Lunchbox was a popular weekday TV programme in the late 1950s. Broadcast around noon, it was produced by ATV Midlands in Birmingham and presented by Noele Gordon, Jerry Allen and his trio providing the music. The show ran from 1957 to 1963.

Jerry was my mentor and friend for many years and it was so good to be able to see him in action. An inspiration then and in his Lowrey years and beyond, I still say "what would Jerry think" when I play a few nice chords. Always there and still inspiring. Thanks Peter, for this wonderful treat.

Hearing Jerry Allen on Lunch Box was my inspiration towards playing the Hammond. It started my musical career with the Hammond Organ Company and a long friendship with Jerry - the nicest guy in the business.

This brings back so many happy memories of a simple childhood. I used to love to watch this with my mum who especially loved it when Evadne Price the astrologer delivered the daily horoscope. she would never miss it, and believed in everything she said. lol I think her last line every day was 'Think lucky and you'll be lucky'....happy days.

This is very nostalgic for me. At that time we didn't have a TV at home and I remember watching it at my grandma's house in the early 1960s. The days when television started around midday, broadcast for a couple of hours, then closed down until about 4.30pm.

Wow, I only remember Noelle Gordon from Crossroads when I watched as a kid in the 70's. This looks great, life looked so much nicer in those days. A very enjoyable show.

Used to have to watch this with my nan every day it was on about 1957-58 until I started school. I remember being so bored having to watch it but once I started school I wished I was back home watching it with my nan, a buttered roll and a cup of tea.

Thank you peter I just remember seeing lunchbox in 1963 1964 when my family moved from south Wales to birmingham I believe the programme finally ended in spring 1964 then noelle gordon began in crossroads in Nov 64 from the same studios a former cinema now where brmb radio is thanks for posting brings back memories

Pye records brought out an album in 1961 to cash in on the show's success, the album was part of their "Golden Guinea" catalogue, numbered GGL 0210.

Used to watch this before I started going to school. Like someone has already said it was like a radio show done on TV. Jerry Allen and his trio were master musisians who were also prepared to entertain as well as play. Great to see this blast from the past.

In the mid 60s Lionel had a drum shop Ringway Music in the Bull Ring Birmingham, in which I used to browse impecuniously and try to get to play the kits, but I only ever got to buy a pair of sticks off him.

ATV/ABC used the former Astoria cinema, originally called Theatre Royal in Aston, Birmingham. It closed as a cinema in 1955 presumably when it became a TV studio.

Peter Preston Absolutely! I must have been about 4 years old. Can clearly recall Jerry on the organ. Along with the intro to Fireball XL5, it’s my earliest TV memory. Nice to think I was actually exposed to such good musicians at a very early age. Thanks again.

Hi 👋 - just come across this ! I live in South Wales, but 1956 to 1958 I was doing my ‘ national service, & happened to be stationed in Donington Shropshire, for 6 months , & happening to be a drummer! , I would rush into Naffi at dinner times to see the ‘ lunch box show ! = Fabulous to see the * Jerry Allen & trio , I as very lucky 👍, I have the complete collection’s of them , I’m now 84 years gone, cheers for these memories 😜🌈.

Tony Cant Sorry Tony - I doubt it! Video recording was in its infancy in those days and this particular show was shot on film I believe as a 'one off.' The first video recording onto magnetic tape was made late November 1956 in the States using an Ampex VR1000. The machine had only been unveiled earlier that year (March). I'm pleased you enjoyed the flash back in time though. Unfortunately, I can well remember the 1950s - and the programme going out on Channel 8 in the Midlands!

I think this is the only available episode of Lunch Box that is available online, most sources say all episodes are missing.

I watched Lunchbox regularly - I was in my teens when the all episodes were aired. Being a lifelong Hammond organ aficionado I was drawn to Jerry Allen's wonderful playing. The organ is, I believe, a Model E produced in the early 1940's, and has the button-style presets as opposed to the reverse black and white keys on later models. I think it also had two swell pedals, or at least the concert version did. Must have weighed a ton and. Thanks for uploading. Watching was a delightful memory lane trip. I believe Alan Graham, the vibes player is still going strong :).

It was shown in the London area as well. It was a pretty old fashioned TV show even at that time. I remember Roy Edwards was one of the regular featured singers. It actually featured Cliff Richard on one occasion.

I arrived here after I suddenly remembered a phrase from my childhood - "a round of applause for the lunchbox clock" - (the only thing I could remember about the programme, other than it was presented by Noele Gordon and her inability to pronounce either Crich or Ilkeston correctly) and went searching for it. I'm sure they used to do live OBs from around the Midlands with audiences encouraged to applaud the clock when it came around to, I think, 1 pm. Even as a 4-year-old, this struck me as an incredibly bizarre thing for an adult audience to do. Does anyone else remember that?

They certainly had a lot of fun. The show's format is bizarre - a bit like a radio request show transferred to TV . Around 30.00 it really livens up once the lists of birthday / anniversary requests are done with. Noele Gordon enjoyed herself you can clearly see which is a nice thought as it seems ATV treated her in a pretty shabby fashion later on. Interesting to watch as this show was over before I was born and so an insight for me. Thank you.

If only I had known of the existence of this episode when I produced two You-Tube videos based on the life of dear Jerry Allen. They can still be seen in ORGAN CELEBRITIES VOL 30 AND VOL 30b. I had the great pleasure of meeting and working with Jerry at some of the very early Pontins Organ Festivals at Morecambe, and also with him and his lovely wife Lovis at Organ Festivals in Torremolinos. at the Hotel Pontinental. One of the nicest guys you could be in the company of, and someone who had a fund of hilarious show business stories. I urged him to write a book about them but sadly this was never to be. If you have any of his recordings, treasure them for they are examples of Hammond and Lowrey organ playing at its best. Incidentally, the couple of close ups of Jerry at the Hammond in the final number indicate that the organ model must have been a very early one because it has the unusual 'typewriter' tone selectors which were replaced in later years with the black & white matching key selectors. If for nothing else this video is worth it to see and hear that Trio 'in action' again. Thanks to Peter for the chance to view it.

I too had the privilege of meeting Jerry on one-or-two occasions when he was demonstrating Lowrey organs and as you say, you couldn’t wish to meet a nicer person. I can recall watching Lunchbox many years ago too - but oh, how television has changed! It had always been my intention to visit Jerry’s shop in Watford when I was in the area but somehow sadly I never got around to it ..... and what a pity he never got around to writing a book!

Streuth!, I was six years old the last time i saw this, very happy days of childhood, this is where i first heard the distinctive Hammond sound, always loved it, wonder how this was captured?, no apparent 405 line structure, must've been filmed, don't think vtr's were common way back then, many thanks for posting this memory for posterity.

You guessed correctly, Greg! The programme was filmed as a one-off for posterity! VTRs were very thin on the ground in those halcyon days. The prototype of the world's first professional videotape recorder - the Ampex VR1000 - was unveiled at the NAB convention in Las Vegas in 1956. It was an enormous size, employed valves (tubes) and generated enough heat to cook your breakfast with! It utilized a 2-inch wide tape on a 12-inch reel, weighing around 15 pounds and recorded in the American standard, of course. The first (Ampex) to arrive in the UK (the VR1000C variant for 405 line operation) were bought by Rediffusion, Granada and the BBC and to the best of my knowledge the earliest UK version dates from 1959. The Ampex 2000B, introduced in 1968 and capable of recording in PAL (UK) colour, was the first transistorized machine and perhaps the most widely-used Ampex VTR; an industry standard, in fact - although others did follow. Models compatible with the PAL (UK) system were also developed by RCA but 2-inch machines were gradually superseded by those using a 1-inch wide tape in the 70s. I remember watching this programme when it was first broadcast (I'm afraid!). Those were in the days when many were actually transmitted live - often with some hilarious bloopers. I'm hoping you may have a broadcast date you must have been a tiny tot when you saw it's first broadcast. I shared your link with my brother and we both said it was sad that this wasn't available when my mum was still alive. She never saw her sister performing overseas. I'm also looking for a 1972 edition of Basil Brush on which Eula appeared. Perhaps you can tell me how to get a copy of the video you have and where I might go searching for Basil. Thanks again for bringing a tear to my eye and a smile to my lips.

I have a friend in Melbourne who is doing as you are restoring TV & Radio recordings but all Australian material and most never recorded for public distribution but just over the airways. Yes the Basil Brush show you have listed is the one I'm looking for. I am going to contact the BBC archives to see if they have it. I believe it was her last performance. I met up with her in London in 1974 and she wasn't working on TV or radio at that time. If we could make contact that would be great.

Interesting to see on the end credits for ATV at Alpha Studios, this shows the logo with correct proportions, the ATV logo seen immediately after this is with incorrect proportions.

ATV's ident has always consisted of a shadowed eye which, it is widely believed, was originally inspired by the ident used by CBS. This shadowed eye with the letters ATV inside came to represent the company’s image. The first ident featured a single eye shape, moving to reveal the shadowed eye and animating so that each of the letters ATV animate in succession accompanied by one of the three musical notes on the ident score. The caption below read Associated TeleVision Ltd - the only time the station's full name was displayed in one of its idents. The shadowed eye however was out of proportion and this was attributed to the rush to redraw the ident following the name change from ABC. Best wishes - Pete

+Mark Allison - Thank-you for taking a look at my KZfaq channel, Mark. This episode of Lunchbox dates from 1959; it was produced by ATV as a special telerecording using conventional ArriFlex (film) cameras and later edited into what you see here. It was made at a time when videotape recording was very much in its infancy and the Ampex Corporation in the US had only announced the availability of the Ampex VR1000 quadruplex videotape recorder - the first commercially-available machine - a short time earlier. Having said that, I believe Mace Archives may have some snippets from later programmes and they might be worth getting in contact with if you want more! Best wishes - Pete

I can remember that well into the 80s, Tyne Tees would give out full names and addresses when reading out kiddies birthday cards on a lunchtime. But, you're right - there's no way this would happen now.

@@garrysimpson1395 I don't think this programme was fully networked although I believe some other regions did show it on an occasional or trial basis. Of course when it first began there wasn't that much of a network to show it on anyway as ITV had yet to reach much of the country.

Regret it's taken a little while to get back to you due to health problems, Garry. As far as I can remember, the programme was transmitted in the Midlands principally but I also seem to recall that it was taken by a few other regions - sorry I can't be more precise. @@trevordance5181 As a [Now] 56 year old I seem to remember that [Before 1972] when I.T.V. could broadcast from 9.30 A.M. untill Midnight 30.] If a company had a Lunch-time programme like this. The local I.T.V. Station had to close at 11.15 P.M. That is me being old! Many thanks for your reply.

I saw this TV lunchtime show a few occasions when skipping school. It was corny and old fashioned even then. The whole mood of the programme felt you were in an old folks home. The songs were dreary, dated and accompanied by that awful electrical organ, which I hated with a vengeance! The whole thing looked as if was being done on the cheap. Noelle Gordon attempts at humour were at best woeful. I was surprised this lunchtime show ran for so long as it was dull and seem to be aimed at the elderly. It brings back memories, but not happy ones.

Noelle Gordon is such a diva working within her own bubble. Talentless who only got any high profile work due to her influential boyfriend, Val Parnell.
