders. Post pandemic I haven't been doing much video work with my mirrorless cameras but when I did I always recorded to an Atomos recorder and backed up internally. I'd then hand off the Atomos drives to the client. Good to know this. Thanks again!
