In this video I ran through a bunch of the variable frame rates and slow motion settings on the Panasonic S1H to see how the 4:2:0 8-bit codec held up and to see which picture profile gave me the best results under the circumstances. This was not a scientific test by any means, so take it for what it is.
Let me know if you've found other picture profile settings that work well in these modes -and feel free to check out the little cooking show at the end of this video that was made with some of the test footage I shot.
Shout out to Rockbottom (IG: @rkbtm_mtl) and Eric Martinez (IG: @welding.martinez).

For the noise, this is normal in Log images, and comes down to how you expose it. In general, if you're not measuring off a grey card overexpose (don't clip your highlights, of course) and then when you underexpose in post, you'll lose the noise. Even if you're seeing noise when properly exposed, that'll be in the shadows, and once you stretch your shadows down dark, it should disappear. Finally if you are exposing off a grey card and you're still seeing noise where you don't want it, again, overexpose, and then drop it in post, and your noise will go with it. This is part of shooting Log.

Amazing footage, especially the second commercial! Not using any log setting for an 8bit footage indeed makes a perfect sense. As an S1H owner I'll definitely be taking a note of that. P.S. loved the music in the first one, it had that Jon Hopkins - "abandoned window" feel

for some reason, reading the specs on BH photo, i thought the S1H could only go up to 120fps in full hd, how are you getting it to 180fps and in 4k?

Geez, the footage is so clean! I hope you pick up an S5 and make some tutorials for noobs like me, haha. Just got one bc the S series IQ made me curious and it's the least intuitive camera I've used. I think there's an opportunity to grow via the S5 niche. Keep the videos coming!

I'm not too savvy on this, but would it be possible to get cleaner footage at high frame rate using an external recorder? Would that mitigate the 8bit log noise problem?

@BryanWilkat

Oh yeah man, definitely. The Natural profile if you turn the Noise Reduction all the way down, has gotten me the best low light video footage so far. I've shot stuff at 4000iso or higher than looks soooo clean with the Natural profile!

Crazy Clean! Question about ISO. Did you find a sweet spot in it Iso range shooting at such high speeds?
@BryanWilkat
@BryanWilkat 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah man, because of the dual native ISO, if you need more than 1600iso I suggest it's better to bump up to 4000iso and then close down your f-stop to compensate. You can see this easily yourself if you scroll through all the ISO's with a lens cap on, you'll see the noise get progressively more noticeable and then when you hit 4000iso it's clean again, as if you were shooting in the hundreds.

Honestly, pretty much any time I have to shoot 120fps (or higher, on other cameras like Sony's), I always turn off Log because the higher number of frames per second needs a higher bitrate to maintain the same image quality you expect to see at 24/30fps. Unfortunately, that's the trade off when you buy a

Any thoughts or feedback on shooting lowlight in the higher resolutions at 24p? Just curious if vlog is the preferred low light profile when the footage is slowed down and of higher resolution and bit depth, or if vlog should only be used with this camera in daylight/good light scenarios. Thanks
@BryanWilkat
@BryanWilkat 4 жыл бұрын
Log profiles are notoriously noisy, I personally don't use them for extreme low light scenarios on any camera. They always look the best in controlled lighting situations (like on a set, where you're using lights so you can set the exposure you want) or if you're shooting outside. For low light on this particular camera, I really like the Natural profile or the Cine D profiles. I also recommend that if people use profiles other than Vlog on this camera, to manually turn down the noise in the PP setting because when it's at the default setting of 0, it's adding an in-camera noise removal that will give you soft, muddy looking footage when you crank your ISO up.

Hi Bryan, every time I try to shoot 120fps or higher on s1H I get lots of noise, and forget about Vlog and VFR, tons of noise, how did you get that nice picture without the noise? Thanks for sharing!
@BryanWilkat
@BryanWilkat 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the super late reply, did you figure it out? I tend to stick near the native ISO's, so 640 ISO and lower. If I need to push my ISO higher than 1000, I'll skip all the increments and jump right to 4000 which is the other native ISO. At 4000 any noise you had will completely disappear and it'll be as clean as it was at 640 ISO. Hope that helps!

Curious, doesn’t the s1h offer 10-bit 422 in 1080 120fps? Why not us that for v-log? Beautiful footage either way man!
@BryanWilkat
@BryanWilkat 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No, I wish there was a slightly richer codec but sadly the highest codec in 120fps is 4:2:0 10-bit Long GOP and you have to conform it in post -otherwise there's a 120fps variable frame rate option that shoots 4:2:0 8-bit and conforms it in-camera but there's no audio recorded in that mode and the compression is much more detrimental to the image. (FYI there's also a super 35 crop in 120fps modes) There was a new firmware update (2.0) that supposedly fixed some Vlog banding but from my initial tests, there's still some image issues that they need to address on this camera.

Yeah up to 144fps it's full frame. After that it crops to like a Super 35mm frame. Still really nice but from 144-180fps you really need to make sure you have a LOT of light!

This is ridiculously clean compared to my tests on the original firmware. Mine was unusable and it was shot in full sun. GH5s was far cleaner. I did, however, have a dud body which was returned to Panasonic and they sent it to Japan for investigation.
