Fantastic video as always Caleb!! I am speechless, the Panasonic S1H is truly a phenomenal camera!!! Has everything you could possibly want in an indie filmmaking camera!! The new flip out fully articulating and tilt up LCD is fantastic and so flexible, anamorphic, intuitive menu, amazing EVF, V-Log, Dual Native ISO, rugged weathersealed body (still am amazed they achieved this), unlimited record time, 4k up to 60fps, 5.6k, 6k, 1080p up to 180fps full sensor width with audio with full manual exposure control, and so so much more!! I personally think this is worth every penny! In a way, if one thinks of this as a cinema camera in the same league at BMPCC6K, this is an amazing option for a filmmaker that wants a more versatile and complete camera that has everything you need internally (except raw) it's much more flexible in terms of the cameras ergonomics and possibilities for where and when you can film (as this is weathersealed and rugged, along with being very user friendly) Sorry, long comment. I'm just blown away by what Panasonic is offering! And so happy to hear they are still continuing with MFT cameras, such as the GH6.

Always enjoy your thorough + salient coverage. This a dream camera, though, the SIGMA fp may be more accessible in the near term (I'd love to see how they play together given the matching mount.) 8:19 the Mirrourless native L-mount version of the ART14-24mm does take small rear filters; not sure if that's what you mean, but it's available already as long as you can get the filters. 10:29 the S1R stablemate has 4K60 for its full frame video mode (x1.09) though, obviously less robust footage. Thanks :)

Great review I just recently seen this and said game changer!! I definitely think it’s a great buy, if you’re a filmmaker who’s constantly shooting, or you’re going to need to rent this hardware out in order to recoup your cost!! It’s something I’d buy knowing that I don’t need anything other than a good lens, some UV filters, tripod, and good script!! I’m curious to the weight of the camera itself, it looks bulky, and wondering if I’d still be able to run and gun style film making!!

Many films are still being recorded in 2K, but what can you do...people want 4K and 6K and 8K, without realizing that it's not such a big jump unless you absolutely need to punch in and reframe. Arri Alexa cameras don't even have a true 4K sensor, they shoot in 3.2K and upscale (if I'm not mistaken on the values). Bit depth and dynamic range are a lot more important than resolution and megapixels, but 4K and 6K are pretty easy ways to advertise your camera as the best, and most people believe that. Playstation and Xbox did the same with their last generation; instead of pushing the consoles to achieve 60FPS, they went with 4K while most people were still using FullHD TVs and monitors.

@Abe S Depends on what set you're speaking of. A lot do not need anything beyond 4k...hell it's not even really 4k as the Alexa was 2.8k upscaled until the Alexa LF. A lot of the need for 6K, 8K etc wouldn't exist back in the day as people had definite plans with their shots whereas now they'll often use the extra resolution to reframe the shot. So no, they don't "need" it. David Fincher however does use it (among others).

I have the Gh5 and Gh5s, and a bmpcc4k. Gh5s is great for lowlight and 240fps, even with the crop. Gh5 has '6k' at 4:3. 6k is going to be used for cropping in by most people. Rendering and uploading 6k will be crazy. However; 6k full frame bokeh, looks amazing. All of that WITH IBIS and future raw? This would be a super easy buy, but I just want some lens choices. I have a library of m4/3 lenses and EF lenses. The L mount lenses are sooo expensive. The sigma MC-21 L-mount -> Ef-mount adapter doesn't support AFC for EF mount lenses. However; this still looks pretty amazing. But the c200 has amazing autofocus, 4k raw internal, NDs as well, no ibis, crap low light, canon color science, and it's huge. Also the black magic ursa 4.6k g2, 300 FPS 1080p, 120fps at 2k, and 4.6k fullframe raw, and, great low light, and nds, XLR outputs, but no AF at all. I'll be curious to see how the RAW of the panasonic does. 6k for a 'vlogging' type camera is crazy. I can't wait to see your review of it! It's hard out here in that gear world. Your job must be awesome :D

Joshua Fluke so interesting to see #grindreel here! This camera has reached into cinema territory, and it’s probably much more accessible to go that route for video. I'm a GH5 user & big fan of Panasonic. However, I need/want a better auto-focus system. I do move back and forth when recording to some degree, and I do most of my video shooting in lower light (lightboard training videos mostly). The combination of lower light work and lack of great autofocus in video mode has me considering a FF with better AF. After all the reviews of the currently available systems I'm still curious about Sony. I don't need another camera, but I'd switch or add another hybrid system that's great (in video mode) for low light, auto-focus & (stills mode) shallow depth of field for portraits. Great review - thanks for sharing your thoughts, Caleb

Thank you for calling out that crippling BS. I hope their response is just to fix it with a firmware update. Doing things like leaving off a mic jack on entry level is one thing. It's a physical object, and costs money and potentially size. Or losing features that require a bit more processing power where the lesser camera actually has a less powerful processor, well that makes sense. But doing things like, say, 1080p30 but no 1080p24!? That kind of thing just shouldn't be done. (did canon fix that, BTW?) Either add actual features, or find cost savings for your cheaper camera. Software crippling is a real NVidia move. (for those that don't know, the older Quadro cards were actually the exact same card, but with different software. They got in trouble for that). We are waiting for the "perfect" camera here. I use my Sony a6000 sometimes, because it can actually focus during videos. And then we use our Canon 60d for shooting images. It shoots nice video, but doesn't work well in situations where your subject is moving and it's live so you can't plan your shot.

wondering now if i should switch from my s1h to the newly announced EOS 5R. Curious to what you think! I know its still very early and they haven't even released the full specs. There are some little things I love about the s1h, like using shutter angle vs shutter speed, the XLR Adapter, luminance spot meter, ergonomics, etc.

Hello, do you know why you can't shoot anamorphic in full frame? Only about the desqueeze? If I want to de squeeze from my Ninja and shoot with full frame lenses in full frame mode? Is there a technical reason why I should crop? Thanks

wondering which lens do you use for Gh5 / GH5s ? Im thinking to buy a viltrox speed booster + sigma 18-35 but thinking should I invest all my future lens on canon mount to use with speed booster or get the native lens for m43. Please help me out :(

I wish the S1 or S1R would get the anamorphic de-squeeze modes in a firmware update. Was de-squeeze available in photo mode as well?

Hi, I noticed some wobbling on the anamorphic shots, do you think that's because of the stabilization?

Was the Atlas 50mm able to work with out vignetting? If it doesn't I guess that means that the anamorphic mode puts it close to Open gate size? I have to put on the LF extender to not get vignetting unless i drop to S35 on my A7R2, but it doesn't have an anamorphic mode. I'm waiting to see what happens between this, the unicorn ; ), and the sigma fp for a FF that will give me some form of raw. Then I'll build a rig around it. With the atlas lenses you do need follow focus, the throw is so long.

I'll keep my GH5 and BMPCC6k. If you have a choice, get the Blackmagic and use the extra money to build up a kit for it. For the price of the S1H you can get a BM6K and a smallhd focus or a gimble, etc. I'm sure the IBIS doesn't work with all lens like the GH5 so a gimble covers you and nothing beats a larger screen monitor.

Ok, so it seems as though this is a really good camera for video. One downside I'm hearing is the autofocus. Other than that, this camera seems to have what I've been needing. I've used the bmpcc4k and it was nice, BUT I shoot stills just as much as I shoot video, so I've been looking for a hybrid. I personally own the a6500 now and just haven't upgraded to anything yet since I haven't seen anything with upgrading to. But with the S1H, I want to upgrade. But it's so new that I'm still waiting to hear and see how it'll do with use. I'm giving it two months to see how popular it gets and if it's worth getting. Sure, it doesn't have RAW. For some projects it would be nice to have raw, but that's a heck of a lot of storage needed. Do I personally need it? Not really. But it has 14 stops DR, 10bits, so it seems like the one??

I AGREE! ALL OF US who have already invested in a Panasonic S1 it would be A W E S O M E to see in the next FIRMWARE UPDATE to allow more features, especially manual exposure on higher frame rates. Luv the S1H! Next time I'll be smarter and wait for all models in a new line are released before buying! Thx for the info Caleb

Hey Caleb, I have a gh5s and gh5 when I plug my ninja v into the hdmi output and a gimble into the ctype usb I loose my camera screen. Its like you cant use both at the same time. From what I've read it's a gh5 issue. I'm thinking of upgrading to the S1h, do you know if the same thing happens with this camera? Saying all that any idea idea if an S2h is coming soon.. 🙂 Thanks for always sharing your knowledge. Mark

Hi man I'm from Brasil so everything is almost 5x expensive here, my a7s is already dying so my question is, If you need to buy your next camera for the next 5y and have $3k to spend on it, what camera you would buy? (working for video production) or do you thing that just adding an atmos ninja V it will give the a7s a new life? :)

I agree. No reason NOT to allow manual setting in VFR mode on the S1. The S1H still has plenty of reasons to exist without this being a deciding factor.

Amazing camera the S1H, I want one but it's overkill and to expensive for me. I wish the S1 had shutter-angle and not crippled slowmotion, it would be a great compliment to my GH5 as my main photo camera and for video in low light and when I need the dynamic range. Those small changes to the S1 would make it so much better for video and make it a perfect partner to the GH5. Must be an easy fix, but sadly they probably won´t fix it. It would make it a much more affordable camera, without being anywhere near the S1H specs in my opinion.
