I am 55 years old and I have worked in TV for 36 years. Part of that time was spent with an expensive broadcast TV camera on my shoulder. I purchased the S5M2 about a month ago. Anything that I do with the camera will be for my own personal projects. I have no desire to work with an external SSD or large files. The S5M2 shoots in 4K 10-bit video, which is more than enough for any short film, documentary, or music video that I want to work on.

Definitely it'll serve you well! for me the BRAW elevates the image quality even further than what you can achieve internally, but the internal image is still beautiful!

Thank you so much for such an in-depth, real world review. I think the long-form format really gives you time to explore what these cameras have to offer (which is a lot!). And with so much footage to show, with different lens combinations, I really got a sense of the cameras potential. I've been a Lumix user for a while (currently using the GH5 mk2), and I agree with you about Panasonic colours - they are highly underrated by so many reviewers. Panasonic are on a bit of a roll at the moment, and as well as this camera, the G9II is calling out to me... I need to get my GAS under control, and be thankful for what I've got! Thank you again for taking the time to make this - well worth the effort.
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 9 ай бұрын
Honestly comments like this make it worth it - it's a huge amount of work to fit in between my professional client work but I feel like the only real way to test kit is out in the field and capturing proper material to showcase what you can do with kit. I absolutely understand why some people shoot in their backyard or do colour charts - as they might not have the time to do more! Really excited to see what Panasonic does next - will probably test out the G9ii at some point and share my thoughts.

@@EdProsser I'd really be interested in your thoughts on this camera. I truly believe that there is life in the old micro four-thirds dog yet - and heartening to see that Panasonic agree. My only question is, what on earth will they have to put in the GH7 now to make that an attractive proposition..?

Yeah I'd actually really love to get my hands on that cam to see how it compares. From what I see, Fuji has better read out speed, so better motion... but the IBIS is not as good. Not sure how the AF compares between the two, I'm guessing they're similar? Obviously the Fuji is smaller sensor so I recon the main decision is whether you're happy with that or would prefer flexibility of the full frame sensor (which gives option of S35 when needed?. I'd recommend renting / loaning one and just see how you like using either!
@davidsikula3488
@davidsikula3488 9 ай бұрын
I'd really like to hear your opinions on the XH2-S@@EdProsser . Without having tried the S5 II I would say that your projections re: the IBIS and AF are probably correct, but you may like the stacked sensor (noise is quite high at base ISO in FLOG-2 but seems to clean up nicely in post). You may find the image a little overly sharp (perhaps more so than the S5 II bodies), but you seem to have techniques to mediate this. Love what you do on this channel - your work and content is greatly appreciated, and always love the look/aesthetic of your footage.

Great video Ed, many thanks. I wondered, have you experienced moiré with your S5ii X. I’ve seen a few videos with users highlighting issues with moiré. I know unlike S1H the S5ii X doesn’t have a low-pass anti-aliasing filter. I bought the S5ii X but I'm thinking of returning it as I do not want this concern. Many thanks again. I donated to your patreon a year ago (when I was still deciding on a camera) thought I'd found the answer.
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 5 ай бұрын
Hey! I've never had a problem with it personally. I think if you're shooting weddings with a lot of suits it could be an issue, but I also prefer to shoot with vintage glass and diffusion which can also help mitigate it. There is actually a company who will fit the S5 with an OLPF but it's costly around $600-700 and will void your warranty.

Great review and equally beautiful footage to illustrate your points! I don’t mind the length at all :) And I think it’s not only the scope/depth of this review that’s so appealing, but also how it’s crafted: nice typography, great pacing, superb selection of music. I’ve truly enjoyed watching it (from a filmmaking perspective that is)! It’s kinda funny because with this 30 minutes review much valuable stuff is said about the camera’s video capabilities, but those make up just 1/2 the camera: It’s also a great stills camera. I’ve been using the original S5 for the last 3 years or so, both for my freelance work and at my day job in a museum. There I regularly put it through its paces both as video (gimbal, interviews, hand-held, studio) and photo camera (real estate, exhibits, events). I found you really need to push it very hard to reach its limits. Don’t know about you, but when I first decided to buy a camera, I so totally obsessed about the whole decision-making process and probably watched hundreds of camera reviews. Now that I’ve invested quite some money into this system (and the L-mount), things have just gotten substantially better with the release of the mark ii and iiX. I’ve been playing around with the iiX for a couple weeks now and it’s such an awesome addition to my kit as a solo filmmaker. Autofocus alone is changing completely the way I shoot.
@EdProsser

Yes for sure! I mention stills a little in my original S5 and S5 ii reviews - but honestly (regrettably) I just don't take many stills these days - as KZfaq is always pushing me to shoot more and more video(!) - so I don't feel particularly qualified to comment on it's stills ability - although from my limited use it's very nice, as you say! Thanks for checking it out and the lovely feedback, appreciate it!

Your footages is absolutely stunning. I'm trying to decide between an S5iix and the older S1H, and your channel is the first I've seen where the S5iix footage is comparable to the S1H - all the other channels (that I've seen) are so over sharpened looking. If you were choosing between a purchase of a S1H or the S5iix, which way would you lean? Both cameras can be purchased for approximately the same price (by getting a used S1H).
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 7 ай бұрын
That's a really tough question, I'd say the S1H has the edge on image quality over the S5 iix, but you just gain a tonne of useful features in the iix that you don't get in the S1H... I also think shooting RAW on the S5 iix fixes a lot of issues with it. Josh Cameron just put out a vid today doing side by side comparisons between the two cams, if that helps at all. I think you can probably mitigate a lot of the sharpness in the S5 with lens choice, filters and grading...

@@EdProsserThank you for the reply! It’s starting to look like the videos I see from the S1H or BlackMagic cameras look so good (to me) is less about the camera, and more about the person behind it knowing what they are doing. Perhaps it’s just that the operators behind those cameras are just doing more to their footage to get that beautiful look? Like they know better how to expose the shot, get that perfect lighting, select the right filters, and color grade. And perhaps what I’m seeing from all these s5iix reviews is people just shooting in auto mode with stock lenses or something. I think I naively thought I would need to buy an S1H to get that look. Anyways… that’s a long winded way of saying thank you again. I’m going to buy the s5iix and try and work my way up to getting something similar to your look.
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 7 ай бұрын
@@5656565564556564 90% of that look will be user experience, lighting / composition / lens choice. I think the S1H has a softer more organic image that can help, but the S5iix can still produce a beautiful image and I think if you put footage side by side most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference

Another top drawer video Ed. The S5 IIX looks fantastic and the footage you’ve captured with it is nothing short of stunning. Probably the biggest thing I’ve taken away from this is the IBIS wobble is fairly extreme in full frame as opposed to the super 35 mode. For the price of the camera though the bells and whistles make this camera punch well above its weight. Have you used it alongside your EVA or just with the Komodo?
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 9 ай бұрын
Thanks James - yeah if you shoot on anything below 40mm you'll notice wobble if you're moving around - if you're fairly still though it does a great job of eliminating micro jitters. Generally above 40mm it performs really well! Yes I've done a couple of client shoots with the EVA1 pairs really well unsurprisingly, we mostly used the S5iix as a gimbal cam alongside the EVA1 (nothing I can share on my YT unfortunately).

No not all my video, but I use it a fair bit often interchangeably. Yeah I can understand why some photogs could do without... but it's such a video centric camera - the S5 is just too sharp straight out of cam and the new mark 2s seem to have a sharper / harsher image than the mark 1.

Yeah it may be a fringe case sure, but I primarily shoot video on my 4k, 6kg2 and even my OG, and will often mix footage with my S5, and the butter smooth roll off I see in the Blackmagic image just very compatible with Panasonic. V-Log, like you said, is an absolute JOY to grade. Never used a gimbal with Panasonic and it keeps getting better. Don't need the external recordings of the S5iix as I'm really satisfied with the internal long op files. Only thing missing for it to be perfect is OLPF & 4k60fps full frame. I will usually make sure I'm slightly over, maybe a stop but if it's a super sunny day sometimes it can be 2, try not to blow the sky out if it's a cloudy day etc.. As you say - I tend to bring things down in post and the cam tends to have decent highlight roll off - just make sure not to clip highlights and you're good! Usually adjust exposure through ND or VND. I will add it to the list of little tutorials to make tho!

I’m considering the s5iix for hybrid shooting. Like you, I’m a huge fan of softer filmic looks vs the digital sharpness of many modern cams. I love the bmpcc4k image for example. I’ve been wanting for a long time to find a cam with the Blackmagic Hollywood film look, but with the conveniences of ibis and AF. Do you think any Canon cam such as the R5C could achieve the same softer Blackmagic film look, with proper filtration, film emulation and lens choice? Much of what I’ve seen from both canon and Sony on the video side looks so sharp and plasticky and not film like, so I hesitate to go that route. However I’m wondering if the s5iix could do the trick? What do you think?
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 2 ай бұрын
I think honestly any modern cam with the right lenses, filtration, lighting and post production can achieve this now. I guess it might be worth waiting to see if / what gets announced at NAB because a) a new cam might tick that box or b) it might mean a price drop for older cams! Personally I love working with LUMIX cams - watch my latest lighting vid, you can see that the LUMIX S5iix holds up really well against the Komodo

Have you tested the ibis with a 28mm lens? I just ordered the S5ii to pair with my Atlas Mercury 42mm 1.5x - and one of the big reasons is for the anamorphic Ibis … to just have a compact Anamorphic travel camera that I can shoot handheld. So the 42mm Mercury is essentially the width of a 28mm lens … you mentioned 35mm and up having good ibis performance, Idk if you’ve tried a 28mm but I hope this isn’t too wide for the ibis to be useable .. anywho, cheers, best S5 ii X review I’ve seen

It should be okay, but just be careful, I'd say the wider you are the more prone to IBIS wobble it is. So it's great for smoothing small movements but if you're walking around with it you'll see warping etc.

I'm only a few minutes in but you're talking about how you don't like the Lumix being so sharp I think this is because it has such a high megapixel sensor so it can be a hybrid. I'm curious if you've noticed moire? As far I haven't seen you shoot anything that would create that. I've not noticed moire but I know many others have!
