Full disclosure- I work for Panasonic LUMIX I’m the USA. Like your video but I wanted to correct 1 item, the S5II can autofocus in 6K open gate with a monitor connected… you cannot do subject detection or tracking. 1-area, 1-area+, Zone and Full-Area are all available and I usually use 1-area plus for this with good results.

@Mathew Fraser - recently bought an S5II and was really disappointed to figure out after I bought it that the Human/Eye detection does not work in the 6k modes with a monitor connected. Is this a hard issue or could this be fixed in firmware? It's tough to advertise something as pro when it gets crippled by attaching a monitor which is a must for these small cameras.

@@AllThingsFilm1 it can be good but without the human detection modes sometimes it will jump and catch focus on for example the microphone in frame of a talking head.

a7IV user here, I've had a lot of overheating issues myself when shooting in extremely hot climate while on assignment in Africa. When shooting outdors in 37-41C climates it would overheat often but this was before I discussed the option within the menu to allow it to run at higher temperatures. I will see on my next assignment if this change will fix the issue for me.

Most of the early S5 II reviews conducted by other You Tubers were still using pre-production firmware (ver 0.74 ) The firmware that comes with the S5 II is ver 1.0 with so a few of the mentioned issues have already been improved or corrected.

I'm an amateur and love doing landscapes and some video for the company I work at. I have the A4 with 1 Sigma and 2 Tamron lenses. It works great for me and was affordable for sure. So, I'll stick with Sony. I know a couple of wedding videographers and they use and love the Lumix stuff. Thanks for the video, well done

Excellent comparison between two strong cameras. As I mentioned in one of your Shorts, Sony just registered three new cameras. A part of me is hoping one of those cameras is one that Sony has designed to complete with the S5ii at a similar price point. Although, it might be too soon after the release of the S5ii for Sony to have come up with a camera at the S5ii price point. But, if that is the case, then I would go with the Sony since I already have the FX30. May is not far away, and the S5iix drops then. With the S5iix you get external 6K raw at no extra cost, whereas with the S5ii there is a $200 cost for buying the license to record 6K raw externally. Plus, the S5iix allows you to record everything, including 6K raw, to an SSD. Maybe by then, they will have PDAF for external 6K raw. But, we will have to wait and see.

Good info and thoughts here. I think that one of those drops will be the ZV Full Frame (interesting one ;)) and I'd love to see a direct s5ii competitor as well. Certainly an exciting time. Enjoy that FX30! Thanks for adding to these videos with your well-thought comments.

I’m an a7iv user, it’s near perfect, but have heard great things about the LUMIX. We’re at the point where I’m not sure one is better than the other, just different flavors. Spoiled in the best way possible!

You have really constructed a watchable video here. I bet your analytics will show excellent watch time. Can't put my finger on it, but this is one of your best. For me, I have the A7siii and the A7IV, plus a selection of GM lenses. I came from GH5, but couldn't handle lack of good AF. I loved everything about the user experience with Panasonic. I hate to think I would sell my current kit for a new one, with lenses and camera bodies, but it could certainly happen with the next round of Lumix cameras. They just keep getting better. But let's get some aperture rings on those lenses, guys!

Great video man! I started my channel last year with a Sony a6400 and now I’m looking to make the jump to full frame / 10-bit. I’m leaning towards the Panasonic because I do mostly video.. But man it’s a tough decision because Sony autofocus has always been SO GOOD!

I had the a6400 and went to FX30...10 bit makes a huge difference. The one thing the Panasonic s5ii has over the fx30 is the lowlight. Since it is ff it is obviously better.

I had to return the S5ii, I bought it as a hybrid camera however the AF for photography was very inconsistent. Walking subjects I would average a hit rate of 1 in 4 in focus (using the Panasonic 35mm 1.8). With the A74 it was pretty much every shot was perfectly in focus. The AF in video for object tracking was poor too, it would lock on to the object and then lose its focus with a bit of movement. The AF for face/eye was however very good. I just couldn’t trust the AF out of the S5ii, beautiful video image quality though.

@sean, i am curious when people like you talk about "jumping ship" do you just buy a new body and use adapters for your current lenses ? or doe you also replace al your lenses ?? verry helpfull vid btw for someone who is on the market for his first full frame body

Just switched from the a7c to the s5ii. Have been slowly moving more towards video then photos and that 6k opengate was what pushed me over. That real time luts feature has really clutch too not just for videos but for photos too. If just taking casual photos of family its great to get something fast with the style i like without having to edit the raws.

I have a pair of FX30...the only thing I see in the Panasonic is the low light...everything else is fine...but low light does make a big difference depending what you are shooting.

Hey Sean, just a heads up. I have the S5ii. It loses phase detect in 1080p full frame high frame rates. It’s not a big deal to me but I think Panasonic should have included this. Maybe a firmware will resolve this but I’m not sure. The 6K Opengate, 6K (17:9), unlimited DCI 4K, Active Cooling Fan, Ability to import Luts and Incredible IBIS still make it excellent for me. The Boost IS is absolutely insane.

@mathew_pang 24fps and 30fps in 1080p have Phase Detect. Once you go past that (48fps, 60fps, 120fps) in full frame 1080p the camera switches to contrast detect. Not sure if Panasonic/Lumix intentionally crippled this or if its a processor limitation because it can't keep up with the high frame rates while shooting the full sensor. The 6K and 4K modes all have Phase Detect. When you shoot 4K 48fps or 60fps it forces you into an APS-C crop but still retains Phase Detect.

It's just a difference of priorities - S5II is a video 1st camera vs a7iv is a balanced hybrid camera. Today, the Panasonic ecosystem does not meet my needs and the AF history and lack of a solid lens lineup would keep me from leaving Sony. Additionally, I'm a stills 1st user. I use the a7iv but will be moving to the a7rv.

Waiting for the S5 IIX. Caleb is the ONLY S5 II owner that has that odd distortion, so to me it sounds like he has a defective camera and should just get it replaced. As far as autofocus in Open-Gate shooting, I don't think there are any other FF mirrorless cameras that can do this, so you're waiting for a feature that nobody is making. The reason why I would choose the S5 IIX over the A7IV are as follows : 5.9 K and 6 K shooting, along with Open-Gate shooting, Pansonic IBIS that enables you to shoot fairly smooth footage without an external stabilizer, Being able to set the shutter speed in degrees, Being able to record to a USB drive at data-rates up to 1.9 GB/sec, Being able to record in Pro Res formats, Being able to record in Pro Res RAW, Being able to record in Blackmagic RAW, The built-in cooling fan is a guarantee it won't over-heat, the Lumix S prime lens line that are all roughly the same size and weight so you can swap lenses without having to rebalance your camera rig, these lenses all have minimal focus breathing, and are fairly low cost. I expect the S5 II and S5 IIX cameras to be big sellers this year given the feature set they offer at a low price.

I don't have a full frame camera at the moment. I want to switch to full frame for landscape, nature, outdoor portrait, street and travel photography and start playing with video. S5 II sells for 2300 or 2500 (kit) in Switzerland. Sony a7 IV sells for 2000 or 2200 (kit) cheapest offer in spring sale. But normally they cost around the same price. So if comparing it to a7 IV and they both cost the same, is S5 II better? Considering ecosystem, cheap lenses, other available Sony bodies as an upgrade path. 33mpix. Second hand market. I still like the ergonomy, display, video options and IBIS of s5 II better. But it's the only phase detect camera which Panasonic has. So there is nothing to upgrade to at the moment..if you don't like it you're stuck with L mount lenses on the only body with phase detect that Panasonic has. I want to order S5 II with 20-60 mm but I'm not sure it's a rational decision long term due to the Sony and E-mount ecosystem. On the other hand if I get a7 IV I'm worried I'll be regretting it every time when I see the low res screen of a7IV and it's IBIS performance.

I don’t think you can go wrong with either but I might lean toward Sony in this situation. It sounds like you’re looking at photography primarily and I think the a7iv fits well there.

As a full time photographer and videographer the video side is great. Really no complaints but when it comes to the photo side that’s where the S5ii falls short. When using flash there seems to be a delay which is unacceptable. I’ve done a short video on my page showing the issue. Once Lumix addresses this I will be 100% LUMIX. They are aware of this so fingers crossed. But as a do it all camera between A74 and S5ii I have to go with the Sony.

What flash are you using ? This is actually something Sean from Lumix addressed in one of the Live streams and there should be no delay whatsoever, if you use the correct flash, like for example the Godox Speedlite V860III Olympus/Pansonic version with TTL.

@@EmeraldAudiovisual I’m using the same flash as Sean, the Godox for Lumix/Olympus. Sean is aware of this and says they are looking into it. Hopefully it can get fixed with a FW.

@@CarlosAlvaradoPhotography Good stuff. The one thing about Panasonic is, that they really do listen to their users and firmware updates are released frequently to address issues. Canon is slowly picking up on that. Sony .... not really. I'm sure, the Lumix team will get that sorted for you.

I sold my a7IV for the S5II, and couldn’t be happier. The user experience in general is so much better, having Shutter Angle has been a game changer in how I shoot and setup my camera, Frame Markers, Waveforms and the nicer screen have eliminated my need to have a monitor attached. The IBIS is just 🤯🤯🤯, Video Timelapse is something I also wanted in my camera. So no brainer for me.

I’m getting the SIIX for anamorphic support. Sony just doesn’t give us the cinema features (open gate, anamorphic , shutter angle , etc) . I’m still keeping my a7siii , but getting the SIIX 💪🏼

Hey Sean. You actually do get autofocus in 6k open gate with a monitor. You only lose face/eye tracking (as of now.) Just tested it after watching your video.

nice summery, thank you since the AF got worse in the S5 (original), when connecting a monitor (or at least that was my impression) i tested the APP then bought a 100 bucks smartphone. works a treat! - and honestly this is why i can't justify the Mark II having this remote... actually prefer single AF with this setup over Sony and it's "perfect AF" breathing with some lenses like just escaped from hell...matter of preference obviously or the right lens now i wonder if AF would work in open gate with the S5II connected to the APP🤔

Wish Samyang supported L mount because they have a nice set of video lenses but L mount market share isn't enough. The Panny UI and features is impressive...I miss them when using my A7iii

Thank you panasonic, sony a7V is gonna be HARD. Btw does panasonic do gyro data/ stabilisation? If not that's an important factor in weighing the stabilisation systems on both cameras.

I’m in the Canon ecosystem and have the R6. Instead of buying a second body r6 mark ii or r5 I’m really considering selling all my canon gear and going over to the Panasonic LUMIX. I’m a wedding shooter and video first shooter so the mimic s5ii will benefit me greatly. Especially with Canons overheat issues and photo first makes video lack compared to the lumix. The canon obviously produces great images but switching over saves me money but also gives me more value

Been primarily a photographer for the past 7-ish years, but I'm switching over to doing more video work. I've been in Nikon since the beginning and picked up the D850 over a year ago, which I have loved... for photos. Thing is too heavy for video and doesn't really have great video-friendly features in general. Did lots of research the past couple of months to see where I should jump ship and was tossed between these two, actually. I went with the S5II mostly for price, but I also have a strong feeling more people are gonna start using Panasonic with this release, and hence its value will go up. The biggest selling point for me with Sony was the array of lenses available, but I'm hoping in time, we'll see more lens availability from Panasonic. Great video btw! Just subbed

I think there's no need for a person to get the S5 II if they already have the a7iv . The S5 II is targeted to those who don't have a full frame camera yet and are thinking to get one for a cheaper price. Lumix have done an amazing job with the price but I was let down a bit by the fact that in some video settings the camera automatically changes the auto focus to contrast based. I'm using the original S5 and I can say that besides the autofocus it's an amazing camera.

You forgetting the 12 bit 5.9Kp30 RAW out over HDMI of the Lumix. Teamed up with a Ninja V, you can have true cinema specs, 12 bit apple prores raw in your hands. And then, support for anamorphic lenses. One more, the option to record on a SSD over USB.

For photography centric, A74 still win this. The amount of lenses available for E mount is unbeatable. But for video centric, S5ii is the better choice. But you gonna have a hard time choosing lens though especially if your new to L mount.

The a7iv actually does have the ability to match 180 rule. There is a variable shutter setting that lets you set the shutter to 1/120 for 60 fps for example. ☺️ Thanks for the comparison. Great video!

You can get it to 119.9 or 120.6 but you cannot set it to 120 even.

great video congratulations , so the lumix s5 was my first full frame camera , then after a year I got the sony a7iv because the auto focus on the s5 was never reliable , I really like both but the sony auto focus and the variety of lenses is something very good, now I have a problem because I want to sell my lumix s5 to get the lumix s5iiX but everyone wants to pay very little. In short, I love both brands and I see Panasonic taking a leap with better autofocus, but Sony is Sony lol , I'm still going to get the lumixs5iiX 😂 God bless you guys .

What about PDAF in higher frame rates above 30fps?? I've heard PDAF doesn't works in 48/50/60/100/120 FPS both in 1080p & 4k...Is this true?? Does it loses subject detection in these frame rates??

Man! I've had money set aside since before the a7iv finally came out for a new body and a 24-70 2.8 lens. Actually I was waiting for the a7iv to come out. Then the Nikon Z6ii, which came up short, followed by the no third party lens Canon R6ii. All of a sudden, Panansonic sneaks the S5ii/S5iix in with the competition?!? My better camera is a Panny AC160 (11 years old now?), so I'm thinking that color-matching might be somewhat easier when using both? Well, as usual, it's the little more or less features that each company does/doesn't offer that has kept me from spending, what many consider to be a good chunk of money on a new camera body and lens! Why can't a company just go all in on a mid-level body and dominate the competition/market?! The pros will still buy the $5k+ bodies, and the noobs/youtubers will still hover around the $1-1500 mark. Uncropped 4k 60/120 HD 240 with good AF, minimal rolling shutter, good low light performance, etc, etc....

Hi, can lumix s5ii take pictures with godox flash mounted on lumix s5ii? I have a friend's feedback that when I change the parameters on the camera, the screen does not clearly show the exposure, it is still bright without change. As for when changing to AF-C mode, the camera when starting to press to focus seems to be slower than other brands and often jumps around, making it difficult to track the subject in the frame.

I almost bought this camera but I realized Lumix doesn't have small wireless remote control for their cameras. I need it as I am solo content creator and I film myself away from camera. I don't find using mobile app as convenient as small remote. Sony and canon have small remote control. I use it with my canon all the time.

I have Nikon 24-120 f4. Mediocre sharpness, soft wide open, lack of microcontrast. Nowhere close to my Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 and far away from my Nikon primes. Selling on CL now.

I have both, the IBIS is way better on the S5II and the AF is slightly better on Sony . BUT video standard profiles are much better on Sony, more details and less noise/Chroma noise reduction, this is the first time Panasonic uses so much image processing with their standard profiles and it's very bad. V-Log is the only profile to use now and it's a shame.

To such a comparison I don't think anyone should jump to Panasonic if he already got an a74. But if you don't have either of them and need one, the Panasonic is worth to considering for the quality and good price.

Am anxious for the soon-to-be released Panasonic-Lumix S1II Full Frame Camera with 4K 60fps full frame & hoping for higher mpx, super-duper auto focus, stacked sensor, CF express card slots, etc. Too bad the Sony a7iv has so many inherent overheating problems. Panasonic's aggressive's overheating cooling fan solution with the S5ii suggests that they will get a huge slice of Sony's potential market share; more power to them. Sony does have tech engineering to deal with heat sinks and cooling fans too, but they continue to disregard the needs of serious filmmakers as evidenced by the recent ZV-E1, two thousand dollar plus camera, USA $$. However, the Sony FX30-apsc-does indicate that Sony knows better. We'll soon see if their new highend apsc camera indicates any more hope in the direction of overheating issues being solved by Sony with their lower priced cameras. They should and could offer A+ products with all of their cameras. Panasonic marches, forwards and onwards while Sony does the Ostrich move-bury its head in the sand. 😎😎

@@seandewispelaere So far so good. My last Canon body was the 5D mkiii and it's amazing how far the technology has come in a few years. I also have Panasonics m4/3 which I've used for video, the GH1, GH2 G7, the G85 and I've always loved the Panasonic interface. So far it seems like a very capable camera. I don't have any doubts about its video capabilities but I was a bit hesitant due to the lack of aftermarket lenses. I'm currently trying to decide between the Sigma 24-70 and the 28-70 for my first lens. I bought them both and I'll be sending one back. The 28-70 is almost half the weight of the 24-70, but I'm going to try to do some real estate work as well and I'm afraid I'm going to miss that 4mm on the wide end for real estate. I'm looking at the rumors sites and apparently Sigma will come out with a 70-200 2.8 soon, which is the second lens most wedding photographers get.

i think most people don't even manage to push their camera to the limit. The Sony camera has been on the market since December 2021. Of course, Lumix has released a great new camera. With features that the Sony does not have, and? It's not something that's really super important. Why 6K? So that the computer burns even more 😂 The available lenses make up 50% of the camera. As soon as Lumix, Canon or Nikon have a similar repertoire, things really get interesting.

The A74 overheating issue is real. Call BH photo and ask them how long until it will overheat and they will see 40-45 min. Such a bummer!!

I'm not seeing that on my end. As long as it is in high temp mode, I haven't had an overheat issue after shooting well past 45-min in 4k 24p.

I went with S5ii For me the issues you have with it are minor to me- plus the $500 difference in price is a big one. But everything I get with S5ii is insane for the price. Lens selection theirs plenty of options for the S5ii … great comparison on the video..

All good points here, Kent. Although I've never had an overheating issue with the a7iv, I have seen some reviews that others have. Regardless, the s5II is an incredibly strong offering.

I own both but definitely feel the AF on the Sony is much better. My s5II finds faces in places they shouldn’t be with face detect. S5II is more on the level of Fuji but I don’t think it’s as good as the Sony or canon in my opinion
