Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, behind breast and prostate, and the most common cause of cancer death. The vast majority of cases are related to cigarette smoking. They can be divided in to two broad types: non-small cell and small cell lung cancer.
They most often present with a prolonged cough, or haemoptysis (coughing up blood).
They are diagnosed with imaging that will include a chest x-ray, CT scan, and Tissue diagnosis is usually with bronchoscopy and biopsy.
Treatment includes surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy and choice varies with the histological type and stage of the tumour.

Just wanted to say this has been very helpful. I'm not a medical student but I am PhD student in molecular biology and my current project is focused on lung adenocarcinoma and this was a helpful primer for sure.

Hi Marwan, thanks for the comment! In the video I was describing signs (things that a doctor might see when examining or performing investigations on patients) that might be seen in people who have a lung cancer. Effusion, collapse and consolidation are signs that might be found when examining a patient, and on chest x-ray. An effusion is an abnormal collection of fluid somewhere in the body - in this case we are talking about a pleural effusion. A pleural effusion is a collection of fluid in between the two layers of tissue that line the lung. There are lots of possible causes for an effusion, one of which is a cancer. Collapse is where the parts of the lung that normally contain air are not able to inflate. It can be caused by blockage of the airways or from pressure outside, pushing on the airways. Tumours can also cause this. Collapse is often also called ‘atelectasis’. Consolidation means that the airways of the lungs are filled with a material more dense than air. It is a term used to describe this finding on an x-ray. This material can pus, fluid, blood or cells. In the case of lung cancer, consolidation may be seen if there are cancerous cells in the airways, or if there is infection around the tumour causing a build-up of pus. Whilst these are found in cases of lung cancers, it’s important to understand that there are many, many other causes of effusions, collapse and consolidation. If you are a medical student and aren’t familiar with these terms yet, it would be worth having a look at what the characteristic findings are associated with each of these when you are examining a patient, and also how they might appear on a chest x-ray. Hope this helps your understanding!
